Console player upset/scared how text chat will affect everything

I've been playing MMORPGS since the first GUI MMO came out as Neverwinter Nights. Before anyone here responds that Bioware's Neverwinter Nights was not the first GUI MMORPG your correct except I'm talking about AOL's Neverwinter Nights which was released a decade before Bioware's.

I've come to see the evolution in MMORPGS.

I remember when World of Warcraft literally changed everything from a genre that only appeased hardcore players and were not that popular till WoW changed all that.

For a time things have been stale no other game maker could top what WoW did.

When ESO was first released on PC it was a disaster however when it was released on the consoles to me it was the next evolution. Console players got to see all the hardwork and fixes and got to play it first hand!

It had a text chat yeah but it's voice chat completely changed what I expected in an MMO RPG.

It didn't just change the genre it evolved it.

I was watching your podcast and saddened to hear that not only do you not plan on brining this system to the PC but your adding a chat box I don't want nor need.

The game feels like a great elder scrolls game and I can see the beauty of the game but I am afraid a chat box will just reduce that beauty.

Will we have the option to turn it off?

Honestly as a PC GAMER and MMO VET I thought an always on mic system would be bad but your system proved me wrong.

I am not a fan of the chat box and want to make sure I can have it off at all times

Yes, voice chat is great, but it allows only one channel per time.
So currently you have to decide what you hear and what you do not hear:
your group OR your guild x OR your zone OR your friends OR ...

Text chat on consoles finally will allow us to have a background text box
to read ALL CHANNELS that may be important simultaneously.
This will finally allow the social experience a MMO is designed to be.

Yes, voice chat is a must, but text chat also is a must for a social society.
What is more important on your smartphone? Phoning OR texting?
Why having to decide? Having BOTH is important.

I'll admit the voice chat system for ESO is the best I've ever known. I love getting in a group and not having to get the party into Xbox live party chat. For groups and guild chat "when enough are in the same channel" it can't be beat.

That being said, a 20 meter radius for zone chat, having to switch between channels to talk to the entire guild and not being able to communicate with alliance members, imo is not conducive to good communication in an mmorpg. Let alone leaving a whole bunch of people (for several different/already discussed reasons) no way at all to communicate.

It's going to be optional. So turn it off and keep playing as you are. Problem solved.
I want to change the world. I'm just to lazy to do it.

Text will be good for pvp as long as there is a channel for the whole alliance so you can communicate across cyrodiil.

While I love that feature coming,
I also am fearful of the new lag dimensions this will bring on consoles.

Currently, PvP already becomes a slideshow with ca. 100 players on screen.
So what will happen if entire alliances meet in battle...

I hardly think 1 thread, where most posts are disagreeing with the sentiment, qualifies as "Now people are upset or afraid of it."

Also, you do understand that individuals can have differing opinions right? So there is no contadiction, those who support text chat still do, those who are against it still are. The community isn't some entity that can only have one opinion, because it is made of individuals.

If I check my guilds, theres 70 guys online but only 2 of them uses voice chat, so chat is indeed needed. I never understood why they didnt do it, ESO is simply too mainstream to not to have chat. But lets see the positive side, when they actually add Chat, that should bring more people to the game back, maybe that was the plan all along.

The option to turn it off or never having it on is great as long as we are not forced though these same people who prefer to type rather then voice chat will have the same complaints how no one can see what they are saying.

Also I can log onto two channels at a time so I can hear my guild and general if I want and it works just fine I just have to switch my main so I can talk in that channel.

We have people all the time mostly HARDCORE players spamming text asking why people don't stop and read the text well everyone in Voice Chat during pvp is like, 'get a mic' which all PS4s come with.

