Let's talk about small scale pvp / the arena

I'm pretty sure this was confirmed to be coming soon in a recent ESO Live and I'm interested in hearing your thoughts / expectations.

Even though some players may not like it I think that PVP is important to the longevity of any MMO. Both PVE and PVP will grow stale over time, but I think
that PVP, due to it's unpredictable nature, will typically have a much greater lifespan in comparison.

For me personally, I really want the arena to be competitive and by competitive I mean E-sports territory. I want this content to bring ESO to the forefront on Twitch and create whole new stream personalities as well as communities dedicated to tourney play, arena theory-crafting, etc. I want this content to become a spectator sport.

Yes, I understand that class balance changes would be necessary, but let's put that to the side for now and talk strictly arena. Templar changes are incoming and (I hope) other classes will be soon to follow.

In my mind the arena would offer two different types of game modes.

1) A ranked version which puts ALL players regardless of level on an even playing field and disregards player gear & passives.

What exactly does this mean?

This means that ZOS would have to implement some kind of system which basically gives the user a separate pre-set character profile when in Ranked arena. This profile, or loadout if that makes it easier to think about, would assign pre-set values such as spell dmg, crit, passives, etc to your character depending on class and whether you are magicka or stamina based.

These profiles / loadouts would have been carefully crafted with balance in mind and enough variety to offer 2 or 3 different playstyles

As an individual you would have a Ranked Arena rating based on Win/Loss. In turn this would allow Ranked arena to be 'matchmade' similar to how group finder finds people for you to play with (but hopefully more effective) by skill rating.

Rewards would be offered in tiers based on rating.

2) The second game mode would be an Unranked arena which would be much more casual and allow players to go in with their current characters. Possibly there could be some kind of flag to enter Unranked arena with the Ranked arena settings for players or teams to practice against other players/teams who have flagged themselves with that setting.

These are just my opinions and I know this is a lot to read, but I really think that if a lot of effort is put into this it would really propel ESO into that tier of MMO's that can be talked about and played competitively for years to come.

In an MMO setting, where player progression is the main purpose of the game, making the player use preset characters for ranked arenas is a bad idea. It completely negates any customization, build synergy, or itemization which provided the incentive to build their character in that direction

Arena as is 1v1 2v2 and 3v3 will never work because this game isnt designed for it, imagine a really good stam dk (or stam blad) doing the one button win (wb leap execute) or whatever the cheesiest combo is that you are using, thats though enough to live through. Now there is 3 dks doing it, youre grp is now dead and if it isnt.. block block vigor vigor , rinse repeat :)

Maybe if thei raise hps to like 130k and you need to actually cordinate somthing to win it might work.

Imho, fix the lag, bugs, exploits, more lag before you decide to release something new. PLEASE k thx

What I would like to see for the small-scale PvP, at least in the first instance, is a proper Live-appropriate (ie, more interesting) version of Colovian Crossing, the battleground that they took to the conventions, set up for 4v4v4 (rather than 3v3v3, since 4 is the standard ESO small group size), using some of the different small-scale game styles that have been hinted at, eg Capture the Flag, King of the Hill, Murderball, etc.

After that, maybe a timed battleground event (say it happens every 10 days) to take over one of the three island forts found in the data files (Balfiera, Topal, and Velothi). The event would last a few hours, or maybe a bit longer, and the winning alliance would receive some sort of game-wide bonus. There would be a number of objectives to complete on the island in addition to capturing the fort, but there would be a population limit to keep it "small-scale". For example, 24 players per alliance on the island at any one time.

I hope they add in Arena's to the game.

I also hope that they add in a 3 faction PVE Arena. Like the one in Imperial City's Arena District. Where you fight against each other as well as PVE Mobs. The objective would be to fight until there's only one faction left and then a really tough boss spawns with drops as rewards. It could go to 3 rounds total where each faction resurrects at the start of each round or until one faction wins two consecutive rounds. This would make things really fun as well as rewarding at the same time.

If they could change the view you had while dead also, to a 45 degree down view to watch the last faction fight the boss would be really cool.

Why would this be an issue for you?

I was not aware of this it sounds very interesting. I actually wouldn't mind a 3 faction PVP type of system.
