Yep, continuous 1k ping and solid 10 FPS in Auridon. (PC NA)

It's not just Cyrodiil anymore. Sure, Auridon has quite a few people in zone at the moment to do the cake quest, but this is disgusting. ZOS, you are truly amateurs. Just sell your IP to a company who can handle development and maintenance already. Kudos for "trying" but you have failed.

Honestly I don't know what you're expecting. I've had the same kind of lag and performance drops during similar events in other MMOs. Nothing to see here.

    Heh.

Nothing wrong with my FPS in Auridon. I never dropped below 40 fps.

However, while standing there on the waterfront, I was averaging 4435 ms latency and got booted to a crash report screen twice. Fun times!

Everyone but the ~30 people in Auridon eating cake. Seriously, I doubt there were more people than that. I've seen many times that in one place in other MMOs (even WoW 8 to 10 years ago) with a lot less hiccup than this.

I've seen hundreds in a single zone in EverQuest for events, and never had packet loss and lag anywhere near like I've seen in this game on a near constant basis.

I imagine this would be the case, so I went to Veteran Daggerfall instead of going to Auridon to get my cake.
Just so that everyone knows, my Altmer still can't have black hair. About a dozen of Altmer NPCs in the game have black hair. Just saying.

    Meet my characters:
    Command: Do the thing.

Zadarri, Khajiit Fist of Thalmor: The thing was done, as commanded.
Durza gra-Maghul, Orc blacksmith: The thing was done perfectly, in the most efficient way.
Tegwen, Bosmer troublemaker: You can't prove I didn't do the thing.
Sings-Many-Songs, Argonian fisher: Sure, I'll do the thing... Eventually. Maybe.
Aerindel, Altmer stormcaller: After extensive research, I've come to the conclusion that doing the thing would be a waste of resources.
Liliel, Dunmer pyromancer: Aerindel said I shouldn't do the thing. Something about "resources".
Gyda Snowcaller, Nord cryomancer: I will find a way to do it that won't waste resources and make Aerindel proud of me.
Beatrice Leoriane, Breton vampire: I persuaded someone else into doing the thing. You are welcome, dear.
Sahima, Redguard performer: Doing the thing sounds awfully unpleasant and really not my problem.
Ellaria Valerius, Imperial priestess: I'll pray to the Eight for the thing to be done, if it is Their will.

There were more than 156 people in Vulkhel Guard while I was there. I do not know exactly how many more than that because the client crashed and interrupted my count.

OP obviously isn't experienced in MMOs. What do you expect in an event like this? Invest boatloads of money in server upgrades to handle an event that lasts for a few days? Then let it be overkill and wasted money the other 358 days of the year?

I dont think you guys understand layering. There are probably 40-50 instances of that area with the same amount of people in them.

I wouldn't comment about the ping but about FPS, you should consider upgrading your toaster.

Come on lol. I was in DC for this, and there were roughly I dunno, a couple hundred people there. It was rough. My ONLY thought was, so this is what the PvP people are seeing EVERY DAY, dam that super sucks, I'd be mad too lol. I was in no way surprised that it was a slideshow lol. Nobody gathers like that on the regular in PvE, so we don't see it so bad. But you know it gets a little rough in the more populated cities without it being that crowded.

I don't think it is a server capacity issue, unless they are running the megaserver very very lean. Outside of the starting zones, the game plays normally. This is because the server population is not over the top.

I think this is just a server performance issue. Two of them, actually. First, the Cyrodiil-style lag is not really limited to Cyrodil. The megaserver works to separate players outside of Cyrodiil to reduce this lag, but if everyone in the zone runs to the same place, the zone is going to lag. Had they resolved the lag problem, this probably would not have been an issue.

Second, the way the megaserver does this is by separating the players in the same zone by putting them in different "copies" of the zone. Each copy of the zone might have 200 players in it, so if there are 20,000 players in Auridon, there are 100 "copies" of Auridon. We have no idea how many players were in Auridon, but it was a whole lot. I think the server melted trying to make all those copies of the starting zones. This would be evident in loading screens, which is when a player entering a zone is placed into one of the copies, and new copies are probably made as needed. Performance problems there can account for long load screens.

Hopefully, they were monitoring this and taking data so they have a better idea of how to fix this. The system should be designed to be able to handle this better than it did.

    NA PC

Lag carried over to many other zones outside the starting areas.

I was constant 999+ in the Rift and there was probably all of 15 players in whole zone.

What server. That was not the case in NA for me. Outside of Auridon and Davon's Watch I was getting 90-110 latency, which is spot on average for me. That was in Orsinium (EP & AD) and Khenarthi's Roost (AD). I did not count in the Roost, but Orsinium was pretty busy outside of the bank.

OP isn't the only one not experienced with mmos. How about the designers? money in a boatload of servers? Nah how about several locations to go to, for those not veterans yet?

Anyone who has played mmos for awhile know that events like this lag the crap out of servers. Yet they still design events that funnel everyone into 1 or 2 areas.

This is a pretty small event considering I've played other MMOs with several hundred people in a home city and the game never lagged.
