Although I won't rule that out, another possibility is that now that orsinium is out people are making all of these new crafted sets. Supply gets low, prices go up

No its the same people sitting in Deshaan throughout the day buying it up at 8 and selling it at 12. It sits in the vendor for 3 or more days atm before a few people give in. Guild traders are crying about a slow market but it's not slow it's just to overpriced. It's currently faster to farm your own kutas and tempers than it is to farm 12k x8 x 2 if you do or are a tank.

    You're both right & wrong!

No economy is as black and white as many people are making out in here... there are a number of influences at play, and anybody who tells you 'This is the only reason for XX inflation/deflation' will almost certainly be missing a part of the puzzle.

YES... there are people flipping items and sellling at a higher price. There always are and always will be. Its a free market and its a legitimate way to make gold.

But what you tend to find is that this is opportunism that stems from a rise in prices from other influences.... price of an item goes up.... the traders will buy the low stuff and flip at the higher/rising price. And YES this often does lead to it going higher than it may have done without this aspect, but it's not just the flippers to blame.

With a trading system like ESO, hundreds of separate traders, hundreds of guilds, thousands of players and only 30 selling slots per person its just not possible for a mass manipulation upwards without other external influences.

The big issue in the game right now in relation to yellow mats is what several people have already mentioned... that there are a large number of factors which have reduced the supply and further factors that have increased demand:

    Supply:
    • Hireling drop rates on yellow mats nerfed significantly
    • The change to top tier crafting writs where they require V16 mats has led to fewer people doing writs. This leads to fewer yellow mats on the market (And also reduction in nirncrux supply... as demonstrated by the increase in Nirn prices since Orsinium).
    • Anecdotally many believe there has been a nerf in refining rates for yellow tempers. This is RNG so hard to pinpoint, but it def feels that way to me too....

    Demand:
    • Two DLC's in relatively quick succession each with new dropped and crafted sets to create.
    • V16 being introduced.
    • New best in slot sets... eg Julianos, Kena, SP Cure, involves most people changing their build and making whole new sets.... using lots and lots of gold tempers.
    • Faster route to V16 since patches, so more V16's and therefore more people crafting gold armor & weapons.

TLDR:.... Economies aren't as simple as being altered solely by one factor... price rises are caused by many including reduced supply, increased demand, and market speculators (The buy low sell high 'flippers').

It's very easy for 3 people to manipulate the entire economy when only 3 locations have legitimate guild traders. And by that I mean if you check all the hotshot traders it's the same 3 people selling all the tempers and kutas. These same individuals go to the small business traders and buy up all the mats every morning and then sit in Deshaan buying in voice chat. So this market you speak of is a text book regurgitation not an actual sense of what's happening on PS4 NA. No attorney centralized guild broker wouldn't fix it but you know what would? A shorter sales duration and higher posting tax. 48 hours with a 15% tax would immediately effect these individuals in a very negative way and trend items back downward creating a buyers market.

There is absolutely nothing preventing a guild right now from visiting all the guild traders to purchase all the tempering alloy or dreugh wax.

    @Zerok

    Skill testing question:

Would that be easier or more difficult with a global auction house?
There is less than 10 key spots to visit to control more than half of the market.

Players with Awesome Guild Store can visit all these spots in less than 1 hour.

Guild traders are a false solution. A real practical solution would be built-in antitrust laws. That's what free markets IRL require to be competitive.

Um no. The materials in question can be collected and farmed from anyone in the game who is willing to run around and harvest nodes. Not to mention, they can also be sold via chat and avoid the trade guilds completely. So get off your anti-trust horse and stop using those ridiculous words in every single post you make.

    Patience.
Everyone should sell his/her tempers now and worry about upgrading your gear in a few months when demand drops down again. Get 10k for them now, buy them for 4-5k next month.
This is short term demand, once gear is upgraded they wont need them anymore.

*sigh* this is something that annoys the heck outta me...

When I was a new player, I found an imperial motif and tried to sell it. I got a whisper from another player asking for it about half of what I was asking. He told me that he had been looking for it for a long time, and really needed it. I was suckered by his sob story and gave it to him for even cheaper than he offered... trying to be a nice guy.

Less than 2 minutes later he was spamming in zone to sell for more than I originally asked -_-

I whispered him again and he said "I said I needed it, I didn't say I was going to use it. I want the money."

Another example is a friend of mine has 10 ESO accounts to have his own guild back.... and the ability to be in 45 other trade guilds. He buys items, stock piles them, and then corners the market in certain areas.

TLDR: There are tons of.... less than savory... people in this game who manipulate players to benefit themselves, it is nothing new, but unfortunately it can't be avoided without rebuilding the market from the ground up.

Price fixing is McDonalds at Disney World where an influencing company says you have to set minimum prices if you want to sell here. (Which is twice as high as they would normally be 5 miles down the road)

A good way to see if it is price fixing or supply and demand is to see how many a store has on hand at a given price. If they set the price to low then they never have any of what you are looking for. If they set it too high there will be tons on hand.

My guess is that you just need to be there at the right time to buy the ones that go for a cheaper price.

To bad Console doesn't have Master Merchant to see where the real line is for average sale price.

There is a small group controlling the market much like would be done with an auction house. The very thing Zenimax wanted to avoid with the trader system. If I had enough gold I'd buy up lots and sell them lower just to disrupt things. it's also being done to raise the price of gold since there are people who make real money based on the value of the in game gold. (Not making this up)

I think it is the Devs tampering with the market. I rarely get Tempering Alloys or Kutas anymore. And, judging by the skyrocketing cost of these items in traders, I would say it evident most others aren't either. Was this their ninja nerf solution for not having stuff to sell because gear sets or BOP, to nerf drop/refine rates so that they are more rare and thus more sellable?! This a sh(poop)y solution to a lack of economy complaint?! Or is it just more horrible RNG in this game?!

Thats not it. When every guild traders prices are pretty much the same something is up. Just 2 weeks ago i was buying gold mats for half the price they are now. And now all of a sudden no one is undercutting 12k for tempering alloy with at least 9k? Nah the markets being manipulated. This isnt my 1st mmo and i know when i go check every guild trader and all their prices match something is up.

But but but Guild Traders is the best thing to ever happen to an MMO and no text chat keeps my eyes from bleeding with all the Trade and Sell spam!

I mean, Guild Traders prevents market manipulation so thats just down right impossible. /s

I rarely get Tempering Alloys or Kutas anymore.

Ye the drop rates for legendary upgrade mats for Wrothgar writs really stink. A Diamond, Grand Repair Kit, and one piece of deconn gear for a writ that takes that amount of materials and max level mats is downright insulting.

Most of my time in ESO is spent harvesting nodes and refining the gathered materials, and I've been doing this since the PC/Mac launch in April 2014 and the console account copy in June 2015.

For what it's worth, I've definitely noticed a trend toward fewer gold items being borne of the refining process, which directly impact their availability on the markets and, therefore, market prices respond by generally trending upward. (Especially with the new armor sets and whatnot, along with VR16 writs.)

I have no proof, but it wouldn't surprise me if Zeni nerfed the drop rates of gold items in order to empty players' inventories of said items that had built up and up for months on end, thus dropping prices accordingly.

In due time, the prices will drop again, though. The whole process is like a circle, really. One just has to endure its ups and downs.
