So how long does maintenance usually last?

MolliMayhem
So for the second week in a row, ready to play but server down for maintenance, apparently since 8:00 EST. It's now 11:00...
any ETA for them to finish? Is there anywhere to find this information?
Thanks

Generally I go with a 4-6 hour window before I start checking for dev responses

Only people that know how much longer its going to be is Zos (sometimes i don't think they even know)

Good lord! And this happens every week? Is it always the same day/time? Some way to plan would be helpful.

The "official" forums for news about this are WAY out of date, too.

Anywhere from 40 minutes to ~15 hours. Make your guess
The maintenance does usually start at this day and time, though last week we for some reason had it on another day(it also lasted 13+ hours...). ZOS obviously never knows when it can possibly end so in order to not give us false hopes they usually prefer not to say anything

Edit: They also don't do maintenance some weeks, sometimes several weeks in a row.

Most are usually fast, not passing 1~2 hours. But yea, if we're lucky we can have like, a 10 hour Forum fest in here.

The forums were very interesting, though.

Gina stated on the patch notes thread that they had encountered a problem during this maintenance, and are working in getting it taken care of. That could be why it's taking longer.

They sure do run into a lot of problems during routine maintenance.

I don't think it's a matter of them "finding" bugs, so much as it's them just....messing up what they are trying to do.

If I brought down a server at work for maintenance, and it took me an extra 3 hours to bring it back online, I don't think my boss would like me telling him "Oh, thank god we found that problem during our routine maintenance."

I know right? And this has been the norm since the game out in April 2014...

Why do people always complain when something like this takes longer then expected or they think it should. No game has perfect times where everything always comes up in an hour maybe two. Things happen it's software and machines they aren't perfect and never will be

Under promise, over deliver is probably what they should try to do. Tell everyone maintenance will take 8 hours and when it comes back up in 2 instead, people will be saying how efficient ZOS is now.

    Oh I know

    How condescending of you two.

I have said this before, and Ill say it again. This is the only MMO that I have ever played that must keep servers down for regular maintenance for over two hours on a regular basis. Either ESO is a much more complicated system than every other MMO out there, or there is something worrisome how they do things.

The other suspect problem is how they feel no need to actually keep people informed or give them ETAs except hidden in some thread somewhere. Oh, and the fanboys will chew you up (see above) and spit you out if you choose to question them about it. Very unprofessional.

I have played others that were worse. Sometimes I couldn't play WOW for a week. When I played Rift they took the servers down every week as well and if the servers didn't come back up in 30 minutes people were yelling at them for taking too long. software is tricky. It doesn't work when we want it to. it doesn't work how it should and most times when we need something quick it moves like a turtle because it knows we are in a rush.

Threads like these pop up on every game forum I have played even the one I played where for at least the USA the servers were down in the middle of the night. I would go to the forums and check out the patch notes to find threads upon threads about the length or why this time instead of this time. It's common. I wasn't trying to seem condescending but I don't mind downtime it most of the time means something is being fixed, added, corrected, adjusted, whatever to make a possible better experience.

As for keeping the ETA hidden I think that is smart Rift used to say something would take in hour and god forbid they ran into an issue that took two hours. people brought out their pitch forks.

It's not a matter of being condescending. it's a matter of pointing out that this horse has been beaten so long it's now tartare. It's been pretty much the same routine since day one...It's Monday (sometimes Tuesday) we'll be patching...it almost always take 2 hours consistently. Every couple of months a bigger patch happens because something more indepth needs to happen. And then sometimes something just goes wrong. Nothing is completely predictable. How many times does a mechanic have to revise a car repair because the more they dig the more problems they find. That's just how life works.
Expecting Zeni to give a play-by-play of each cable change or server reboot is reaching and demanding. And they have no such obligation. It's just another example of the 'I want it now' mentality that's becoming so common.
