Welcome. You have many many hours of fun ahead of you. Would need to know what system you're playing on for guild advice. There is a forum for guild recruiting though.

The best way to get to that first 10k for your mount is to learn how to steal. Steal every green, blue, and purple item you can get away with. Sell it all to the fence, unless you get lucky and steal expensive Motif's and Recipes. Those you launder at the fence, and then either use or sell to other players. The fence's are in the Outlaw's Refuge. It's marked on your map.

There are lots of good add-ons in this game, but the single most important one you'll want to get is called Master Merchant. Once you start joining guilds, and eventually trade guilds, it will be your guide for figuring out the worth of items when selling, and whether or not you're getting a good deal when buying things.

    Good luck, and have fun!

The things you want to be doing asap are:
Definitely start researching traits on your armor, as you learn and grow time will pass quickly, you're gonna want to have those timers ticking.

Also as you level, do the normal dungeons. Don't do what I've done and try to do them later, it becomes increasingly difficult to get people to do level things with you if you're max lol

Two solid peices of advice I would've liked to have

Sounds like your off to a great start. Gather/steal everything you can and sell items to the fence to gain in gold. When you get stacks of raw materials(cloth/leather/ore/wood) you can sell those in the zone for pretty good gold. Usually a 100 stack can sell for 1.5k-3k depending on the level.

Welcome to the greatest time suck of your life!

Sounds like you are on the right track. It is elder scrolls, so explore everything. 10K might seem like a lot at first, but you will have that in no time. Few pointers:

-Grab every quest you see, it is ES after all.
-Try to level every skill to at least morph ability. You level skills by having them on your active skill bar when you earn XP. Some people go as far as to have skill bar they switch to whenever turning in quests.
-Save anything that is marked as a material. You might want it someday.
-Do crafting writs and get crafting hirelings. Great way to get mats to use, hoard, or sell.
-Wear at least one piece of each type of armor so you level them all to 50. Heavy armor is the best for any character if you dont have skill points into the passives, once you have enough skill points to start putting into armor, you will want 5 pieces of light armor as a magic based sorc.
-As a magic sorc, you want to prioritize 3 types of weapons. Resto staff, Destro Staff, Dual wield. Destro/resto is a great combo for soloing, Destro/DW is great for straight damage.
-Dont waste your gold. Other than a buying a mount and feeding it once a day, there really is almost nothing to spend money on at low level. Use the gear you find and replace rather than repair. You level so fast that gear becomes obsolete very quickly at low levels.

A few sorc skills of note:
-Crystal frags, morph of crystal shard is a great source of DPS. It will pretty much always be on your main bar.
-Mages Fury (and the morphs) is a great execute. Spam it once your target is below 19% health.
-Lightening splash (liquid lighting) is wonderful AoE. Drop it on top of any mob you come across.
-Lightening Form (boundless storm) is 3 skills in one (speed, offense, and defense), keep it up once you get it.
-Surge (power surge), is amazing. It boosts damage and heals you. Unless running a potion build with a dedicated healer, keep up at all times.
-Overload is definitely your best ultimate. It gives you a third skill bar and your light attacks absolutely wreck things.

Destro staff will be your main spam skills. Force Shock (and morphs) are your main single target spam ability and Impulse is your main AoE ability. The both proc your cyrstal frags. Keep a few destro skills on your bar to level it faster.

Lastly, since you are PC, there are a few addons that I think are really nice.
-Get both the skyshards (skill points) and lorebook (mages guild rank) addons. You dont want to miss any.
-Foundry Tactical Combat (FTC) to track damage. You need to see what kind of damage you are doing if you want to increase it.
-Dressing Room. Great addon for swapping skill bars. I also use to have a quest turn in bar.
-Advanced filter. Makes your inventory easier to manage.
-Master Merchant. Lets you see what items are selling for in guild traders.
-Awesome Guild Store. Not important early on, but does make shopping much easier.
-Mobile Bank Extended. Again, not in beginning, but once you have Alts or Mules, you can view all inventory without logging.

Okay, should probably get back to work...

Oh how I wish someone would have told me this sooner! Definitely research everything if you're interested in crafting. There are some really helpful apps out there (Android: ESO Hireling and Apple: Workbench) that you can use to track trait research at a glance. Helpful when you start blowing through items to deconstruct so you don't have to flip back and forth between your research screen and decon screen.

Also, get persuade and intimidate skills when you can comfortably spend the skillpoints as they'll aid you in some quests. In that same vein, set yourself up with craft hirelings as soon as possible and start stockpiling. Many people create a "mule" character to hold their materials. (You can use the bank to port items to the mule. Deposit in the bank, log into your "mule" character and withdraw into the mule's inventory)

If you're into achievements, when doing delves, don't exit until you've both defeated the boss (achievement) and have found the skyshard. Now that I'm skyshard hunting it's super annoying to have to revisit delves I've already defeated.

    Have a great time!

Explore! It's very easy to overlook areas and they normally have something of use there exp wise, and hey the scenery's good so why not.

Consider a mule alt to dump your stuff onto, or start upgrading your bag as you go along- I say once every 10 levels is enough, as long as you make sure you have a bank to drop the stuff you don't need to carry into.

Steal gather and farm, because we all need gold.

