Do you think this game can be a long term MMORPG on both console and PC?.

Akerith
Akerith
What do you think?.
I recently started this game and loving it so far, really do.
As most MMORPG's,I am always scared about its future and population;can you see ESO in let's say 10 years on console and pc?.
Or seeing how PS5 is releasing in 4 years (?),could Zenimax abandon console players?.
That's what scaries me most, console version having less life cycle than pc for new generations coming up and seeing how there isn't cross platform,I'd lose my progress.

I could see character transfers through same ecosystem on PS Plus or XBLive as long as Sony and MS let it happen and if ZOS engineers have the resources to make it happen.

As far as this game lasting 10 years....I hope so but it is many years behind on being a modern MMO.

I do think they thought about something in that aspect..but as a player, i wouldt think about...just keep loving the game, enjoy it while its here!

I do see TES franchises with more 10 years
Admiral Primo of Thir - Altmer | Templar | Aldmeri Dominion |
    Primo I - Imperial | Dragon Knight | Ebonhart Pact |

The strategic advantage developed by good warriors is like the movement of a round stone, rolling down a mountain 300 meters high. The force required is negligible; the result, spectacular.

I absolutely think so. However, I do remember reading a statement (some time ago) that they only had a five-year plan for TESO.

    Silivren (Silly) Thalionwen | Altmer Templar | Magicka | 9-Trait Master Crafter/Jeweler | Master Angler | PVE Main - Killed by U35
Jahsul at-Sahan | Redguard Sorcerer | Stamina | Werewolf - Free Bites | PVP Main
Derrok Gunnolf | Redguard Dragonknight | Stamina | Werewolf - Free Bites
    Liliana Littleleaf | 9-Trait Grand Master Crafter/Jeweler (non-combat)
Amber Emberheart | Breton Dragonknight | Stamina | Master Angler
Vlos Anon | Dunmer Nightblade | Magicka | Vampire - Free Bites
Kalina Valos | Dunmer Warden | Magicka | Vampire - Free Bites
    Swiftpaws-Moonshadow | Khajiit Nightblade | Stamina
Morgul Vardar | Altmer Necromancer | Magicka
Tithin Geil | Altmer Sorceress | Magicka
Dhryk | Imperial Dragonknight | Stamina

Guild Master - ESO Traders Union
    PC/NA - CP 2560+

This game has the beauty and combat to give WoW a run for longest running MMO IF done right. Bugs/lag need to be cleaned up a ton and quicker than current fixes. New content needs to be added quarterly as they are planning. New content should include both PVP and PVE changes. And by that I mean actual content, not a change in class skills/balance. Even if it's something simple like adding in a new siege weapon or other new feature or even new quests. As long as they have something new to do, they will enjoy the game.

People won't stay in a broken game with minimal content added or one that's unplayable in primetime(Server sided lag).

In order to maintain the longevity of the game there needs to be content which has progression unrelated to the gear grind.

You're right, that would be MMR in PvP and more elaborate PvE challenges with scores.

Vet maelstrom had a short time period where the score you received was the reward, not the items. But that time has passed, and is evident because some of the top scores have not changed in a month. If content can capture that score competition, and appeal to a wider audience, then it will promote the longevity of the game.

However this game is fairly young in terms of MMO ages. But these features should be a priority after the Dark Brotherhood dlc.

As others have said, we need replayable content that isnt artificial (like grinding a dungeon over and over for gear). Normally this would mean PvP but in this game it is completely broken atm.. although personally for myself, even if the lag was fixed I still would not step foot in Cyrodil because I completely hate large scale PvP. I would like PvP arenas and battlegrounds as soon as possible.

    The only thing MMO about this game is;

    1 Trials
    2 Pledges
    3 Craglorn
    4 PVP

The rest is a horribly easy boring single player game.

I really REALLY want to say yes... but I just don't think it does. Too many compromises. Too many problems that seem like they can't be fixed. Too many broken promises.

If it does survive, we would probably see ESO migrate to the PS5 and XboxTwo (?) DCUO has moved quite successfully from the PS3 to the PS4.
What ESO really needs is an Auction Horse.
    That's right... Horse.

It absolutely can. The graphics alone I think would survive the next few years, maybe decade.
The game is easy to learn and pickup, maybe tough to master. And I don't think anyone on these forums can argue the main story from 1-50 (you know, defeating Molag) isn't amazing. It was one of the best journeys I can recall over my vast history of MMOs. Coming in a close second would the Pirate Island experience when Age of Conan launched (sorry I forget it's name now).

This game has charm. Normally people don't take time to write positive reviews but are quick to post the negatives. So sometimes when taking a tour de forums we get into a skewed paradigm that the sky is falling on this game.

