That's funny, because I've done the research. The only reasons ZOS gave was console players having a hard time using a keyboard and reading a text box from their couches. Both reasons being complete BS. So if you would kindly link where you read that it's MS & Sonys fault, I'll believe it.

I think they should have wrote that ZOS decided to remove text chat development after being forced to provide voice chat for Sony and Xbox. I'm not sure if one company pushed and another didn't but the end result is that when they have the 6 to 12+ month delay....once voice chat was confirmed, text chat was out.

I will say having played both PC and Xbox one....voice chat is the best option for a game pad regardless of anyone's preferences and setup. Even on PC using the game pad UI, text chat still requires you to have a mouse so that you can fully use it vs just having to type.

In the end, what exists is best for consoles and what exists is best for PC.
Until consoles have full mouse support, this doesn't make a lot of sense because text chat isn't just typing....it's a whole unique community and a totally different type of communication form that will for sure seperate groups of ppl

That's your experience with text chat, not mine. From my experience with text chat. It brought people together so we could then use voice chat to communicate. Also as I've said before. This isn't a console, pc thing. It's a MMO thing. In a lot of peoples opinions this is NOT what's best for consoles. They may only be peoples opinions but I would say most of them are hardcore mmo players like me who feel It's completely stupid to not have text chat in a mmorpg. Also with every other text chat system I've used on console, there was never any need for a mouse.

We don't want to play the game using kb/mouse. Just need to type. Your making things up because there's zero need for a mouse and text chat would let the people who can't or won't talk be able to communicate with those of us that do. That doesn't separate a community. It brings them together.

In context....if you only want to type then you can already do this on both consoles.

Text chat...in context as on the game screen is not just a box to type.
It has trading, guild, LFG, and other implications which do require a mouse to be used effectively.

It's not a MMO thing....and I agree it's also not a PC vs console thing.
It's a feature to communicate which exists in many other ways on consoles inside and outside the game but as far as my experiences. In order to have text chat on consoles and be able to use it....it requires the ability to scroll, link, whisper, click linked items, sort tabs, etc. based on the controller design and game play assign buttons....you will have to have mouse support. That's the issue with the game pad Ui on PC which is literally the console UI with an enabled text chat box that does support both mouse, keyboard and game pad play simultaneously in the game pad UI

You would need to actually have used it before telling someone else it's their own personal opinion

So you have the website I linked earlier which is a happy median but is on either a device or if on Xbox one....via snap

Also having played both PC and console.... I will say that you are absolutely wrong and that text chat is very much needed on console for MANY reasons. Comunication, grouping, RP, being just a few. And just who the hell are YOU to tell ME what is best for MY play style, regardless of MY prefrence and MY setup? How completely arrogant, and ignorant. Kindly take your anti text chat OPINIONS and you're lame sig link that you shamelessly promote on EVERY. SINGLE. text chat thread, and shove them. Your opinion is just that, an opinion. You do not speak for me or the majority of the community. Why do you think every text thread gets sooo many hits?

I need a mouse to use a keyboard on console??? Lolwut? That is very strange... because I have been using a usb keyboard with my console for years, without a mouse. Sorry but you are wayyy off on this whole topic.

Since you have access....using the PC game pad UI only with a game-pad...

Please explain how you scroll the text chat window

How you link items from inventory into the text chat window

How you click the items linked in the text chat window

How you whisper a player who has whispered you first in the text chat window

How do you sort tabs in the text chat box

How do you switch from one tab to another while actively fighting

This isn't about what I think is best for you. Don't take it personal.
It is about what makes sense for the game design and functionality based on this game pad UI
It's also more about the opportunities that already exist on consoles....some ppl may not want to use those options but they exist. Choice isn't the reason for a design change

Also...it's your opinion that it's needed....it's not absolute as we are playing just fine without it

Honestly, just go and play on PC. Better performance, more features, addons...Massively larger and more active community. Zone chat...The list goes on and on. I gave this game a shot on PS4 for about 3 weeks and was left filled with wtfs. It's horribly implemented on console, and no unified community across the platforms (ala FFXIV and soon DCUO), was a development decision that will collapse the console versions.

Plus, the controller support is exactly the same in PC--with all of the added benefits listed above. The sooner you make the jump, even on a mid range PC, the better it will be.

