But wasn't there a possibility for a paid transfer? Or is it my Teflon memory again? Maybe I remember a temporary paid transfer window? Given the lag for me on NA recently, I would gladly pay for a character/account transfer to EU, provided all current crown purchases would follow as well.

I do play from a European country. I chose the NA from the beginning thanks to a couple of friends I wanted to keep playing with.

it was only possible when they migrated the EU server to EU,. I once or twice been looking for that option after it,. since i am also a european choosing to play with americans/aussies,. but also got friends playing EU,. but after 2000 hours playing i dont wanna restart it all over again on EU,. maybe someday we get a crown option to do so XD

If Zos opened up for an option to do it say max once a year for a price, I'd say they could well find a new source of income, and compared to the work involved, it could prove to be a good deal for them.
