Upcoming Changes to Guard Ability - Well done ZOS!

I don't know how many of you caught this in ESO live, but (as a former tank player) I'm very excited to see this happen.

Guard is being redesigned so that you can "guard" another player and absorb a portion of the damage that this player takes. This will make the Tank play style not only valuable in PvE but very valuable in PvP. Having played SWTOR as a Tank, I have to say this was one of the best abilities tanks had access to.

Great change ZOS!

It's at 33 Minutes and 57 Seconds. For some reason the play won't start at that point even though it's encoded in the link.

Would be better if they would change it to a passive that has a chance to intercept a projectile and if you would activate it it would protect the person you are trying to protect.

This is a feature that (by my understanding) was created for tanks in SWTOR. It's one of the few features in an MMO in recent years that was innovative in my opinion.

ESO also didn't invent the "taunt" but it helped define the play style of tanks and "guard" goes even further bringing a lot of value to tanks.

Running a dungeon with a squishy DPS, put Guard on him. Want to be sure your healer stays up in PvP, place guard on him. Protecting someone on a siege weapon, Guard him.

Having played SWTOR as a tank and knowing what this ability brings to the table, it's exciting. Can't count the number of times everyone had to stop chasing the Hutball carrier and instead kill the tank who had him/her guarded first. It's an awesome ability.

Guard was present in WAR. Always threw mine on healers. It's about time we got it here. Now if taunts would reduce damage in PVP to other targets...

Are there other games (besides SWTOR) that have this ability? Being able to place protection on a single player and soak damage? Every other MMO you've tanked in had this?

Ah, didn't know that. Then I'll credit them for it. Still great ability. I agree taunt should reduce damage to a target in PvP. Not over powered considering that there are no area taunts.

WoW, Warhammer, pretty sure I had it The Secret World, can't remember Conan, pretty sure I had an ability like it in Star Trek online....hmm what else...so many MMOs

Definitely use(d) on my Juggernaut religiously in SWTOR.

Like so many things in eso, it's like the deliberately avoided looking at what other MMOs have added or improved over the course of their life span, instead make the same mistakes and keep players waiting :(

Same type of ability was also in LoTRO and that game came out in 2007, it was a awesome tank ability in both PvE and PvP.
So SWTOR is far from being the game that invented it.

Liked Warhammer Onlines version better. Shield wall was a channel ability that buffed him with def and increased blocking and upto 5 party members behind him with physical and spell resist upto 25m. Its been over 10 yrs but I think thats how it worked.

jip since DAoC wich was the first game offering guard in the year 2000 every MMO i played since then but ESO offering PvP had guard as an option...

the vanilla version from 2000 had two types:
intercept = 100% dmg transfer limitited to one attack every 30 seconds
and guard = blocking for the guarded person so high blockchances were sth to aim for...

with the second addon trial of atlantis they implemented a third option bodyguard supressing all melee attacks on the bodyguarded player, switching had a 15sec cooldown untill a newly bged player was effected by that affect.

a little picture from back then...

It's a great change but good luck with targetting your healer in a 24v24 with a buff that will probably have a 6 second duration.

I'm pretty sure it will be something you turn on and then it stays as long as you are within a certain range. Really hope it's not duration based. That would be awful.

Well, they are moving away from toggles....

that atleast is a usefull toggle...
and if they would use the beta toggle version people would not abandon toggles as they do now...

You know... it wasn't my idea. But it seemed I was the most reliable for everyone to assist and an armsman offered to play guard for me.

It worked soooooo well and it was a ton of fun. Actually, probably the most pve fun I ever had in a mmo.

Play a tank in an mmo called Pandora Saga.
The guard skill guarded 3 group members and the tank would take all of their damage plus their own. Im excited to give guard a try not that they have updated it to do what it should have done all along.