I am seriously considering it but I've put 6 months into my console characters and it's a little hard to give that up plus I have to buy a new gaming rig. I had a house fire and ended up with a p.o.s PC so until the holidays are over and income tax rolls around, I'm on limited funds and really can't afford the $700 - $800 I need to build a new gaming rig.

I love this game. I truly do. It's the most beautiful, fun mmorpg I've ever played. But some of the decisions ZOS makes leaves me clueless. If I have to give up my characters and switch to pc, I may as well wait for EQ next and hope they know what they are doing with mmo's. If their previous games are any indication, then I'm sure they do.
I want to change the world. I'm just to lazy to do it.

It should be easy, i love that you often use The argument against text chat that people would take to much time typing yet you reccomend them using text messages which takes Even more time, why not just admit zos sid something bad designwise? I dislike how proud zos is and wont admit and fix this problem. I have begged since console beta.. There are NO cons in adding textchat, just pros. The anti textchat arguments doesnt hold up,we just provide feedback and people who payed for this game deserve to be mad about certain things that zos just keps ignoring and Come up with lame excuses

Understand that what works and exists on PC is a direct result of what doesn't exist on PC.
There is no existing player network like consoles with functions, features, apps and social interactions which exist during, inside and outside of games.

I don't believe ZOS has a bad game design as I've been with this since 2013 closed beta.

I believe the game is designed extremely well as regards to social interactions and by platform it offers different experiences as to provide a logic based experienced by platform

It's your opinion that there are no cons.....and that there are only benefits. That's fine
I particularly disagree due to actual experiences with this game and many, many others...specifically on PC and Xbox One

Lastly...for anyone who likes a PC communication experience. The game has been on discount for 3 times since console launch. If you don't have a PC and don't plan to buy one.....SMH if that's the experience you desire. I don't follow the decision not to experience the game on PC if it had what you desire. As such...it's why I moved to Xbox one vs PC and I have a $1400 gaming laptop

With text chat your switching UI's. You either press enter on your kb or whatever your using to type or like someone else said it can be in the options menu to switch back and forth from the game to the text box.

When you switch to tc all the buttons on your controller become available to be used with tc.

What kinda idiot would be trying to fight and text at the same time?

Quit defending ZOS's excuses because it's what you like or your preference. Text chat is a staple of any mmo. It works in every other mmorpg. Why ZOS can't figure this out is beyond me.

I played most of my eso time on PC, i played since beta, played 500+hours on PC. I switched to console becouse none of my friends played the game on PC and i am spending more and more time away from my pc so i got it on xbox one and have been playing since launch, i wont return to pc becouse then all the progress i made would be for Nothing, people shouldnt be forced to go to another version of The game becouse the company decided not to make The game equal to the pc version,But i guwss in the end this is all about money.. It just sucks that they decided to dumb down this version While other console mmos are pretty much equal to their pc version, some Even have crossplatform.

There just isnt a sense of community like there was on PC on console...

Respectfully you either have not used it or do not understand my questions.

Let me ask it this way...

Because the use of text chat using the game pad UI is the exact comparison to consider when looking at having text chat on consoles, I'm asking you to log in on PC. Change your settings to enable the game pad UI.
Now, if not already, plug in your game pad of choice.

Having done this, typing or entering very simple text isn't as problematic. Sure, you can hit enter and type.

This is no different than sending an in game msg tho so why would ZOS create something that would now send a msg to you in game and via console....?

The question comes in when you need to do something other than just type which is where and why I'm asking how you particularly use this. Your comments suggests that I either didn't know how or were making it harder than it needs to be or maybe that I'm unaware of the options it supplies.

    The specific questions are:

-How do you scroll the text box? (What specific game pad buttons do you use to scroll to the top, middle and bottom to read and review prior text in the box)

-How do you switch tabs? (What specific game pad buttons do you use to go from the first tab to any other chat box tabs?)

-How do you link items? (What game pad buttons and menu sequence are you using to link and item into the text chat box?)

-How do you respond to a whisper? (When you recieve a whisper, how do you respond when more than one conversation is going on in the whisper tab or if you don't have them seperated...in the main text chat box?)

-How do you click an item another player has linked in text chat? (What game pad buttons do you use to select and view the soecific linked item?)

