What is "prox det"?

Pardon my ignorance here, but I hear this term being thrown around by a lot of PvPers these days on podcasts. I gather that it has something to do with AoE attacks and zergs. Is it some sort of skill, or new game mechanic?

It seems to be really important to PvPers, but I have no idea wtf they're talking about when they throw the term around.

Prox det or proxi is short for proximity detonation, a morph of the skill magicka detonation which you find in the alliance war assault skill tree.

It's an instant self cast, takes a few seconds to explode, and does more damage when more enemies are in the AoE.

There's a PVP skills called Magika detonation. One of its morphs is Proximity detonation which surrounds the user in a timed explosion that goes off after a few seconds.

This has led to a rise of low skill blob groups that literally do nothing but run this skill plus heals and speed enhancers to murder others as they exploit the damage mitigating effects of the game's AOE system.

Gamers being gamers we've shortned the term to prox det, and the scrubs who use it en mass as Prox or lag blobs.

Thanks for the answers all. Looking at the skill description, I can see where it might be problematic. It basically looks like a "suicide bomber" ability without the suicide.

Magicka det / morphs are Inevitable detonation and proximity det

Its a skill that as ppl above mentioned you get from the AvA skill lines.

It weirdly seems to do more damage against single targets than a large group at the moment though which is the opposite of how its meant to be.

I've been hit by it personally for 12K sometimes when no one was near me.

I do vaguely remember seeing a 27K on my death feed before but Idk if I was alone at that time.

Base Skill

Morph 1

Morph 2: known as "proxi", "prox det"

Note the values are different for your own tooltip, and that the damage modifier on the bottom of the tootip based on player count has also been changed significantly. (I think in Thieves Guild it is 10% per target, up to 100% more damage, with a decrease in base damage).

It's a skill that will make you feel like you got killed in 1 shot by a sourcer. Curse, prox det, crushing shock weaving, frag, mage's wrath. I am looking forward to using it when patch goes live since pretty much everyone that plays some pvp will have it.

Its an OP ability and you will normally see it 99% of all group battles in PvP because its so easymode..

cast time of 1.5 seconds or so, too slow and easily interrupted. Some sourcs I have 1v1 with they end up dying just trying to channel this ability because the cast time is too long

I took a 25k proxy det after mitigation, and I was all alone. Nothing else in this game has hit me so hard in PvP
