Logging off

Why does it say that you have to wait 10 seconds or else you'll be in their system?
What does that mean?

It means if you log off before the 10 seconds, you'll still be logged in to the server (people can see you) for those remaining 10 seconds, potentially longer if you get in combat I think. In other words you could still die if you're in a dangerous situation.

Ahh alright. Had me confused about that. Thank you!

Yeah, it's just there to keep you from logging out to avoid an attack. It's also why you won't see the timer in some safe zones, like in towns.

I feel that if you get killed because you died after crashing.. it should give you a free res right where you are. Like if the client isn't responding when you get killed. But then again people might figure out how to force free res.

Also, honestly, the costs of rezing is pretty low. There's rare exceptions, and if you're just going through the game for the first time, it could be a problem. But, normally? It's annoying, but not really onerous.

And, I say this as someone who dragged their bank to less than 1k gold today and can't afford to repair gear, because I've been finishing up the glass motif.

I play windowed mode, if I just want to get off completely and ignore the normal logout or exit, I just push the X at the top right :P

Yeah, if an enemy finds you within those 10 seconds, they can abort your logout (even when you've closed the window), and then slowly beat you to death over the next ten minutes.

Agreed. I've played other MMO's where you lose a portion of your current level's XP as well as rez sickness and gear damage.

Here in ESO? Death is inconsequential; something that is sadly prevalent in many games now.

Usually, those are towns with some kind of combat quest in town. Though, this isn't universal. And a few towns, like Riften, and Daggerfall actually have combat quests in the city limits, but also have instant logouts. I honestly don't remember if Velyn Harbor has one, or if it changes depending on the stage of the quest.

Still, generally speaking, it's there to keep you from logging out on the spot to avoid an enemy.

    Honestly? I'll take it.

I mean, a lot of it comes down to overall game design. I love Dark Souls' lose all your carried XP/currency on death, but if you can work your way back to where you were, you can reclaim it. But, that's also in a very tight action game, and I really don't think that would work as well for an MMO.

Lagging out, getting mauled to death by a bear that didn't appear on your screen, and then loosing a CP over it would be pretty infuriating.

It would also make stuff like the enemies that one shot you in trials far more infuriating... and probably decimate a chunk of the PvE endgame community. They're willing to put in the time, but if learning a trial could cost 10-20 CP? That makes it a lot less appealing. Also, because of how endgame content can go sideways because of one player messing up... can you imagine the toxicity and exclusionary behavior you'd see, if a bad vet dungeon run could cost you several days worth of experience because one of your team members didn't know the patterns and was leading to full party wipes?

Severe death penalties need to be at the feet of the player who died. If you've got endgame content like ESO's, where you're dependent on other players to carry their weight, it's a recipe for very angry people pointing fingers at one another, and a community that would eat it's own tail.

Except for the bank in Craglorn. 10 seconds there.

Basically what others have said but one extreme example.
A real life friend of mine plays with me on xbox one. When he's done he just turns off his Xbox one, his character stays on tho. Yesterday, he showed grouped for 45 mins to 1 hour

I was in error, I think I must've been too far from Narsis' town centre; because it did insta-log me out when I was nearer there...

I think you're right as well, though I don't know about Dhalmora in Bal Foyen, I do know that Bleakrock Village on an Isle of the same name does not insta-log someone out, probably because of a virtually imminent combat situation.
