Class choice can be a funny thing sometimes...

Hey all. Just found myself musing about this and thought it might make for an semi-interesting discussion to throw onto the general forums lol.

But you ever have a game (here or otherwise) that you eventually settled on "main'ing" a class that seemed different than your usual?

In most games i play (including many MMO's i dabble in) i am a paladin type. Usually heavy armor. Always melee. Usually a tank in groups. Like to have self healing options. You know the type. Barring those i go for a warrior type.

I also love dragons... i mean Draco is part of my handle pretty much everywhere.

So for here, it seems that either templar or dragon knight would be MADE for me.

At this point i've played all 4 classes to 15'ish (not all THAT high, i understand, but enough that i can get a kinda feel for em). And you know my favorite?

Dual wield Magicka nightblade.

And my second favorite?

2h Stam sorc.

Heh... go figure.

Right now i'm main'ing my nightblade and loving the hell out of it. Maybe its because i always loved stealing in elder scrolls games. The thieves guild was always one of the first i became a master of in every elder scrolls since morrowind. These days i make the majority of my lowbie gold by stealing everything not nailed down and selling anything that goes for more than 20 gold (unless its something nice i can launder and put up in my trade guild's AH).

But i enjoy invisibility, nightblade ultimates, looking forward to sap essence, etc.

As a sorc i actually like playing as a 2h build with pets. Probably sucks endgame but it keeps me amused as i quest

My dragon knight feels "tank'ier" and my templar can basically self heal like a boss with his little spear stabby ability but neither amuses me more than my NB or sorc... and i can't even completely put a finger on why lol.

Ah well... just roll with it, eh?

So anyway, what about you guys? Ever play a game fully expecting to love a specific class and end up with the exact opposite? Any interesting stories along the way?

ty for any replies

When I first started playing mmo's (EQ '99) I was always a warrior tank type. As the years went by I went on to casters, then added healers to the resume, and now have started dabbling in thieves-assassin types. I've never really cared for "paladin" type classes with the self heals and all (I'm an altoholic rp'er and just feel my toons should all have some weaknesses) but I do find myself enjoying the hell out of my Heavy Armor wearing Templar. Using a resto staff for healing duties and rocking 2h mauls for soloing.

    Oh yes!

For about 10 or 11 years, my main character has been an archer, in both MMOs and single player games. I would always favor the physical-damage, ranged-focused class. After I started following this game's development, I fired up Skyrim again and made a magic-oriented character (and a little later, did the same for Oblivion).

Now I main a Magicka Sorcerer in ESO, and that's the first time my main in a MMO isn't an archer. And I'm very proud of her
Just so that everyone knows, my Altmer still can't have black hair. About a dozen of Altmer NPCs in the game have black hair. Just saying.

    Meet my characters:
    Command: Do the thing.

Zadarri, Khajiit Fist of Thalmor: The thing was done, as commanded.
Durza gra-Maghul, Orc blacksmith: The thing was done perfectly, in the most efficient way.
Tegwen, Bosmer troublemaker: You can't prove I didn't do the thing.
Sings-Many-Songs, Argonian fisher: Sure, I'll do the thing... Eventually. Maybe.
Aerindel, Altmer stormcaller: After extensive research, I've come to the conclusion that doing the thing would be a waste of resources.
Liliel, Dunmer pyromancer: Aerindel said I shouldn't do the thing. Something about "resources".
Gyda Snowcaller, Nord cryomancer: I will find a way to do it that won't waste resources and make Aerindel proud of me.
Beatrice Leoriane, Breton vampire: I persuaded someone else into doing the thing. You are welcome, dear.
Sahima, Redguard performer: Doing the thing sounds awfully unpleasant and really not my problem.
Ellaria Valerius, Imperial priestess: I'll pray to the Eight for the thing to be done, if it is Their will.

Well being a nord this is something I usually pick on first build. Back in Skyrim I got tired of being the classic tanky nord so I switched to more spellsword - running with dagger/s and spells.

My main in ESO is a nord stam NM. I didn't know / care about min/maxing when I started and after 300 hours + on this character I started to regret my choice of race. However now that I have 320 CP the build feels ok. Will probably never be vMA fighter but the stamina NB's are not great for this anyway. When I complete all research I'm gonna respec again and probably go for more tank on this one.

I also have 5 alts I'm doing writs and feeding horses with. They are all good templates regarding class and race. The 2 last placeholders and mules will probably turn into a dunmer hybrid DK and last one might turn into argonian something.

I will start to focus on my magica based builds soon but I will not go through all the trouble to make any of them v16. Getting them to veteran and just wait for the removal of veteran ranks in october I guess...