Until consoles have full mouse support, this doesn't make a lot of sense because text chat isn't just typing....it's a whole unique community and a totally different type of communication form that will for sure seperate groups of ppl

Also having played both PC and console.... I will say that you are absolutely wrong and that text chat is very much needed on console for MANY reasons. Comunication, grouping, RP, being just a few. And just who the hell are YOU to tell ME what is best for MY play style, regardless of MY prefrence and MY setup.

Choice is the perfect reason for change.

I understand your questions perfectly. I haven't used it on pc because I currently don't have a pc capable of running it. You would know that if you actually read the post in this thread and not just the ones replying to you.

It sounds to me like ZOS has managed to mess up something else that should have been easy. In every other console mmo all the stuff you mentioned is easily done by doing exactly what I said. Sounds like a poorly implemented controller UI to me.
I want to change the world. I'm just to lazy to do it.

As is and as presented with considerations to what ZOS has told us they intend to present....the current designs of communication having text chat boxes on PC and allowing the consoles to use their social offerings for any non-voice chat options on consoles makes perfect sense and is the best situation until a lot is changed. I've not seen ZOS desires to change on this topic

That isn't how it works nor how a developers logic base communication systems.

But what about the people who play the game? It shouldnt always be what zos want or intend,Does customers matter? Zos has changed their mind over different things over the years

Of course the players matter but this isn't a situation where the players are being ignored.
When we tested this in console BETA the player feedback prompted what resulted in radial text chat prompts for consoles.

It may not be exactly what "some" players want or what "certain groups" prefer but we were all given something instead of voice only which was the first presentation.

That's funny. Because I've heard from beta testers in game and here on the forums, ZOS was told, no tc for consoles was a bad idea.

Apparently ZOS thought they knew better and gave us what we have now. From what I've been told and seen for myself, ZOS ignores a lot of things until they are ready to do something about it.

    Interesting perspective

I don't think ZOS can ignore something unless they've asked for feedback and not respond. They definitely haven't ignored this but they have provided lots of feedback (two ESO Live shows worth) with their design plans the presentation they wanted to offer based on requirements outside of their control.

Everyone has their thoughts on design choices tho...just saying it's far from being ignored

As usual, this has become a redundant debate about nothing.

All we can really do with any of this is - Pro tc people list the reasons they want it.
Anti tc people list the reasons they don't. Let ZOS sort it out.

Yea they said what they said in those two ESO live eps. Me and several others have debated over what was said and I still think it's utter BS. Just because they say something doesn't mean we as paying customers can't incite change.
I want to change the world. I'm just to lazy to do it.

Just put in text chat for consoles already. There is absolutely no downside to it and a million upsides..... Don't say that you would have to read all the immature kids posting curse words and acting fools.... ignore options and oh wait, DON'T READ IT! That is about the only downside to it, having to see trolls argue in world chat... still better than NOT having a world chat....

As to us typing using only the controller.... Takes a while, yes.... Does it still work, yes.... Are there several alternatives to using just the controller, yes... Keyboard or second screen app...

    Enough said.

If an alternative to text chat would be considered, it needs to be in game. I'd recommend something like FFXIV's Party Finder. Basically it was an in game ad-board and players could advertise LFG, recruit or look for a guild, sell items and so on. It included options to add a short message, ads were removed after 1 hour, and it was visible across the whole server.

the point is they don't want in game ui text chat so this is an idea instead of that

The idea I suggested is not text chat. It would fill the same role, but in game, and without the need for another device.

You see the importance of communication methods actually being in game is that some one at work but on a third party app cannot actually run a dungeon with a group, buy or sell an item, etc.

witch is why it says in the thread post itself that it would link to your account when you used it and display the current zone your character was in so if your not logged in and you open the app it would just tell you to log in to the game or something did you even read the thread? this way only people in game playing can talk.

It's not the only way. There are arguably better solutions. The idea you've suggested in just your favored one, but just because your favorite it doesn't make it the only way.

Must I say it again? Zenimax has to go through 2 party certifications firstly their own then microsoft/sony certification. Anything outside voice chat most likely WILL NOT MAKE IT TO CONSOLE because of microsoft/sony. Please do your research before posting a question that has been answered MANY times already.

When is it required to have a mouse for a chat? Are you talking to simply click on the chat bar so you can start typing? Lol, several ways around that... One, make it a bound to a button to bring it up... Or put it in the your settings list of somewhere in your character sheet. Or you could even set it up in your emote list so you can access it by by the emote wheel... Very simple...

