Yes! Take the boat! That's the quest I'm talking about, and it sounds like your logic for not doing it is the exact same as my logic when i first started playing way back on PC launch day. Take the boat! It will take you to the area that's actually designed to teach you the game.

Edit: more than anything else, this is the advice I wish someone had given me back when I first started playing. It just didn't seem logical to me that you would immediately take a boat to go away from the zone you were in before you went and did everything in that zone.

Yeah, it seemed like a breadcrumb quest to lead me to the next zone. It didn't feel right to leave - I had open ended quests and was working on crafting, and for all I knew this city was the starting area. I guess I go to that island and then return once I'm done?
    Exactly!

This is all the fault of a few vocal idiots during beta. They complained loudly that they started on the starter islands, because they wanted to go right to the main zones. Unfortunately ZOS listened to them, and prior to launch they changed the starting location to the major city of the first main zone. So now the place where you start after the initial tutorial isn't actually the starter zone...

This makes me very happy - not the situation, but that this place exists. I felt a little thrown-into-the-fire, and I'm a veteran MMO player. I'll go do that island first thing. I kind of hope Zenimax sees this thread now.
That's exactly how I felt, and after I found out that I was meant to go off and do the starter islands first, they really helped me to get a better feel for the game. Plus they got me a bunch of gear that helped me out. Many of us have been complaining to ZOS that they should switch it back to starting on the starter islands for a long time though... I don't expect them to suddenly listen now (although I would love to be proven wrong on that).

With the game having been on sale and now buy to play and a free weekend, I would expect to see a large number of new players. It would be helpful to start in the starting area, with a quick 'opt-out' NPC for the veterans. I hate to think how many people might try it and be turned off by the lack of explanation of mechanics. Breaking out of the tomb/prison/whatever was ok for combat, but I really needed help with crafting, UI, factions, etc.

This one must ask on the question of guilds - which server and platform are you on?

Santie is part of a very great and friendly guild that you are more than welcome to become part of (EU, PC).

On the question of game advice this one would offer the following:

The Rosy Lion tavern in Daggerfall does great beer - watch out for the drunk by the door though

Wayrest Castle is a great place from which to liberate unguarded objects - quite close to the Outlaws Refuge too

Pick everything, collect everything and get as much inventory and bank space as you can

Don't try and fight the guards. They are immortal. Might want to also tick the game option so you cannot accidentally hit innocent NPCs - unless you like that sort of thing ...

That's all for now. Early in the morning and Santie has only just got to work.

When you reach lvl 50, do something else before starting Silver/Gold. Go through all 18 zones straight aint an easy job.

So I got accepted to the only guild I applied to, received my invitation, and when I joined, said 'hello' to the guild and nothing... Checked the guild roster thinking maybe no one was on since it was late, there were 20-something people online. Said 'hi' again a bit later, nothing... Played for three hours, not a word in guild chat. I think I'll be finding another guild!

You can join up to 5 guilds :)

Some are soulless places and others are far from it. Sometimes TS3 is used more than guild chat and there are times where during guild events people can struggle to chat in guild while running for their lives with a scroll strapped to their backs and a beacon showing everyone where they are :)

In short, I do not know who you joined but I would give them a fair shot before making a judgement on their activity/friendliness :)

Probably a trade guild, most people tend not to socialize in these types of guilds and only ever talk if theyre looking for a certain item or trying to sell something.

I think it depends on the guild, the time of day and who is on and what they are doing. Every guild has a few people who don't like to talk much.

Worth it to note that even if guild members are showing online in the roster, it doesn't mean they're in guild chat - so maybe you weren't being ignored after all! I'm not sure what keys you need to press on PC to see who's in your active chat (area, group, or guild) but on Xbox if I hit menu then Y, I can see a list who is currently mic'd on the channel. I'm in 5 guilds and almost none of them use guild chat although they're very active in groups. You may want to send a mail/message or group invite to a few guildies requesting help or companionship (whatever your goals are) as that may be the best way to make contact for that particular guild.

    Good luck to you!

Yeah, it's possible some/most/all of them were AFK or otherwise not paying attention to the chat window. I know that when I'm in a group dungeon, or a tough fight, or in a PVP zone I pretty much forget that the chat window even exists. Actually, the same goes for when I'm chatting with guildies on teamspeak - I can only pay attention to so many things at once.

    Thanks folks. I'm on US/DC/PC.

Also, my bags are ALWAYS full. I'm trying to gather and steal as much as I can, and it seems I can't get through ten minutes out in the world without bags getting full. I bought the first bag upgrade, but the next is 2000g. Any other solutions for this?

That's what the "mule alt" mentioned before is about. Just take a few minutes and make another character (good chance to mess around with another role), then park it in front of the bank in the starter town. Buy it 1 bag upgrade, then have it go in to the bank and withdraw stuff you aren't using at the moment to free up bank space.

Yeah, I just made one of these last night. Imagine my disappointment when I found out that bank space was shared between all characters, and that you also couldn't even mail things to yourself. We can transfer items via the shared bank anyway, why not allow mail?

I'm really enjoying the game, but inventory management is incredibly frustrating. Why in the HELL is there no reagent bank? I mean, I really enjoy crafting, but I feel like reagents and materials are just eating up my inventory.