Craft early on, and try to do writs daily. Don't forget to decon and research items. Oh and even if you don't really read them, click through all/as many bookshelves as you can.

If you havent settled on your build type for definite just yet, begin to think about what route you're gonna take. Just having a general idea of what you want is a neat way to keep on track. But that being said, don't be afraid to switch over or experiment as you go- have fun with it! I frequently level a resto staff on my characters as its just helpful to be able to wield if needed.

On that note, consider how you're going to place skill and character points, and possibly your armor build, unless you're going to mix and match (as I sometimes do on my own).

Teamwork is cool. If you need help with a particular boss or dolmen or dungeon, don't be afraid to ask for help. :)

This video is also pretty handy.

I would not worry about builds or set armors in the first levels, when you reach veteran rank, then I would google more about it or talk to very experienced players who surely can advice you. I was playing my character until vet rank 2 with noob build, no set armor and attribute points with no knowledge what are the best ways to play this game. But then I talked to one of my very experienced guild mate, he explained me a lot and fortunatelly there is a way (for in-game gold) to reset all your skills, attribute points and respecify them. Also he crafted me set armors to maximize my stats even more.

Even if there are some bugs and in PVP lags (when too many players are online in the area in the campaign, I love this game. And I am sure you would love it too! there are hours and hours of great game experience ahead of you!
    enjoy!! :)

I don't know how to start doing this. I saw where I can start researching, but everything is locked. Do I need to be a certain level?

Also, my bags are ALWAYS full. I'm trying to gather and steal as much as I can, and it seems I can't get through ten minutes out in the world without bags getting full. I bought the first bag upgrade, but the next is 2000g. Any other solutions for this?

No, but you need to have an item with the trait that you want to research. So if you find a sword with the Training trait, you can then go and research Training on a sword (which destroys the sword).

It won't take you that much time to be able to afford the next bag upgrade. Aside from that, once you have a mount (which is more expensive at 10K, or which you can buy with crowns) you can train your riding skill at a stable for capacity. Each time you train (you can only do this once every 20 hours - or you can buy riding lessons from the crown store, which lets you use as many as you buy right away) you gain a 1 point increase in your bag space, up to a maximum of training 60 times.

You find a sword that has "training" as its trait.

    You go to blacksmith station

    Select research

    Go to weapons

Go to swords (one handed in this example)

Go to the trait that's in white text, "training" for this example

Select it, it will show you the sword and ask you if its ok to destroy it. You say its ok and then the timer starts.

Then you wait till its done and do another :)

Edit: there is no specific order in which you have to research traits, so any of the 9 traits can be your first to research, the "training" trait is just an example

Edit edit: though there is no specific order the best traits are divines and infused, try and research these as early, you'll want them available once you start crafting armors.

Yeah, Training was just an example. Any weapon or piece of armour that you find with a trait on it can be researched (except for Ornate or Intricate - those traits are for dropped items only), but definitely take stock of what traits you've got before deconstructing things.

Without having spent any skill points on passives (which probably aren't unlocked for you yet anyway, because they become available as your crafting skills level up) you'll only be able to research 1 trait at a time for each of the craft skills, so if you've got, for example, 3 swords with traits - one Training, one Infused, and one Sharpened, put some thought into which of those 3 traits is most useful to you, and prioritize your research.

Also, the first trait that you research on each item takes the least time. The second trait is double the time, the third is double that, and so on. Because of that, you probably want to research 1 trait on each blacksmithing item before moving on to researching second traits on items, and the same for clothing and woodworking. That way you'll at least be able to craft something with a trait for each item fairly quickly, rather than finding that it's taking you 2 weeks to research a trait on a sword, while you don't know any traits on any heavy armour pieces.

Yes! Take the boat! That's the quest I'm talking about, and it sounds like your logic for not doing it is the exact same as my logic when i first started playing way back on PC launch day. Take the boat! It will take you to the area that's actually designed to teach you the game.

    Exactly!

This is all the fault of a few vocal idiots during beta. They complained loudly that they started on the starter islands, because they wanted to go right to the main zones. Unfortunately ZOS listened to them, and prior to launch they changed the starting location to the major city of the first main zone. So now the place where you start after the initial tutorial isn't actually the starter zone...

Have to agree, the starter islands are great for running around and getting used to the game. Plus they're all rather lovely to look at :)

Yes! Take the boat! That's the quest I'm talking about, and it sounds like your logic for not doing it is the exact same as my logic when i first started playing way back on PC launch day. Take the boat! It will take you to the area that's actually designed to teach you the game.

Edit: more than anything else, this is the advice I wish someone had given me back when I first started playing. It just didn't seem logical to me that you would immediately take a boat to go away from the zone you were in before you went and did everything in that zone.

Yeah, it seemed like a breadcrumb quest to lead me to the next zone. It didn't feel right to leave - I had open ended quests and was working on crafting, and for all I knew this city was the starting area. I guess I go to that island and then return once I'm done?

This makes me very happy - not the situation, but that this place exists. I felt a little thrown-into-the-fire, and I'm a veteran MMO player. I'll go do that island first thing. I kind of hope Zenimax sees this thread now. There's a lot that's different about ESO vs other MMOs and I like it. Just need a bit more learning about how the systems function.