Also I'm not for getting rid of voice chat, just adding in text chat so we can have both.... PC games don't need voice chat because there are several, several, SEVERAL options available to download for that and all for free...

Voice chat is not the best option, the best option is to be able to choose which option works best for what you're trying to achieve.... If I am in Elden Root trying to sell something with 100 other people talking, no one can hear me talking or they get sick of me saying the same thing over and over....

Also...it's your opinion that it's needed....it's not absolute as we are playing just fine without it

ok let's start with your solution to text chat is typing on a 3rth party site which wouldn't be used.

Please explain how you scroll the text chat window?
Hold down button to be able to scroll with your left thumbsticks, sure would be clunky but it gives options -> bad option beats no option

How you link items from inventory into the text chat window?
easy for xbox you can already do things by pressing y while on an item like help or destroy you could add there set name in chat

How you click the items linked in the text chat window?
same as question one hold down to select a line with right tumbstick and use like a (or a different button doesn't really matter to select)

How you whisper a player who has whispered you first in the text chat window
    /r enuf said'
if you want to start a conversation /wisper -gt player-. GT because player names aren't visable on consoles which is a shame but something for a different conversation

How do you sort tabs in the text chat box?
hold down to get in text chat menu, use bumpers

How do you switch from one tab to another while actively fighting?
this can be a minor issue, but that's why i chose down button because switching views isn't something most players do in combat, at least not me (could be wrong on this one)

you are just stuck in your way of thinking and force your opinion on everyone else. Do i say my solutions are perfect?
no i don't sure at start they will feel clunky. but it gives rise to options and more in game community which are both good things. you should start thinking about what can be done rather about things that can't be done

-No I'm not talking about clicking on the bar to start typing
-there aren't other buttons to bind chat functions to...this was explored in many threads month prior
-A menu option for the chat box...or something similar I agree is a great idea. This was also discussed a lot in another thread months ago but those who desired text chat said that wasn't what they wanted
-emote wheel options don't allow the functionality that a social menu would provide due to a limitation of other buttons and functions that are desired in a chat text box

-It's understood that voice chat and text chat would both be desired...

-Yes I agree PC has many other options but console does too. Maybe not as many as in depth but the third party route that PC goes for voice is a route console could choose for text....but why would you when the console already offer it

-Voice chat is the best for consoles. It may not be the best for everyone on consoles but it's definitely most ideal considering what comes with a console and what's supported without extra purchases.

-Selling something via text chat in zone chat to 100ppl .....I see a lot of concerns to have text chat to trade and sale. To be honest, the commerce system just needs changes. Text chat is by far not the best way and considering you'd want to avoid faction boundaries an in-game commerce option would resolve this without the clutter and standing in town spamming text over and over

The third party website....this isn't my solution. It's someone else's that I'm sharing

Regarding your replies to my questions:
The problem with these is that if you actually go try this on PC right now....these are bound to play your character so you end up needing a mouse to make best use. I'm not asking how you would design it cause as is....you're suggesting that when in text chat, to abandon the game play controls. Why would you want that as it's clunky and far poor of an experience just to communicate. Have you actually logged onto PC to try this out?

You're basically suggesting what Neverwinter did on console. Which is terrible

My solution....is in a locked thread.

Put the text chat in the social menu so it doesn't clutter the screen but so you also don't have to travel to a zone or place and can use the text chat with drop downs, full access to your game pad and inventory....etc

Maybe not what others desire but it's an idea that doesn't take away or cause ppl to have to relearn how to play the game.

But ZOS did not respond other than mediation so it seems they have no interest and later shared that no changes in the decisions have occurred. R

No, you don't so it doesn't clutter the screen. and i want to be able to start communicating in game at all with stranger which is currently lacking. sure i've met a few people in game which i spoke to but i can count them on my hands in almost 6 months. this is the reason ESO doesn't live up to it's potential on console and that is just to bad. i don't prefer to play on PC because i don't like mouse and keyboard and until like 2 month's ago there was no controler support and now im at the point i don't feel like starting over my characters again. If i could take them to pc because i linked my account's (what has 0 benefits at all but hey) i probably would.

