    Because ESO can be up and running but all content is gated through Sony (PS4) and Microsoft (XBox). If they're doing updates or maintenance and you can't log in, its not Zenimax's fault.

    @ZOS_GinaBruno So you mean to tell me the patch that would improve some of the lag we deal with in cyrodiil that's already out on PC and would also make more players want to complete the vMA isn't coming out again for this week; yet PC will receive another huge patch followed by consoles later on.

    Note: This patch came out for PC either a month or two ago.

    Cyrodiil's as laggy as ever on PC, so I don't know what you are referring to.

"1pm the maintenance will be done.....maybe....." and you guys think that's insightful? Lol. "We're hoping for a pc update Monday and a console update later in the month", yes.....so insightful lol. Brown noses make me laugh.

    heres an extra 2 cents on top of the money im already paying to have the privilege to write on this forum.

    In a day and age when one has unlimited access to social media, silence speaks volumes. Sure we know you can't tweet when you're up as that would let us look back and see how long and often you are down for. Understandable. Whats upsetting is you own and moderate this forum and therefore should be able to keep us better informed daily. "the server will be up in a few hours and in a few hours you will let us know more"? what the hell is that? Here let me call my work and tell them that nonsense. Its insulting to say the least.

    "Hey you got that order filled weve been promising for months?" my boss asks. "Nope. Been really focused on this back end work. Maybe in a few weeks i can give you a better answer then a few weeks"...

    I get what you're saying, but when they take down the servers it's expected that it's going to take a few hours. When it takes a long time, they come here and update when asked like Gina did above. Imagine, if they were to commit to a specific time, and they ran into some issues that extended the downtime...imagine the outcry here on the forums. 'YOU SAID IT WOULD BE UP...UNPROFESSIONAL, UNSUBSCRIBE.' It would be ridiculous. I'm not a dev or anything close to it, but I'm guessing that fiddling with the digital guts is more of an art than a science. For the amount of...strong suggestions...that I see here on the forums about how the devs should do their jobs, I can't say I blame them one bit for not committing to a specific time.

    Ask and you shall receive. The question was asked and they came back with an ETA.

    "A few hours" is reasonable and expected. Half the day, however, is a little much. Also, I'd like to point out that for all the "server maintenance" this game has seen it hasn't helped. Pvp lag and general performance is at an all time worse.

    Considering how much "up time" there is, I really so no reason to be complaining. Hell if it was down a couple days I wouldn't care. I don't even remember the last time the servers were down this long. But after playing 12+ hours a day the last couple weeks over the holidays, I'd say I need some down time and carry my ass back to work! hehe

    Yea, right... ETA unknown... etc.

    Before the live servers even get touched, the entire routine of maintenance, patching, updating, etc... IN ANY DEV SHOP ... is performed on one or more instances of DEV Servers or STAGE servers, or whatchamacallit servers, to TEST the changes before committing them to the LIVE servers!!!

    I would BET that this also happens at the ZEN shop!

    So, there is NO reason they should not have a fairly EXACT knowledge of the time it will take BEFORE hand!
    Only exception MAY be a hardware or OS upgrade...which we were supposed to have had last year...was it November?

    But that is just my opinion, working in an enterprise DEV shop...

    I am really confused by what "take down the servers" means.
    I would assume it's as simple as stopping/starting a service running. Maybe, as simple as doing a reboot of the server. ZOS no longer has servers "they own", they are renting servers in either a co-location or more likely as part of the Amazon Cloud service. So it's not exactly like they are going to have physical access (unless they pay for it from a co-location).

    Typically, the "back-end work" is associated with database tweaks & cleaning to ensure data isn't being lost (especially with junk db's like mongodb & other no-sql db's that delete your data) & some old log files aren't eating up space. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JWaDa8taiIQ

    This could also include updating or patching services the server is running which may have vulnerabilities in their software version.

    Since there isn't any specific detail on what is being done, this is my speculation from working in the industry.

    The big question or point of my confusion, is these things shouldn't take long to complete assuming that checks & balances have been done before hand, as well as a straight forward patching mechanism & scripts to perform the needed tasks.
    Pretty much all of this takes 2 hours maximum (which is the time-frame they allotted to avoid NA & EU being down at the same time), but since it's taken longer; something must have happened.

    Potential happenings are:
    1) code was overwritten that shouldn't have been (this means something needs rolled back)
    2) something was not compatible with the update (something probably needs to be rolled back if it's not an easy fix, this could take longer than expected to figure out)

    I don't know about a couple days but a long maintenance window is no reason to complain.

    I know a lot of downtime usually means software updates- which many times do not always go as planned- along with server replacement, data backup, etc. It seems like every time one of these maintenance sessions goes this long, it never is a good thing and typically means something has gone wrong and they're trying to fix it. Like a couple of times I recall they had to bring servers down again the following day to finish what they had previously started the day before.

    In any case, idle hands are the devils playground, and with the game being down so long players tend to take out their frustrations in the forums.

    Honestly i'd like a pinned topic saying how long each maintenance / downtime will take.

    Like "Today we are doing this, we're hoping to be finished by x PST, x GMT, x othertimezones, but it might stretch for x hours.

    That way i'll know when i can put some hours into to studying, because usually i just sit here waiting. o:)

    @ZOS_GinaBruno Yesterday something was under maintenance which made it impossible to buy one of the 2 special mounts. But i really want the panther... What do? :neutral:

    Add it with the psn users that lost network for the whole day just to be able to game for a couple hours out of 40, yes.....that does add to the frustration, and I know it is no fault of theirs darnit.

    Yeah man, I hear you. My point is that sometimes you go into something expecting one outcome and encounter things that change the course entirely. Not that this is life-threatening like surgery, but it's like when a surgeon goes in to remove a cyst or something expecting the procedure to take 2 hours, then they encounter a colony of tiny aliens living in the body and it takes a few extra hours to get 'em out of there. (being silly for levity, but you get my point) The dev in this thread did the same thing an OR asst would do by popping up saying it's going to take some time. Of course they're not going to say WHY because it would just be more ammo for folks to complain about their wants for the game.

    I suppose if anything, if a problem crops up during routine maintenance you'd expect a proactive tweet or whatever saying "Hey guys, maintenance is taking longer than expected" but IMO the audience they're working for is so critical that it would open up a floodgate of "you can't even get your routine stuff right" (which would be completely unfair given the whole art/science point) and also, they're probably busy trying to handle whatever it is. All of this is working off the assumption that they encountered something unexpected. Anyway. I don't blame them for having to be asked in order to supply info.

    Bottom line - I want to play too, and we will soon! :)

    O_o not trolling. I do sleep, though the time fluctuates. I'd just rather have a long stretch of time where I can't play rather than getting interrupted every night.

    I bought the game for a friend on the last day of sale using boleto, a method available in my country that takes 1-2 days to complete. So she installed this morning and is now waiting, eager to play too (but a bit annoyed already).... Great way to start off :P

    I just wish they would establish a standardized "Maintenance window" like every other 24/7/365 company does. Pick a day, pick a time, come up with a standard duration... and STICK WITH IT!!! I understand the duration can float, no biggie. But why have the window today instead of yesterday? It's frustrating when the outages are unexpected, then last way longer than "normal backend work" should last.