The only situation to me the chat box can be helpful is if the person is deaf. Even then just going from experience within that game people purposely ignore the people typing or ridicule them in Voice Chat

The ridicule part might sound harsh but when you got a person demanding and insulting people via a chat box demanding we all type to respond than yeah

Text chat is necessary stop being selfish. Some of us have loud kids and boring, long days so we play MMOS and don't get on the mic to save our fellow players' ears. Wait until you have me on your team in cyrodiil and i save your butt you will want to see my text saying "ZERG Heading to Chalman"

I can only see text chat improving the situation on consoles, while voice certainly has its advantages in certain areas its lacking so bad in many other areas, text chat will help fix some of the short comings of voice while also finally including those members of our community who can't/won't use voice(myself included).

Text is great for these types of games where you might have conversations going in a group, zone, locally, guild, and friends all at the same time.

Sure, voice is great in a group environment for communicating things like boss mechanics, but even then for most things in this game, text would work as well.

Lastly, I cannot stand voice in open environments as inevitably some moron has their mic gain way up or another runs with the mic open non-stop providing us with a background of babies crying, conversations with significant others, dogs barking, fire engines and trucks and such, their mom telling them to clean up or eat dinner, etc - leading me to constantly need to fiddle with settings and mute players.

So for me, I use voice selectively for certain group content, and use text the majority of the time to communicate with multiple parties all at the same time - just like I do IRL.

Text chat will bring more good than bad. Even with people running about the game and generally the population of Consoles seems to be quite strong. It feels empty unless you happen upon someone with a mic, extremely rare in the middle of nowhere and almost always jibberish and nonsense from those in the cities. VOIP helps the game because of the limited space of Comms on the Consoles outside the game. But with VOIP only the experience on Console has been hindered and the excuses for not adding Text has been proven to be false.

The good that Text Chat will bring -
    • Long distance communication across zones.
    • Adjunct to the LFG Tool. Or gathering interested players for World Bosses and Dolmens.
    • Better coordination for PvPers in Cyrodiil.
    • Expanded communication within Guilds.
    • Information sharing that might otherwise be missed due to VOIP.
    • The ability to reach more players for the purpose of trading without Trade Guilds.
    • The ability to form and participate in RP that might otherwise be hampered by VOIP Only.
    • Can help with reporting players harassing others by providing evidence of the acts.
    • The Deaf, Mute and socially anxious being able to readily communicate with the community.

    The down sides-
    • Takes up some space on the screen.
    • Might be a bit difficult to read for those with bad vision.
    • Possible spamming by those looking to trade.
    • Nonsense happening on VOIP crossing over onto Text.

I might be missing some. But the arguments against to my knowledge dont outweigh the benefits.

Text chat will be great for me for 1 reason. That 1 reason is because of my console being in the living room, and my family being maybe a few feet a way watching T.V or playing their games and I currently can't move it, I have no choice, but to type in Xbox Live party chat as a result. Text chat will allow me to get involved in guilds and communicate freely without upsetting my family or friends in game. I hope they don't take to long to implement it though. So I am very glad it's coming.

There are or assumed options. No one knows what is actually going to come and what it looks like so it's all our assumption that it's going to be the typical chat box.

It's going to bring a lot of things.
-good for those who have begged for it (in their personal desire as its a fulfilled request)
-bad for those who don't want it
-other for those who will use it with voice
-crazy for those who will use it to spam, incite arguments and belittle others
-bans for those who ...well you know....

In the end, it's just going to create pockets of players who will mix and match , use one over the other and situations where some will and won't do things based on the feature.
Depending on who you are and what experiences you have as well as those you hope to have, this will be a difference maker. Maybe some will come and definately some will leave. Trading will change, PvP will change and non group finder groups will change.

Once actual details are released...new threads will pop up so for....just waiting to hear and see what's what

Respect your opinion but can't wait for text chat.

It's simplicity and ability to communicate with the entire population streamlines so many things.

My only fearis are it will completely kill the group finder tool and the people who use such tools to insult or aggravate others as I use that you'll to complete daily pledges.

Couple all the positives with the fact it's optional, looking forward to it.

I rarely read text on PC if I am in a group with mics. That is why I group with guild members. So that there is voice chat. If I am in a group with 3 with mics and 1 without, someone with a mic will have to tell me when the one without types something because my text chat is closed. I don't ridicule, but I also am not interested in reading.