this can be a minor issue, but that's why i chose down button because switching views isn't something most players do in combat, at least not me (could be wrong on this one)

you are just stuck in your way of thinking and force your opinion on everyone else. Do i say my solutions are perfect?
no i don't sure at start they will feel clunky. but it gives rise to options and more in game community which are both good things. you should start thinking about what can be done rather about things that can't be done

Text chat is by far not the best way and considering you'd want to avoid faction boundaries an in-game commerce option would resolve this without the clutter and standing in town spamming text over and over
Binding the button to the emote wheel was just a way to bring it up in game without needing to bind it to a specific button such as circle or square. Once you select it, it allows you access to the chat window that you can already see, so you know if you want to reply or not and dont have to stay in your menu to read what people are saying. Yes it would lock you out of your combat and movement controls, but why would you be trying to talk mid-fight anyway? At that point, once you are accessing the chat window, all of your buttons are used for chat specific things. Such as pressing r2 and l2 to switch between tabs, x to begin typing, square to reply to the person who last whispered you and so on.

You can't tell me that when you go to talk on PC that it doesn't lock you out of your combat and movement controls as well considering it is AWSD style movement.... letters which are frequently used in every alphabet. So there is no difference here. Even seeing items linked in the chat window could be done with a cursor or works as the tab button on a keyboard does. You press up or down and it goes to the next linked item or persons name in the list and which point you can press, say circle, to bring up further options just as friend/ignore/whisper. Is it a perfect system? Not by any means, but it is simple and effective and gets the job done.

As to selling in area chat, no it's not the best means to sell, but nor are traders if you need money quick and are trying to get rid of a specific item at a reasonable price.

Voice chat is supported on consoles you're right, but so is a the keyboard. It might take a while to type out what you are trying to say if you are only using the controller, but then again who is to say they have a mic? You can't play a console without a controller, but you can play it without a mic.

Text chat is something that is heavily needed for consoles and all you PC users are taking it for granted...

Also...it's your opinion that it's needed....it's not absolute as we are playing just fine without it

ok let's start with your solution to text chat is typing on a 3rth party site which wouldn't be used.

How do you switch from one tab to another while actively fighting?

do you ever hear a PC player complain about the text chat clutter the screen?

I'm not asking how you would design it cause as is...
    Yes you actually did:
Please explain how you scroll the text chat window, so on with your questions

On PC there are fewer complaints about it because....
    1. Why buy something that has an on screen features you dislike and then expect the company to change something or take you serious
    2. there are many more options to set you UI size and adjust your chat box, resolution, etc.
    3. It's a whole completely different UI, options, settings and interface with 1,000 of different options before even grabbing add-ons.

Because of all of this there are ways not to have clutter but this is in consideration to a community who uses add-ons (not everyone but many) that add a tons more on the screen so it's not likely that people who buy games on a format to add more to the UI would complain about a text box when there is no options to voice chat natively supported by the game but lots of excitement around addons, scrolling text numbers, boss mods, etc.

It's not about starting over on PC. It's about enjoying playing a game you like the way you want to...why even start on console tho

Not sure why you interpret my question to how you would use the game pad UI as a design question.
I'm asking you to log in and tell me how you actually use it...

If you want to see how a proper text chat system works on a console, go download DCUO for the PS4.... or even for the PC since I know you have one of those. Its free, don't worry. The chat system works the same exact way on PS4 as it does on PC, you just have to press a button to enable it and allow your other buttons to now be used for chat specific options. Linking items in chat would still be done the exact same way, through your inventory select menu.

Come to think of it, PC users have no place being in this thread. Its not for them. It concerns console users. Are you trying to discourage the developers from improving console versions? That's what it seems like.

I don't care how they do it, any text chat system is better than none. What about people with speech impediments or are self conscious about their accent that don't like to speak for fear of being made fun of.

Also voice chat isn't a necessity on consoles even though it was required by both manufacturers because both platforms offer a group/party chat system that come stock when you purchase it. Yes you can use this same method to text chat, but you have to keep backing out of the game, or rather leaving the game screen to do so and is very limited.

I've seen DCUO and seen it on PS4.
The game is of no interest to me.

I will say that how the text chat is done there under different circumstances due to cross play and because the game pad controls differ from ESO.
When PC and console are going to play together then it's a completely different methodology ...this isn't ESO
