I'd like it if more guilds were specific about what their purpose was, but I suppose that sometimes a guild that evolved into a trade or a social guild didn't know that was what they were aiming at.
I do think the system as it works damages guilds being too specialised. eg I',m a member of an ork trading guild, all my non-orc characters benefit from that, they can still sell things through it. However it has an orc pvp offshoot. Vriddi would love to join it but can't really afford to use up a guild that only benefits 1 of my 8 characters.

I think multiple guilds are a must. It's not really reasonable to expect, say, a PVP guild with less than 500 members to also maintain a top trade location. Should members of PVP guilds not have a viable outlet to sell their extra stuff? Should members of an RP guild be doomed to only doing pledges with a group of other vampires, etc.? Running a guild is work enough without expecting your trade guild to organize 12 player trial runs.
And for those saying you shouldn't be able to change guilds easily, how would new guilds get started if players couldn't try them on for size?
If you ONLY like dungeons, or ONLY trading, or ONLY like PvP, then having one guild works. I want MORE guild spots. I recently dropped a guild that I really, really liked, for a guild that offered me more of what I needed now. And honestly there's a few others I'd like to join, because they have a community that offers something valuable to me.
Having only one guild wouldn't really work with the guild trader system. Limiting players to only one guild would lead to many players having to leave a specific guild they really like in order to be part of a reliable trade guild, and many players not being able to sell items so they can be part of a guild they really like.
At first I was in 3 guilds. then I joined a trade guild and had 4. Then I went nuts because of the chat hell of different guilds and I had so many mistells.
I left all guilds and am now in only one.

"I am a nightblade. Blending the disciplines of the stealthy agent and subtle wizard, I move unseen and undetected, foil locks and traps, and teleport to safety when threatened, or strike like a viper from ambush. The College of Illusion hides me and fuddles or pacifies my opponents. The College of Mysticism detects my object, reflects and dispels enemy spells, and makes good my escape. The key to a nightblade's success is avoidance, by spell or by stealth; with these skills, all things are possible."