2h and HA all day. I don't care about any of the reasons not to do it. I will find ways to make it work. I also don't really look at the classes and I've given them all new names in my head.
    Stam Sorc - Warrior - 2H HA
    MagBlade - Dark Paladin/Templar - S+B Resto staff HA
MagKnight - Fire Mage - Sticks and skirts
    Magplar - Paladin/Bank - S+B Bow HA
Stam Sorc - Rogue - DW Bow MA
Mag Sorc - Nothing yet - Sticks and skirts

Really enjoying the MagBlade and the Mag Sorc. Now if I could just get them maxed out. VR removal can't happen soon enough for me.

I tend to gravitate towards hybrid/jack of all trades classes, particularly druidic / shaman classes in most games I play where it's an option.

Here, obviously, that wasnt an option. I started out as a templar, back at launch, but quickly gave up on the templar and switched to nightblade which has been my main since. I still love the templar, but it just doesnt feel right to me, especially as a melee / stamina build.

One can't even begin to get a true flavor for a class or build on a character at lvl 15.

At that, the paladin type build in heavy armor can work for PvP since sustain a and survivability are key. However, in PvE heavy armor on a dps will always equal weak dps. Heavy provides some good Passives for tanking but nothing to increase damage done as medium does for stam/weapon builds and light does for mag/spell builds.

Though, you can do what you want for solo stuff. Group conetent, and decently skilled group will, at the very least, point out the albatross.

Ive started with a magicka sorc back in April 2014 and enjoyed playing the class upto the Orsinium DLC.

In the current meta magicka sorcs are not that useful in pvp groups so I mainly play my magicka NB now.

I really enjoy two playstyles - sneaky and backstabby, or ranged caster. Unsurprisingly, my main characters are a stamina NB and a magica Sorc.

I also have a couple alts, because I like to testbed things... and I was surprised how much fun I had with my "paladin-type" stamina templar build. The heavy armor means the combat is of the "slow and steady" type, with lots of heavy attacks to regain stamina... and the templar skills more an afterthought except for the emergency heals... but it works pretty well together, surprisingly so.
Another that was more fun to play then expected was my "thunder priest" stamina sorc...

And if they bring additional character slots as the rumor goes, there are a few more combinations I might give a try... (what can I say, I am an incorridable altaholic...)

I main tanked in WoW for so long that most MMOs I play I don't tank anymore at all. Pure DPS. Except SWTOR, because my Juggernaut reminded me of my paladin in WoW.

I also use to lead a raid guild and did that for a long time. Don't do that anymore either. I see a trend here ;)

I like playing a warrior only Class. Dualswords heavy armor. That's what I like in fantasy games.

Would it be crazy to fantasize a warrior class only in Eso?

I always had a thing for thieves and sneaky archers when available. At least, in table RPGs (ADD, World of Darkness, Kult...) and solo video game RPGs (Baldur's Gate, Arcanum, TES, Dragon Age, KoA: Reckoning... does my sniper specialization in the Mass Effect series counts ? :p)

But on MMOs, it has always been healer, for ten years now : I was a priest on WoW, a priest of Mithra on Age of Conan, a rune priest on Warhammer, and an Imperial Agent/Operative on SWotOR.

Someone once told me it was because, as a woman, I have an instinctive motherly nature and want to protect my friends... BS ! :D I just like to feel indispensable (might be a feminine trait too, figures :D)

So on ESO, I wanted to change a bit and go back to a thief kind of gameplay. I went with a templar in medium and DW. But I missed healing... so I tried an hybrid spec which - I thought - would allow me to heal in melee. Of course, hybrid setups doesn't work in ESO (especially for templars, at the release ;)), so I had to make a choice... I went full healer ^_^

I've always been a paladin type just like you in all other games and before playing this game I planned to run heavy armor and be a dragonknight and also really wanted to do a wood elf archer modeled after Legolas from LOTR. Turns out now that my favorite toon is a magicka sorc. Being a caster had never appealed to me but for this game it's the one that's felt the best for me and second being a magplar because of just how simple it is to play. Very interesting indeed

I started off with mag DK as main class.... Then it got nerfed into the ground...

So I thought, hey lets make him a stam DK right? Then stam took an arrow in the knee.

Then I thought, hey lets make my main a magplar yeah? Then I truly realised that they were never going to fix toppling charge...

So I resorted to making a stam blade... It was fun during IC but stam blade (and stam) in general got blown to bits in TG.

So I thought lets make my main a mag sorc. OP as hell. Loving it and is my current main.

Got bored after a bit, and now considering turning my stam blade to a VD Proxy bomber man mag blade.

So yeah. That's the short version. I kinda main whatever the FOT(DLC) is at the moment since ZOS seems unable to ever balance anything properly.
