Beth forces u to pick a lock at the end of this quest, and i don't like it. Some of us stink at lockpicking! I decided after over 30 attempts to abondon this quest out of frustration, loss of time & money. Others object to it because it forces them to engage to criminal behavior.

What's your FPS like? I find lockpicking to be ridiculously easy when I'm playing on my desktop, but my desktop almost always gets decent to good FPS. On my laptop, even with lower graphics settings I get less FPS, and I find lockpicking to be significantly more difficult on my laptop, and at time when my FPS drops below normal it's absolutely impossible.

I hear that. I know how to pick a lock but I can only manage simple and intermediate. I have exactly one advanced success. It isn't lag or anything. I'm on console now but started on mac; it makes no difference, I'm just too slow to react. I got good at Skyrim's locks and just used spells in Oblivion. I wish there was an Open 100 spell in ESO.

    Hmm, then it's just practice.

There are generally 2 ways to know when to release the lockpick on a tumbler:
    1. Watch for the spring below the tumbler to start to cause the bottom of the tumbler to wobble.
    2. Listen for the sound it makes when the tumbler is in place.

If you're trying to do both at the same time, that may be your problem: focus on just one. If you're focusing on one and are having trouble, then switch and try focusing on the other.

Also, there are only a few different positions in which a tumbler can stop. With practice you'll get used to what those positions are, and be ready to release the pick at one of those positions the instant you see or hear your cue to release it.

You can just force the lock. Might take a few dozen tries, but it could be better than trying to pick it. Buy a bunch of lockpicks first and then go to town.

My condolences, that sounds extremely frustrating! :( I wish I could offer actual help….

I do have to agree that I kind of resent certain quests requiring crime - for some of my characters who have a problem with that and want to be really upstanding citizens.

I’m certainly not the best lock-picker out there, I can do master locks, though sometimes takes a few tries, but I also seem to go through lockpicks way more than I hear is ‘normal’. I don’t really know why, when I watch demonstrations it looks to me like I’m doing the same thing (maybe not as quickly), but one pick will only last me 3-4 chests, while I’ve heard many claim they can hardly remember the last time one broke of them. Who knows.

It definitely takes a light touch, and I think perhaps one’s mouse can have an effect on it - I have one that feels like the buttons are ‘heavier’ than the other. I also found I’m better at it on my computer where I’m sitting very close rather than on the TV screen across the livingroom.

Don’t worry about doing the pins in order, if you end up moving past one (my glitchy wireless mouse does this a lot) just do whichever one you happen to be over and then come back. I mention that only because at first I thought they needed to be done in sequence.

For lockpicking practice, Khenarthi’s Roost and Bleakrock isle have lots of chests if you just explore round the coastlines where there are relatively few enemies to bother with (I’m not sure about Stros M’kai).

Advanced and Master do require being fast. On these, pretty much if a pin doesn’t lock in at the second time you press it down after testing it out to see where it goes you probably aren’t going to get all of them down in time (especially if your pick breaks), but it’s always worth trying at least, sometimes it works out.

I had trouble with locks at first, but then I learned, and now... I open advanced and master locks on the first try, usually.

    Still...

It -would- be nice to have more options. Like... a special, rare and costly magic consumable that will open any lock, courtesy of a friendly thieves guild enchanter? For all those who suck at lockpicking, yet still occasionally have to get a door or chest open?

It'd be something I'd have expected to see with TG... it'd fit their theme.

If you are bad at lockpicking, take time and practice. You'll get better with a little time.I know I did.I love picking them now.I race to try to do a personal best in timing.
For anyone to get upset at having to pick a lock in an actual "game",which means not real life,..is kinda silly.
