DPS is a metonymy for DD.

Metonymy is a figure of speech in which a thing or concept is not called by its own name, but by the name of something intimately associated with that thing or concept. Metonymies are frequently used in literature and in everyday speech and often chosen because it is a well-known characteristic of a word. Understanding metonymy is contingent on knowing the meanings of the associated words used, otherwise readers will be left confused by the context of a written work. Metonymies are often considered a hidden language, because many words can be used in the place of others.

Don't waste your breath. Dumb morons will write DPS instead of DD as they write xmas instead of christmas.

DPS, DD, the meaning is used as the same. It works pretty much in the game, so deal with it ;)

This thread mentions DD and DPS more than people in the actual game.

Most times all I ever see are LF tank or LF healer.

I've never been too keen on DPS because it's not really per second. It's a variable. Damage This Second, perhaps. When you get into add-ons it gets messy because just because you got an average of 41k damage that one time doesn't mean you can sustain it regularly or against a different resistance.

    DD isn't that much better.

I mean, if you're looking for something, throw a range out. If you're a level 10 and you want a person who averages between 1500 and 2000 damage per attack, say that. You might get somebody who doesn't deliver, but at least you were perfectly clear. If anything, adding numbers to the game should help people communicate better. It shouldn't be The Butthurt Dance for somebody every single time you try to group because information was withheld or exaggerated.

And you shouldn't have to join a guild to get psychological evaluation vetting, either. It's frustrating.

hi there, im here to deliver a sacred message:
    DD stands for Damage Dealer
DPS stands for Damage Per Second
the argument: LF DD for gold pledge means: Looking For Damage Dealer for Gold Pledge
the argument: LF DPS for gold pledge means: Looking For Damage Per Second for Gold Pledge - which does not make sense
I am DD - I am Damage Dealer
I am DPS - I am Damage Per Second (what the duck)
    understand the words you're saying/using
have a nice days filled with hearts and flowers

every time I see the Argument DPS I know what it´s supposed to mean...a damage dealer with the ability to provide high DPS is searching somethings....
so whats the issue about that?

However, I think the issue is that some people believe DPS is not a metonymy for damage dealer in THIS game.

The acronym DPS typically refers to a scalar value of a parameter related to a characteristic of an archetype. Damage dealer is an archetype, damage is a characteristic of the damage dealer archetype and DPS is a parameter describing damage. Other terms, such as ttk, ttl, sustain, burst, gear score etc., all describe the damage dealer.

Although I agree that DPS has become a metonymy for the damage dealer role found in many games, the MMO trinity model is being replaced, over time, with an MMO fps model. Elder scrolls, in particular, is less suited to a distinct archetype metonymy than many other games. Over time, patch by patch, ZoS has incrementally smeared the differences between archetypes almost to the point of non-existence. In this next patch, Templar healing is nerfed and DPS is buffed, leading many to speculate that there is no longer a healing archetype. Further, vigor, a stamina based heal used primarily by damage dealers, is arguably the best AoE heal, and perhaps the best overall heal, in the game.

The point is that every elder scrolls class uses DPS as a metric. In competitive play, healers must output a specific amount of DPS and damage dealers must output an acceptable amount of HPS (or equivalent). Some of the fastest runs I see are with groups composed solely of high DPS toons. A four sorc group is a barrel of laughs! So, in ESO, what players mean when they say 'DPS lfg' is 'toon with high average DPS lfg' and not necessarily 'dedicated damage dealer.'

Bottom line, DPS is a neologism and its use as a metonymy might not survive long enough to enter the common vernacular. Or at least, not with respect to ESO.

Edit: See @Acrolas' post for geek to common tongue.
