Lightning or fire staff for a sorc??

I know sorcs focus on lightning damage, but everything that boosts lightning also boosts fire and fire is good in pvp vs vamps.

so my opinion is a fire staff, but i need to be sure if im going to craft a yellow one

I've used both a fire and a lightning. The fire staff is great for knocking people off keep walls and yeah whilst it can be useful against vamps I've found that fewer people are embracing the dark side lately. I'm currently using a lightning staff as its great for fighting dragonknights, they can't reflect the heavy attack back.

Fire and Ice Staves are easier to weave with than with Lightning

And since Fire does more damage...

Altho Ice is pretty good too for the snares

Just my personal opinion but I prefer fire staves. Not for any technical reasons. I just find them easier to weave with. The channeling animation with lightning staves throws me off.

Lightning staves do damage while you're charging for the heavy attack, as opposed to having to wait and endure a vulnerability while charging a heavy fire staff attack. However (probably because of that) fire staves do more damage overall. Like everything, it boils down to your playstyle. Do you have the shields and health to keep yourself alive while you take the time to use a fire staff, or do you need more damage per second with a lightning? When it comes to frost staves I just ignore them completely.

Personally I've played with a Lightning Staff the most, while going for a Flame Staff whenever I wanted to do more damage and use the knockback effect you get with Destructive Clench.

Its quite hard to weave with lightning staff. I got a Maelstrom one recently, and was really disappointed. Now this staff is used by my healer to apply ele drain.

Meduim weaves are much easier with a fire staff. Yeah lightening goes through reflect and dodge but so does resto staff heavy which I also carry. Lightening staff procs disintegration but so do 80% of the skills on my bars. So I go with fire staff cos the medium weaves are op.

Yeah lightening staff procs disintegrate, I mentioned it in my post. The thing is, so does streak, boundless storm, mages wrath, liquid lightening, crushing shock, atronach, overload, and probably more I haven't thought of. My fave things to proc disintegrate are boundless storm and streak

In PvE, fire all the way.

In PvP I swap out and can't decide which I like better. Fire does more damage and you can weave fairly easily with it, but is dodgeable. Lightning follows players around corners, can't be reflected and is really hard for them to avoid, but is hard to weave with and aiming is weird -- it really likes to find people's dwemers and sorc pets for some reason instead of the player standing in front of them. When it's so laggy you can't see what's actually going on, lightning staff is bound to be hitting *somebody.*

Disappointed with the lack of love for ice staves. Ice staves have a cheap spammable root that can only be dodged, you can not be cc immune to it. On low stam builds you can burn all there stamina in one root plus one hard cc. If you have a hard cc on your bar already then you don't really need a fire staff unless for the extra dps.
In PvE I still use fire staves for that reason but in PvP you get tons of cheap spammable control with ice staves. With the destructive clench morph the root lasts for 6-8 seconds not certain right now but it's pretty significant.

I used to use fire but the lighting has really become my favorite over the last few months. I find the lightening heavy attack fits my play style better. I back bar the fire staff for the destro ulti and WOE.

Could be class dependent to an extent (have not done the maths), maybe High Elf then Lightning or Dark Elf Inferno.. might have a practice on the dummy later and see..

A high elf sorc hits 9% harder on a lightning staff, has an easier time with lightning HA sustain, and doesn't have to worry about lacking resource return on a fire staff's slower medium weaves.

Sorcs are primarily AoE anyway (frags is dead) and most DPS only use LA and HA because medium weaving is also dead. Lightning LA also hit 9% stronger and swapping bars allows you to keep the AoE bonus from the Destro passive at all times. Double Lightning is better IMO.

An argument can be made for fire staff on NB, Templar, and Warden because their bonuses aren't as restrictive - fire/lightning are equally effective for them. Obviously, a DK using a lightning staff is heresy.
