where was the crown sales announced?

i bought yesterday 5500 crowns to be ready to buy the new Thieves Guild DLC Collector's Bundle and there was no discount at all. so... how come there's a discount now? where was this announced? i checked very carefully the news before i paid 35€ for the 5500 crowns. it's obvious that i would never pay 35€ for 5500 crowns a few minutes before the DLC release date if i knew that it would be 21€ a few minutes after the DLC release. i feel really cheated.

Not a 'for profit' company. I've never known an MMO to pre-announce a currency sale... mainly because they know people would save up for the sale instead of spending the regular amount. Thus, they make more money by not announcing it because more people buy at regular rates than sale price.

That's not how it works. For instance I work at a video game store (not gamestop) and we are running a sale on consoles. If someone buys a console a day before the sale starts and comes back to learn that we are all of a sudden having a sale then they are sadly out of luck. If exceptions are made then more people will want the same treatment and then you wind up losing money.

That's actually BS because do you only compensate the people who bought the day before? What about the ones who bought the day before that? Or the day before that? Eventually you get to the point where you have to compensate everyone who ever bought crowns when they weren't on sale. If they start down that road, then they're better off never having any sales on crowns, so that's what will happen. They'll never have any sales on them again, because people who bought before the sale whined about it.

this happened to me many times before, not only here but also on steam, but never this way.

i waited a lot before i buy the crowns, i carefully read all announcements, and i even searched for a discount on google. after confirming that there was no discount available at the moment and not even announced, i decided to pay for it a few minutes before the release date. only after the release the discount was made ---- this is not a normal situation, not at all --- this is cheating.

i never ever complained for something like this in more than 15 years buying games online, and i've been buying all my games online in the last 15 years. this was not my distraction, i looked for a discount, it's normal to find a discount for a pre-order, not after a few minutes of the release. this is something completely different from what you are defending.

    this was wrong!

Think of it this way. If you were going to run a sale would you A. announce it to everyone and have them wait to get their crowns at a discount and lose out on profit or B. put them on sale without notice so more people buy before the sale goes up and get more profit. Any logical business would choose choice B I would hope. And just as @UrQuan has stated, if you had bought crowns a day before the sale was announced you would probably still feel cheated.

It wasn't a pre-order, there was no pre-order price, why would you buy ahead of time when you could pay the same price at release? As I've said in my previous comments, other MMOs never 'pre-announce' a currency discount... so tying this currency discount to the price of a DLC is just plain WRONG. Just because buying the discounted currency means you'd effectively spend less to buy the DLC doesn't mean the DLC is directly discounted. They had a Crown sale at Thanksgiving, it was never 'pre-announced' either, so I'm certainly not going to complain that they didn't pre-announce this one either.

i think that the situation here is different, because those who bought crowns in the last days, most probably were preparing to buy the DLC. so, we are talking about something similar to a pre-order.

we are not talking about a few days after the release that they dropped the price, we are talking about a few minutes after the release.

also, it doesn't make me feel better to know that i paid much more for the crowns to get the DLC that i can't even play in the release date. so... i paid more, i paid before, and i couldn't even play it yet.

I still had a pack left over from when I bought 2 5500 packs from the last sale. Since I also have the 1000 from when they switched to TU and the first DLC costs 5500 total, that left me with 6500. If Dark brotherhood costs 2000 like this, maybe I can cover 2 more that and the one other.

If not, I'll wait on the next DLC until there is another sale.

Rule of thumb -- if there was a sale once, there will be a sale again. In other words, never buy 5500 packs full price unless you are okay with giving them the extra money.

yes, i learned that. i just don't understand the point of annoying a customer so that he'll never trust to pay in advance ever again. i learn, obviously, but i don't see what ZOS will earn with my learning.

i own a steam account with 12 years and i learned to trust to pay in advance a long long time ago and i never felt cheated. i have an ESO account for 2 years and i'm learning to never trust ZOS to give them money in advance.

really... i don't understand the point. but ok, i learned.

now i'd love to try the game.

Your sense of entitlement doesn't mean that you're actually entitled to anything. This was a sale. This wasn't a pre-order or anything like it. It's literally exactly what I described, and not what you're describing at all. No matter when they started the sale, or when they announced it there would have been someone whining that they just bought crowns and it's unfair.

The smart thing to do would have been to sub to ESO+ for a month to test out the DLC anyway (while getting 1500 crowns to put towards the DLC if you like it), rather than buying the crowns to pay for it in advance. That's what everyone who isn't already an ESO+ subscriber should do with every DLC (unless you know for sure that you don't want it).

well i kinda disagree. this day in the Netherlands at least many software and electronic stores (even with washers and dyers) they actually give you a discount if you just before it wen on sale or it was somewere else differently but that's their marketing stratagy. i don't see were this would help ZOS at all. not in the long term and especially not in the short term

I liked how Warframe does it. Every day you log in you get a random reward. In ESO it could be some mats, a page from a motif, a costume, an xp scroll, some pots, some gold, etc. with the more valuable rewards being more rare. One of the rewards in WF was a cash shop currency discount: from 25% to 75% off. And if you logged in every day, youd usually get that reward once a month (which Im pretty sure wasnt a random thing at all :P ). Could work in ESO, too.

That's because merchandise comes with return policies (some of which are more restrictive than others). Crowns don't.
