from email:
$1 million (USD) will be paid to sweepstakes grand prize winner as a fixed 20-year annuity payment of $50,000 per year.

Question: If ZoS goes out of business in, hypothetically, a year from now, will those payments continue?

    Parallel question: If the winner passes on in within the 20 year period, will his/her estate continue to receive the money or will the annuity terminate?

    If you read the rules/terms/details; it states that the payment is purchased by Bethesda from a company that specializes in this.

    You won't be getting checks printed on Bethesda stationary, they'll be paid to you by the annuity company, as for whether or not they can go out of business before it terminates and deny you some of the money, I don't think Ive ever heard of it happening before.

    I'm sure there is more language but....this is the public info so hopefully, it's OK to place here.

    5. PRIZE CLAIM CONDITIONS
    Sponsor will attempt to notify each selected entrant via email within approximately forty-eight (48) hours of the Draw Date at the email account provided by the entrant in his or her The Elder Scrolls ® Online account if that was the means of entry or provided on the Mail-In Entry form if that was the means of entry.

    In order to be declared a prize winner, each selected entrant must:

    (i)complete and return to Sponsor (or its authorized agent) by the deadline specified in the documents a written affidavit of eligibility (or declaration and release) and publicity release form (collectively, the “Release”), releasing the Sweepstakes Group from any liability in connection with this Sweepstakes or the acceptance, possession, use or misuse of any prize;

    (ii)complete all tax documentation required by the law of the jurisdiction in which the selected entrant resides (“Tax Documentation”);

    (iii)have a bank account at an institution to which Sponsor's bank is permitted and willing to transfer funds, directly or through correspondent bank relationships; and

    (iv)If entrant is a resident of Canada: correctly answer without assistance of any kind, whether mechanical or otherwise, a time-limited mathematical skill-testing question to be administered at a mutually convenient time in person or by telephone.

    Sponsor will attempt to notify each selected entrant a maximum of two times. If selected entrant does not respond within three (3) calendar days of first attempt by Sponsor or Sponsor's agent, Sponsor will make a second and final attempt to notify the selected entrant. Return of any prize or winner notification as undeliverable, inability to reach selected entrant or failure of selected entrant to respond to notification within three (3) calendar days of second attempt by Sponsor or Sponsor's agent, failure to provide proof of eligibility (if requested), Release documents, Tax Documentation or other required documentation in a timely manner, failure to correctly answer the skill-testing question (as applicable), or other non-compliance with these Official Sweepstakes Rules may result in disqualification, forfeiture of the prize and, at Sponsor's sole discretion, selection of an alternate eligible entrant for the forfeited prize at random from all remaining eligible Entries received, who will be subject to disqualification in the same manner.

    6. PRIZES
    There will be one (1) Grand Prize winner, and one thousand (1,000) Secondary Prize winners. Prizes will be delivered to winners on or about February 22, 2016, provided that winners have fully complied with the terms of Rule 5 (“Prize Claim Conditions”), above.

    Grand Prize: One million U.S. dollars ($1,000,000 USD), to be paid as an annuity of $50,000 USD per year, for twenty (20) years, without interest (Approximate Retail Value (“ARV”) based on present value: $775,000). By accepting the annuity, the Grand Prize winner agrees to release the Sweepstakes Group from all liability and responsibility for payments of the prize and acknowledges that such liability and responsibility shall rest only with the annuity company from which the annuity is purchased for the winner.

    NOW IF THE COMPANY GOES OUT OF BUSINESS
    - it seems to be based on a few things in the state the company resides and or, addition to the state the winner resides in.

    here is an old example: https://lottery-pa.custhelp.com/app/answers/detail/a_id/1201/~/what-happens-to-the-prize-money-if-a-company-who-got-an-annuity-bid-goes

    *This may not be accurate*

    What happens to the prize money if a company who got an annuity bid goes bankrupt?

    What happens to the prize money if a company who got an annuity bid goes bankrupt?

    The obligation to pay the prize is based upon contract law. The method that the state uses to fund the prize is a business decision. During a three-month period in 1986, the Lottery funded prizes through the purchase of Treasury notes, but then switched to annuity contracts. If we purchase an annuity from a company that goes bankrupt, the state still has a contractual obligation, so the Lottery would pay the prize.

    As a footnote, although we do use the lowest bid, it is the lowest bid from a bidder that qualifies to submit a quote. Those insurance companies qualifying are all companies whose names are easily recognizable to the general public. In addition we have a limit on the amount of outstanding obligations we fund through any one company.

    The million dollar portfolio is likely managed with the vast majority of the funds in growth assets, meaning not cash, but marketable securities. Assuming the annuity company is FDIC insured, in the event of bankruptcy (keeping in mind that this is the annuity company, not Bethesda) the FDIC will cover up to $250,000 of portfolio assets, plus up to $250,000 cash.

    So you're saying one person with a 50k salary would be what ZOS needs to fix the bugs in game?

    First off, programmers make a little more than 50k

    Second, it takes more than one. Coding is a bit complex

    It's really funny, how mostly everyone agrees on rather spending the money on fixing the game's issues. But would ZOS ever change their mind?

    I guess, it would be both the worst promotion aswell as the best at the same time. A truly revolutionary act...

    But they're not giving away $200k or $400k per year. You have to think about it as the $50k per year that they are budgeting.

    1. You don't know what their annual budget is. All any of us knows is the sum total.
    2. Even a mere 50k per year would have been better spent on more hardware or more maintenance.

    It's like half the people posting here believe they are just giving away the money for the hell of it.

    It's a promotion. It is meant to entice people to play more and attract new players to the game. You think they are giving away 50k/year out of the goodness of their hearts?

    No. They expect it to bring in extra revenue over and above the 50k/year. Otherwise it would be a failure of the investment.

    By the way, since they are investing the money in an annuity fund, you can expect the fund to make at least a moderate 3-4% annual interest. Which means initially the cost of payout will be only $10-20k/year. All they have to attract is 1000 people to buy the game (20$) and/or spend $20 in-game and they will have covered the cost for the year.

    My guess is they have done the math and it will cost them next to nothing.
