Dragonknight abilities... a spell?

Are dragonknight abilities such as lava whip considered to be a spell?
If you increase your spell damage, will the damage done from the ability increase too?
OR would you have to increase flame damage in order to increase the damage from the attacks?

yes, even if you get 3400 buffed spell your whip will still be a wet noodle.

An ability scales off the resource it uses. That means if it costs magicka it will be affected by your maximum magicka, your spell damage and your spell critical. Ultimates ( finally) scale off the respective higher values of these stats. Critical bonus damage is the same for all abilities.
Certain sets and champion points give bonus damage to a certain damage type (the silks of the sun set increases all fire damage for example) and those only work on the respective damage type, which is stated in the tooltip, regardless of resource used to cast the ability.
