To steal 1M

So what is the best location to find green blue and purple items? Pickpocket? Chests? Silver lock boxes?

What place do you do it and where did you farm your 1m Stealing achiv?

I'm about halfway through this achievement right now (something like 450k earned so far). I've snooped around in almost all the major cities of the different zones so far, and these are my observations (in no particular order):
    • There's an upper limit of 20-30k gold that you can earn per day if you fence only green and blue items, and this is only when you hit your fence limit.
    • Chances of getting green and blue loot are highest if you look around in safeboxes, barrels, sacks, nightstands, dressers, crates, and other such things you can find in cities.
    • Pickpocketing usually isn't that good a means if you want to finish this achievement quickly; approximately 70% of items you get this way will be white, and the rest will be mostly green. Not worthwhile in terms of time spent and money earned.
    • Some cities are better than others if you want to hunt around for the better quality items. I personally prefer Shornhelm and Windhelm, as they have a higher number of locked houses (=a higher number of safeboxes), and the Outlaws Refuge entrance is conveniently located if you want to make a quick getaway.

While stealing, I usually follow a fixed route through the city, and now I pretty much know all the guard patrol schedules and how to avoid them. >:)

    Gear:

I've found that having gear dedicated specifically for thieving makes it much faster to sneak around. The best ones are those that:
    • Add stamina and stamina regen
    • Ignore the movement speed penalty (e.g. Night's Silence, Shadow Dancer)
    • Reduce stamina cost of sprinting. (e.g. Darkstride)
All medium armour of course with stamina enchantments (well-fitted is an excellent trait to have for thieving, as much as it is hated otherwise), and with skill points into the Wind Walker, Improved Sneak, and Athletics passives in the medium armour skill line (I also use the Windrunning passive from the Lover constellation).

Oh, and don't forget to use the new passives from the Thieves Guild skill line; Haggling especially will give you a slight advantage towards that achievement!

@dsalter While that may be true, your chances of getting a bounty are also significantly higher, and as a consequence you might lose all your precious stolen items. Hence I prefer the safer (and more profitable) way out :)

To me, the barrels/crates in harbor areas and inside large sailing ships are best for stealing valuables, I find there many green items. And these places are usually free from guards so it's very quick.

    I just finished it.
I''ve been postponing it for the TG DLC, since we knew we would have to steal stuff for the Thieves Guild.
I mostly farmed cassettes, in vet locations (low level cassettes usually have only one item and greens more often than blues).

And the limit is actually much higher : if you find only purpled, you could make 140*1500 : 210k gold per day.
But of course, this is not realist.
Gathering blue is, and I've had a few days at 35k per day (140 blues). Takes a lot of time farming though.
What? Lead? Me? No, no, no. No leading. Bad things happen when I lead. We get lost, people die, and the next thing you know I’m stranded somewhere without any pants.

    yea I cant do that...
Just to get 140 blues and greens at what ever comes first in a mix takes hours a day. Normally only getting you like 15-20k a day. Thats around 60 days EVERY DAY of hours of farming just thieving.

Full time job, Side start up business, time with partner and friends, relaxing and life. I already put a lot of time into this game to get 95% of the other PVE achivs done but even for me this one is hella bad design.

I cant farm such a thing for 2-3 hours a day EVERY day for 60 days. Will take forever for a achiv that always should of stopped at 300k or less not 1m.

    IMO

Wayrest Castle, east of the temple with the re-dedication shrines, is a decent place. Run in, steal everything, head to the Outlaw Refuge nearby, repeat (the castle resets when you zone in/out of the refuge). You can hit your daily limit in an hour or so, maybe slightly longer if you only want greens and above.

I use dedicated thieving gear. Night Mother's Embrace (5pc: I think there are only 5 armor pieces available) and Nightshade (3pc: necklace and 2 daggers) lets me stand right next to guards and steal things (I'm Bosmer as well).

As an aside, Emeric and his wife may be the most annoying couple ever.

Do you craft? Or train your riding? There are plenty of time sinks in this game. I would think is is only something you would go after if you enjoyed the thieving aspect of the game. So I will probably never get it. Oh well.

I consider them the tax for being able to loot so much nice stuff. I pulled a lot of motifs out of that castle pre-justice system, including a nice haul of purples.

Is steeling actually a thing? I mean is it more profitable than grinding (and collect all to sell it) or searching for bargains in the guild stores? Or do you guys just do it for the achievement?

Those are very different, ea of the learning/skills take a few clicks and done, yes it takes 60+ days but ea days was like a 5 second time gate ea day not a 3 hours grind for 60+ days straight.... very different, this argument is common and does not make sense.

I can make more in the same time from maxing out my daily in Fencing than I can grinding mobs. However, there is a cap on this that you don't have from grinding mobs, so over time mob grinding is better. I also tend to grab anything that has value, not just the Greens and Blues, so it does not take all that long to reach the limits. But, an easy 5K plus for 10 minutes work, it adds up quickly.

Grinds like snap though if you can handle doing the whole dungeon in 2 pulls give way more gold though and even useful items like crafting and materials etc.

*edit* and levels skills and morphs if you dont have them all maxed already, and cp, and levels for alts etc.

