Incredibly unstable FPS :(

zen22937b16_ESO
Hi, I'm having INCREDIBLY unstable fps, in 2 seconds it can go from buttery smooth to unplayable and that's when I'm standing still!!

My specs:-

FX6300 CPU (3.6ghz, 6 cores)
16gb DDR3
EVGA GTX 770 2gb
SSD system drive

I will admit my system isn't "cutting edge" but it should be more than capable of running the game at a playable fps. but my fps are constantly bouncing around and I've never known a game to have such an unstable framerate.

Just stood still in a building for 4 seconds and I monitored my framerate. in FOUR seconds it went:- 10,36,99,42,100,11,9,45,53,58,9,97
if I try having a battle its insane, it goes from a buttery smooth 100fps to an unplayable 9 fps and back 2-3 times.. making it impossible to play.

Please fix it?

This is normal for eso. Don't expect it to be fixed

turn down shadows and water reflection, and both particle bars. turn off grass. Reload and try again

    also mind your add-ons

I have it on the lowest settings, shadows off, reflections off, both particle bars at the lowest, all effects like bloom, dof, distortion etc etc are off. as for add-ons I don't use any addons at all.

Everything is set to lowest or "off" and I'm on 9 fps... crazy, utterly crazy :(

Check that your processor isn't trying to run it on a single core

The fps become way too unstable for me in the last 3 patches, before then ESO was running smooth as a baby's skin.
If I die tomorrow I do not want to think of the game I could of played today, therefor I will play whatever I want today while securing a future to play in as well.

Let me guess... Framerate drops down to 10fps for a while and nothing in particular seems to trigger it? Game is basically unplayable for anything between 5 and 30 seconds until framerate goes back up because it's all juddery in terms of performance? And it does this repeatedly while playing?

Yeah, welcome to ESO after the introduction of the Imperial City patch. Performance was pretty decent before that, never had issues with framerate bombing out.

Yup, same problem here, though 90% of the time it happens in Orsinium areas.

    Revisiting:

I have a great computer, (32 gigs of RAM, 4GB Geforce card, 3.5GHz quad core (and yes hyperthreading is working), plenty of power, plenty of HD space, only my internet holds it back), and I still get these sudden unknown FPS lags.

For me they seem to coincide with reflective surfaces and water features. I have my water and shadow qualities down to low (but not off), but my view distance set to high (i need to SEE). Sometimes as I'm watching during my FPS drop, I notice my latency also goes high. My theory is that all the data about what items and waves to make shiney at a time, gets choked up by net and system but somehow going beyond the view distance, like it's trying to buffer ahead.

When I was using the Master Merchant add-on it would cause random drops, but it wasn't causing them all (I know because I turned MM off). There might be another add-on that's causing it, maybe it's ESOhead pulling up all the node spawn historical locations (not surprisingly), or any combination of all this stuff. Of course there's people here who get the FPS drops without add-ons so i'm probably just talking about the fuel on the existing fire.

My biggest concern is the lag I get when starting a fight. It's always the same, I'll hit 1-2 skill buttons after the first strike, and they won't fire off right away, but a second later they'll both hit in rapid succession, in their respective order. It's not my Latency and it's not my FPS (I've watched it carefully for 6 months now), it's some sort of skill activation lag, only at the start of a fight. Once I'm past that hurdle, everything works smoothly and as appropriate. I've turned off all combat clouds/floating numbers, tried with all add-on's off, it still happens. It's not too big of a deal since I don't go chin-first at tough bosses alone, but it does make vet mobs dicey sometimes (thank goodness I play a DK, huh? huh?). I just wish I knew the why, even if it can't be addressed. Inquiring minds.

I only get this in orsinium. It's so bad I barely go there anymore. In cyrodiil with tonnes of players I'm fine, maybe a drop in frames here or there but never stuttering. Even in buildings in wrothgar it goes from 60fps to zero for a few seconds, completely unplayable for Pve if I'm fighting a boss and I get 5 seconds of 0fps before dying.

I've noticed it gets worse the more times I've zoned in and out buildings /dungeons to the point where a relog will remedy it for a short time.

There are issues with the FPS. Something like memory leak or IDK. Usually when I play it is stable 60-70 FPS (average) and then after a big battle it drops to 20-30 (average) and it will not go up until client restart. After restart it is fixed.
@ZOS_RichLambert can you pass this issue to the code team.?

    Things to check:

    1. Under your My Documents Folder there is a Folder called Elder SCrolls Online, inside that Folder there is a file named shadercache.cooked if this file is larger then 10 MB in size it will cause problems. when the game is closed, delete the file and then restart the game, you will get a long load time, be patient while it rebuilds this file.

if you change any setting in the games graphics setting you must close the game and delete this file and re open the game.

Everytime you change a graphics setting in game and it reloads the UI it doubles the size of the shadercache.cooked file and will cause problems, its a bug that has been going on since beta and i simply gave up reporting it because its obvious after 2 years they will never fix it

    2. In the same folder, delete the UserSettings.txt file and restart the game.

See if your issues are fixed.

Either client side issues, either servers issues I also encountered this bug in the last days.
FX4100, 8GB, GTX660, 353.62, 2xHDD, w7x64. Also other issues seems to be around since IC launch... like texture LOD bug or random loading screens.

I got the fps drops even when I wasn't doing anything or nothing was happening around. :/
