Getting a bounty while in the outlaws refuge

I was selling some loot in the daggerfall outlaws refuge. In my inventory I had a crate from a thieves box and opened it, as soon as I did I received a bounty. I am aware I will get bounties if I am in a normal area and npc's see me, but in the outlaws refuge?

Outlaws are well known as law-abiding folks. They don't take kindly to people breaking the law and will report your ass to the guards. :|

Point taken! However on a serious note is this a bug or something zeni is intending to have occur?

Since you can't pickpocket or attack anyone in outlaw refuges and you can't interact with any of the containers inside, it probably never occurred to anyone at ZOS that the NPCs in there shouldn't count as witnesses if you do any criminal activity in front of them. It's only the introduction of those new crates that allows for a situation where they can witness a crime.

So I wouldn't exactly call it a bug - more of an oversight. You should still do a bug report in-game though. I highly doubt this is intended.

I have opened those containers in full view of other NPCs and did not get a Bounty. Was I supposed to? The items inside are not stolen. Note, these are the quest reward containers, maybe not the same thing the OP is posting about.

This just makes me think of the interesting concept of 'Thieves Guild' to begin with. I like the way Elder Scrolls seems to have tried to take it in the direction of themes like Oliver Twist/Fagan, or Vory v Zakone in real life. I think the Thieves Guilds in popular culture in general always seem a bit touchy feely. I like the way you see both sides of the coin in the TES series (although it can lean pretty touchy feely). Robin Hood also seems to be the obvious inspiration of the Gray Fox and some Baan Dar elements in the series. Generally speaking though, we never see the harsher edge of the Thieves Guild fall in line with things like the 'Thieves in Law' aka Vory v Zakone. I enjoy myself but in the series the Thieves Guild always feel as if they are likeable rogues. Sure they take a few baubles here and there but they also give to the poor and generally don't harm people physically. The Skyrim storyline did show a darker side with their Dark Brotherhood connection though, as well as some things involving the Prince Nocturnal. The point is I always equate 'Thieves Guild' with its real life counterpart (Vory) and I just have to say they would do horrible things to a suki (not nice term for someone who doesn't follow the thieves code). Ratting out your fellow thief to the town guards, that's punishable by death, and even in Tamriel that would be a bad thing.

I don't think you're talking about the same containers. There are containers you can get from thieves troves that contain stolen goods. When you go to open the container it's the same as stealing from a container in a home (as in: if you have auto-loot turned on for general looting, but turned off for looting stolen items it won't auto-loot). I seem to recall seeing a warning in-game when I first got one of those containers from a trove that you should be careful about opening it in public...

That's definitely a bug, @caleum, and will likely be fixed with next week's incremental patch. You shouldn't be getting bounty from opening the crate in an Outlaw Refuge.

I never got that warning. Then again, I started picking up Thieves Troves before I ever stepped foot in the Thieves Refuge or gained the new Thieves Skill line. Maybe they show up if you just have Legerdemain.

It is in the explanation which pops up when you open a thief's trove for the first time - it might not show though, if you have tutorial disabled - I think, there is an option to switch it off, so it might not show in this case.

Edit: but I guess, it is in the tool tip of the "large shipment container" as well.

I opened three stolen crates next to the "fence" and incurred a bounty. Then he offered to pay off my bounty for 337 gold. So kind of him.

Ah, not so much a bounty as an extortion racket then. :D

You should go back and replay Daggerfall - some of the Thieve's Guild and Dark Brotherhood quests overlap and you do get insights into their respective motivations.