But not any of the dungeons my two L5's or L12 or L35 can go to. They are mules and exist for running Hirelings, well the L35 is being leveled, slowly. So, for them, and any new player, Legerdemain is the easy way to make Gold. I wish I had this when I started the game back in April 2014

When I was going to this achievement, I would steal everything (safeboxes, drawers etc) in Wayrest (for me its Cadwell's gold zone). There's a decent amount of safeboxes, and Wayrest castle contains a lot of containers. There are 2 guards and an npc knight on the second floor, but guards are easily avoidable and the guard can be dispatched with wrecking blow from sneak. Also relogging or visiting Thieves den resets all containers except safeboxes.
For stealing purposes I used 7/7 medium armor with passives, 5 pieces Night's Silence and 3 Nightshade (it only exists in low vr versions, but stats dont really matter for this). Also I always kept some invisibility potions just in case... These days, bounty removal tickets from thieve's troves might be useful if you accidentaly get caught.
You can also break in all houses and pickpoket their owners (and steal safeboxes of course!). If you get caught, just use the ticket.

I did say you need to enjoy the thieving aspect. If this was true, this achievement wouldn't be a grind. It would in fact be something that just happens with your playstyle. This is a very broad game that tries to give a wide variety of players something to do/work towards/achieve.

Also, do you have to get it in 60 days? Could you not log in, spend 10 mins stealing, fence the stolen goods and then forget about it for the rest of your game session? Because if the acievement is not time based you could let it build up slowly. I'm thinking that the people who are complaining about this are achievement junkies who must have all of the achievements. Even if they don't enjoy the activities to get them. Not enjoying something and forcing yourself to do it over and over and over again is what doesn't make sense to me.

What place do you do it and where did you farm your 1m Stealing achiv?

I remeber when I running in rift...around 13 boxes to stealing and if nobody farming here its also so easilly and fast to farm this :P when you picklocking last box its soon to respawn 1st...alos with this time respawn to 1st from last you can go fast to Ivarstead for 1 box in hause and back to rif and again run from start :) so much blues items you can get from boxes :P

I finished this one a long time ago.

I found the best place for pick pocketing is Daggerfall. Lots of easy people to steal from (good for the pick pocket achievement too)

Wayrest Castle has a lot of containers to steal from, just don't get caught cause you cannot get out of there.

For the last few hundred k, I ended spending most of my time in Sentinel. The town is mostly empty of other players, and there are a LOT of lock boxes. Just about every building has one.

Hallin's Stand in Bankorai is another place with a lot of lock boxes.

Both of these places were good some days and crowded others. It seemed like at one point everyone found out about it and started going there to farm lockboxes.

Contraband Violet is one of the coolest colors in the game (in my opinion) so it's worth the hard effort.

And the limit is actually much higher : if you find only purple, you could make 140*1500 : 210k gold per day.
But of course, this is not realist.

I'm curious how often people are finding purple stolen items? I'm only at around 150k but have only ever found one purple item while stealing which seems rather little.

Well, lets see. I have leveled 4 Alts to L20 in Legerdemain, my Mules are all in the L12 to L15 range, so I would say that I have stolen a fair bit of stuff, probably 500,000 overall. Of course not on one character for the Achievement. Anyway, I have found about 6 Purples all together. I even found one last night on an extended thieving run.

I will say that I had not found a Purple in about 2 months prior to last night. I found the other 5 early on in the Legerdemain system when it released, but like all things, drops get nerfed after the first week or two.
Enjoy the game, life is what you really want to be worried about.

Grinds like snap though if you can handle doing the whole dungeon in 2 pulls give way more gold though and even useful items like crafting and materials etc.

    Thats fair enough :)

    Two sadly overall.

Gathering blue is, and I've had a few days at 35k per day (140 blues). Takes a lot of time farming though.

    yea I cant do that...

    IMO

Do you craft? Or train your riding? There are plenty of time sinks in this game. I would think is is only something you would go after if you enjoyed the thieving aspect of the game. So I will probably never get it. Oh well.

Those are very different, ea of the learning/skills take a few clicks and done, yes it takes 60+ days but ea days was like a 5 second time gate ea day not a 3 hours grind for 60+ days straight.... very different, this argument is common and does not make sense.

I did say you need to enjoy the thieving aspect. If this was true, this achievement wouldn't be a grind. It would in fact be something that just happens with your playstyle. This is a very broad game that tries to give a wide variety of players something to do/work towards/achieve.

was going to ask this myself. I'm at 475,000 towards the 1m ach (have a wife who loves to steal!!) and have only found 3 total. Actually it's more like 700k because I have two char working towards this. And still only 3 purples ever. So I'm curious what others have found.

Two were found craglorn, one wrothgar. For what it's worth.

Quoted because this guy gets it.

It is one of the only pve achivs left for me. Enjoyment and game play is all based on perception. What is fun or not is not the question, what makes sense by maths is all that maters. Evaluate the time needed on the achiv divide by reward and reasoning. The achiv should be (Time done naturally in gameplay and quests) + (Fair grind for those junkies = (Achiv). Even just doubling the standed 100k you have stolen by end of the quest would of made better sense. 300k is best mathematically and not 1M from a game design stand point.
