Why is ornate gear so expensive in guild stores - am I missing something?

I want to ask, why is it, that ornate gear (the one that "we can sell to merchants for higher price") is so expensive in guild stores? I lately realized, that according to the merchant addon, I am able to sell one piece of ornate armor for 400 or 500 gold, which is pretty high.
What do people do with these items? Why is it so expensive? We are not able to research it, so what is the thing behind that price? Am I missing something?

Is it because it looks different (better than regular gear) when equipped, or what is the reason for such a high price of it?

What social status?- In a game where everyone and his dog will have income in proportional relation to the time he/she is playing the game, money does not create status. Everyone is basically achieving it automatically, so where is there status?

hmm, I thought so, probably ornate gear just looks "better", ok, good to know
