Considering getting a laptop

David123
David123
I'm not a computer techie so I'm looking to those that are. I'm considering picking up this laptop MSI GS60 Ghost Pro. I think the specs are good but I'm not sure. I'd like to play on Ultra settings with 60 fps. I do not know if it is doable with this laptop. Is it possible?

Thank you for your time.

If you are limited in space or travel a lot, then obviously a laptop is the way to go. However, if not, then you would be much better off getting a desktop system just for the fact they are much easier to upgrade. Having said that, I have a ASUS Republic Of Gamers laptop and love it. My wife has a MSI Gaming laptop and has had several problems with it, especially concerning heat dissipation. And I'm wondering why you want to go with a 15.6" 4K display? If I was going for that kind of resolution, I would get at least a 17". Otherwise it seems that the extra expense for the 4K display is just a waste, and that seems to be the major cost of that system you are looking at. None of the other specs justify that kind of a price tag.

Yes I am aware desktops are great but I'm interested in a laptop. Thanks for sharing your experience with Asus and your wife's with MSI. I did come across the Asus Republic of Gamers. I may have to take another look at it.

And it wasn't the 4k display that caught my attention. It was the specs, 1 TB, NVIDIA GeForce GTX 970M, 16 GB memory and so on. I'm not very good with computers. I did some research but I'm no expert. I appreciate your time.

One more thing, it has 6GB dedicated video memory. That's good right? Or no?

I have used a gaming laptop but I have to agree its not the way to go. Even if you do travel, they are a bit monstrous to tote around. Even at seemingly equivalent specs as a pc, they do not seem to perform as well. Then the money you spend for one would go a lot further with a desktop. Only reason would be space.

I forgot to mention the reason I became interested int this one is how light it is. I don't want a big, bulky laptop sitting on my lap. It needs to be light enough so it's comfortable on my lap.

That's one of the problems with lightweight laptops, heat dissipation. Usually there is not enough room in there for a good heat sink, and the fans are usually not adequate to properly disapate the heat. My wife's MSI gets hot enough so that it's actually very uncomfortable to have on her lap when gaming. She does have a fan lapdesk that plugs into the USB port, but still that's something extra she has to tote around. Granted the newer processors require lower power and thus less heat, but be sure to read the reviews of what others have said to see if there are any heat issues no matter which laptop you purchase.

And yes, the 970M with 6GB of VMEM should be great with ESO :)

    Thanks for the feedback.

When looking at a laptop the first part I review are the specs. The second thing I look at are the reviews. Thank you Ashtaris and technohic for your feedback.

Ashtaris since you mentioned Asus ROG I've been looking in to them. The G752VY-RH71 looks interesting.

If either of you or anyone has any recommendations on laptops please feel free to chime again.

    Thanks again!

I am a very happy ROG notebook user as well. I have one of the G751 baby. 17.3' 3D (The Witcher on 3D is pretty funny!) Honestly, it's pretty super. The only thing is due to the 17.3' size, it's not something that you take with you everywhere you go. It travel with me most time but with a whole lot of care in the handling. Good luck!

I play ESOTU and other games, on a Dell http://www.dell.com/us/dfh/p/alienware-m18x-r2/pd Alienware MX18 R2, blazingly fast, as fast and powerful as my desktop computer. I have not overclocked the i7 CPU's (which you can do, BUT *at your own risk*), but I did max out the SSDD's (solid state disk drives - way faster than spinning/physical hard drive, BUT can be prone to break if optimized etc) and the RAM (*Generally speaking* - temporary memory space for applications/games etc to be loaded into, more RAM = faster execution of X).
Be warned that the Dell Alienware laptop is very pricey, I paid over 5K for mine (custom build by Dell to my specs) but it is maxed out. If you're a serious gamer and have the cash to splash I recommend the Dell Alienware MX18 R2.

Which is a paid-for product placement, not a statement of value.