It's not. If I won the most recent jackpot I would have bought out ZOS and used all the money to keep the game afloat for you guys.

Well, the game is nice. It has had some moments. If you just showed me the game and asked that question, I would say yes.

However, it is the team running the game and making decisions that will ultimately answer that question. And I wish it wasn't true, but that team has demonstrated some problems over the past couple years in terms of management and communication that make it difficult to see this game ever gaining momentum again.

tl;dr: No. The high point of this game, as a business venture, was console launch. We are on maintenance mode now. This game will follow the path of most other MMOs, and slowly bleed users over time.

Their competition, DC Universe Online, released on the PS3 and PC 5 years ago. 2 years ago they released again on the PS4 making their platforms supported PS3,PS4, and PC. They will be launching on the Xbox One this spring spanning 4 supported platforms over a 5 year period of time. They will also be adding crossplay between the PC and PS servers later this week.

If ZOS stops giving away money irresponsibly ($1m USD) then it's quite possible they could still be supporting older platforms down the road.

This is already the longest (by far) that I have ever stuck with a game, June - Present. I think they've done a tremendous job and if they can stick to their quarterly injection of new content, I think it will last a long time. Also, if someone can dig up that old map that shows all the regions of Tamriel that they plan to add over the years, you may feel better :)

    In the short term, yes.
But the game is gonna get to that age (assuming it does) when decisions will need to be made.
Square Enix recently announced they'll be stopping support for console versions of their 13-14 year old mmo Final Fantasy 11.
Of course, that game just recently put out it's last content update, and is in maintenance mode now, pretty much.
I'd wager its because of a dwindling (maybe?) player base and it's cheaper/easier to support one version (pc).
    Time will tell.

If they could ever get their crap together and live up to any of the promises they made before PC launch, it could maybe have sustainability. But as it is, I don't see it lasting 10 years. All I hope is that they finish telling whatever story they're gearing up to tell as foreshadowed at the end of the Wrothgar dlc. And if they can "end" the game with some epic event like FFXIV did before they rebooted themselves, that would be amazing.

The game is barely an MMO. ZOS made promises to make it more of one, but they've made promises before that went un-fulfilled. Can ESO last? Yes. Can it be transferred the next gen of consoles? Yes. Both FFXIV and DCUO have moved from PS3 to PS4 for example. However, there is a line when there is so much that is broken and so many promised go unfulfilled that people just give up, and move on to other games. That's really what I think will be the downfall of ESO more than anything else.

The game is very close to finishing out its second year. Thats a huge triumph for an MMO as it speaks to the health of the game. The MMO has won numerous awards that wouldnt have gone to it if it was failing or beginning to falter. And generally speaking, and I dont know how theyll be able to keep this pace, Ive never seen an MMO that was dropping content this regularly the way ZOS has been able to do of late. Granted it took them two years to get themselves at this stage where they can churn out content every 3 months. But again, had the game been falling apart. Theyd have been spending that money elsewhere or not at all. Makes me think the B2P Model was more or less forced on them thanks to the Console release. I cant say as to who pushed it on them if it was one party or both. But the B2P Model doesnt harm them in the least as it opens up financial avenues they didnt have before under the Sub Model. The B2P Model also helps secure them in the MMO Market as most of their competitors have moved over to a F2P/B2P Model and had ESO remained Sub would of been at a disadvantage.

PS5 is as you said, at the very least 4 years out. Thats 4 years of content guaranteed. With atleast another 2 years of support from Sony as they transition from PS4 to PS5. So somewhere around 6 years if we're expecting the PS5 in 2020. How ZOS will handle the migration of players to PS5/XBOX(X) is something they will have to hammer out as that gets closer. More than likely ESO will not follow over to the next generation. As the team is already spread across the platforms as is. And ZOS would have to hire even more Developers to support moving ESO over which might need another build of the game much like they had to do with Consoles the first time round. It just wouildnt make sense to build a new version of a 6 year old game to fit the next generation of consoles.

only if they get their fingers out of their behind and fix, balance and improve what we already have, they already blew alot of potential customers during the non-unlimited days, they really need to do these or end up with an impending doom, as even if it's an Elder Scrolls game, it'll get dropped when someone else makes similar with more improved features that ZoS failed to heed

You really underestimate the power of the TES label - why the heck would i want to play any other fantasy RPG, if my main cause to be here is the TES world and the TES lore behind it?- This is not about features, this is about Tamriel and nothing can replace this - well, some of the other continents of Nirn could maybe, but this would still be Elderscrolls.

Few people will agree with you. I like TES lore but painting an MMO with so many problems as ESO to look like its part of TES is not enough, not in the long run.

I agree though that the fact it is part of TES franchise guarantees that Z> will do what they can to not let it fall. The 1mln pr stunt bought them 3 weeks of increased population for example.
