How many of you guys follow builds?

I am wondering how many of you guys follow builds for your characters or just wing it and learn as you go. I currently re rolled a Altmer Sorc and level 30 and I like playing both pve and pvp. I'm not really going into pvp until I get near level 50 though. I check out alot of builds but most are for V16 after everything is leveled up. So as I go along I am trying to piece it together. I like healing and DPS, so I am going with a Dest staff and Resto staff because I like to help out alot in battle as well as deal damage. But I am kinda just checking out new skills that appear and see if they stick or not. I know about the Wards on Resto skills but I haven't unlocked them yet. So am I going about this the right way or does it not really make a differenct until vet levels.

I start with a build then play with it and customize it to my play style. Eventually it's turned into a completely different build. Also my skill set changes from dungeon to dungeon

I think good idea to do while lvling is to unlock and max out as many skills and skill lines as possible, so it doesn't have much meaning to follow some specific builds. But it's good to check them, because it helps a lot to understand the game so you can make proper builds on your own when you lvl up.

So from level 1 through 50 it's best to kinda just level everything up and get a plan together for when Vet level hits? I know I'm not going to use every skill, there are some that I probably won't really have an interest in.
I guess I'm preparing mostly for PVP, so I don't get housed quickly and I can survive for a little while and help out.

While leveling just unlock and level all your skills. You don't really need to use a build until end-game. Just find out what suits you and what skills you like and what synergizes for you. This will give you a better feel and deeper knowledge of your class.

I fins a build I like the look of and make it mine by changing things up with skills that I like. I did however mess up my first char by skipping a lot of content to try and level the skills faster...

Nice, I was using a DK but couldn't bond with the skills and such having to be so close, and I am flying through the levels with this sorc. I haven't delved into crafting yet but I plan too. I'm not going to reroll anymore so this is gonna be my main character. Like the above posters stated, I'm just gonna level everything up and get all the passives needed and see what happens.

My main char is a bit of a mess too. He is a master crafter in every craft except enchanting (getting there tho!). He is lvl 50 in 4 different weapon types (2H, Sword & Shield, Bow & Resto staff). Full guild & Undaunted skill lines.. but very low in the PVP Alliance war skill line.

I tried to follow a build guide with him once to go fully Stamina DK.. but because I couldn't afford/access the armor & jewellry sets required by the build guide.. he ended up with really bad sustain & would die very quickly in PVP. So I did another respec & blurred some of the guidelines & ended up with an OK build with OK damage & OK sustain. Still terrible mobility (apart from crit rush).

Very soon I will have the mats to make my 'end game' VR16 sets.. so I will likely respec yet again!

With my low-level nightblade... I went full stamina & damage build from the get go. She was a bit weak at first but just kept getting stronger. She has very little sustain as the build is geared all towards weapon damage, but being a nightblade, can cloak out of combat to restore resources.

Wing it and learn as I go. I'd rather play as I'd like my character to be rather than play someone else's cookie-cutter min/max build.

I like the wing it and learn as you go approach, up until at least Veteran Rank 1. It can be difficult to determine what build will work best for your play style until you've tried a few things out and have become familiar with enough of the different skills. Trial and error is part of the fun as you get to experience improvement with every little tweak you figure out.

Of course there's lots good to be said about choosing a build and just sticking to it and mastering it as early as you can. There's no right or wrong way really.

    Edit:
Also wanted to say that PvP will likely change the way you look at your build. If you haven't done any or very much PvP yet, once you get more heavily into that you'll learn many new things. End game optimization at V16 for PvP is really rewarding and a lot of fun!

Agreed Caz, at least until everything is leveled up and then look at builds and make your own up depending on your character. Gonna be my plan. I also want to use glyphs and enchant armor too, but I'm still looking into that. And crafting glyphs

Start deconing all the glyphs you pick up. Enchanting takes forever to level.

That's a good idea. I wish I had started leveling up enchanting earlier. Having the right glyphs is important once you decide on your build. And, it can be very profitable to sell them.

Ask a friend to make you about 200 VR9-14 and VR15 Glyphs then deconstruct what he makes. There's your max enchanting right there ;)

Ah, but in order to create you should have some idea of what others are doing to see the current strengths of the game. Just by looking at others builds and making them better, you skip the first few stages of time it would take to theory craft what they already have.

Most people will tell you that they create their builds and are 100% original because it sounds noble. The only thing you need to know about this game is you can play how you want to play, but then you won't be playing to win. Without looking at and building on others work, you will most likely end up with a shoddy build with little use. One person just does have enough time to theory craft/test everything themselves. ESO is different as there are no paid min/maxing sites like noxxic. All the builds come from the community and are an incremental improvement process. We as a community work together to find what works best, and your time would best be spent helping out the effort. There's no need to shun other peoples builds, learn from others, and eventually you'll be experienced enough to make your own improvements.

I can personally vouch that the bolded section is completely and utterly misleading. I've made builds in games that far outclass what people "build off of". Of course that's just me, some people actually need a basic foundation to build from until they get enough experience to make their own build that suits them from scratch but one should never assume that you can only be at your very best if you copy anything from anyone, no matter the reason.

I agree with this, which is why my DK was crap and couldn't really do much PVP wise, PVE I was ok but I noticed with my current Sorc, she has been getting through certain quests easier than when I had my DK only because I have learned a bit more about how to play.
And another thing, this is why I love this game so much, more the people and how the community helps out other players and work together on some things. But I also know that going into PVP right now would be a waste of time for me because I'm not comfortable with my build yet. I would rather wait until I get further on and more confident that I can help out rather than dying all the time. I bought the Imperial City like 3 weeks ago and haven't even gone in yet lol.

Skills they've nerfed or improved always needs to be recalculated in your character. You test a combo of skills which you think they're fine, and if not, you change those skills.

I never checked for builds actually, I think it's too easy, same for add-ons.
