Sometimes it's nice to play a character that is the opposite gender to your being. People have a range of reasons, but the reason I made my NB (she has been lvl 15 for months collecting dust at the moment) is because her combat style/animations and sneak, etc look quite cool, kinda like Lara Croft or something. and I couldn't care less about the gender of the player, because if one's done their research, they'll find that gender is irrelevant on a metaphysical & fundamental level.

I don't care what gender players choose in a game where you can play as a cat or a lizard. But I would never choose a female character for myself, simply because I identify as a male and I see my characters as an extension of myself. If you're the type of player who sees their characters as a band of warriors that they command then it's perfectly reasonable that both genders be represented.

Some classes seemed more "girly" to me so have male and female characters, but my friend can't play a game as a female. Played warframe and he wouldn't play any of the female war frames even though some were badass

So I know there are people who think it weird and take it to extremes. But I do worry they are either insecure or taking immersion to a whole new level.

I'm a female, I mostly play females character that I customize to make them pretty - cute -innocent and pure. My ideal version of feminity. And if I was a guy, I'd fall in love with them!

I also have a male character. He is not looking like the man I'd fantasy upon. But represent sort of what I'd like to be if I was a man. So he is very manly, and fierce, and strong. When I play him, I feel super badass and its a nice feeling.

Not that it matters, but I'm a male player.

Every game I play, I always start my first character as an extension of me and name "him" WldKarde.

This is my first MMO, so the concept of rolling alts was new to me. As time went by I began playing with different classes and figured since there are 4 classes and 8 slots...what the hell, I'll make a male and female of each class.

As it turned out, my 7th character (a female Stamplar btw) became my main.

Why? I honestly have no idea.
I treat each of my characters as just that...a unique character. She just has a personality and play-style that I find fun.

I'm not very good as a player, and if these forums are to be believed, my main character will never be "The Best of the Best" either.

OK...so be it...kinda thought playing a game was supposed to be fun.

    I'm a guy...my main character is a girl...

I have FUN playing ESO ;)

You overanalysed it methinks. Choosing your own gender is a choice as much as choosing the opposite gender. If I can't immerse myself as well as a female character it has nothing to do with fragile gender roles or lack of creativity lol.

i have 6 characters 5 females 1 male all nords except 1 dark elf. its hards to look at the back of a guy hours on end its hard for me to do that but what sucks about playing a chick is that the armors dont look as good as if my male nord was wearing it.
also female armors look out of proportion. i spell that right.

Yes, a cat is damn fine. Oddly enough, when I play as humans/elves, it's categorically female, because as a woman, I relate to them better. I guess. I don't know really. I just roll them and I'm happy.

But my two Khajiit are males.

There. Feel free to analyze that.

Truth be told, old "WldKarde" always has a bald head...I must admit that I do edit out the beer belly though ;)

As a guy I play both but generally lean towards female characters in games.

there is an old idea that if you play a girl your not manly, or confused about your sexuality or something. This is usually not the case, that said in Live action games or table top I never play a female because that is much more an extension of yourself. In my life I have only met two people that played as females in a live action setting, one was in fact gay but was not confused about it (still made people uncomfortable though) and the other was just being silly and that was obvious too.

for me it depends on the role of the character, I lean towards sneaky agility based characters and women are characterized as being smaller and more nimble, they also often have a smaller appearance even if it does not effect the hitbox. and as someone who is obsessed with style, appearance, and symmetry they often have a better artistic style because of the common hourglass figure and more interesting clothing options as they usually get everything guys can wear plus what only girls should wear (orc dudes in dresses aside), where as guys are a box with sticks poking off of it who generally should not wear what girls wear.

I also have a much more easy time disassociating myself from and roleplaying as a female character, because its obviously not me, so what is her personality? the same can be said for beast races. if I play a human male that looks similar to me I will imprint myself upon it and it will become an extension of myself rather then a character.

and finally its a matter of exclusivity, when I started playing it was with a bunch of guys, who because of old ideas would not play female characters because it was "weird" or "wrong". so I played as a female character because it made me unique, slowly but surely they wanted to be special too and started making female characters. now these days it the reverse, there all playing female characters so I made a male, we also have more women playing who play mainly female characters.

its just a society and comfort thing, its not a problem for some and really awkward for others and neither is right or wrong just different.

however if you start pretending to be a girl to go along with your character THEN it gets weird.
