If you haven't already done the starter islands make sure that you do them before you progress too far! The quest giver to send you there is right across the street from the house you first woke up in in Daggerfall (it's close to the gate leading out of town and to docks on the side of town where the bank can be found).Check out the starter islands.

No, but you need to have an item with the trait that you want to research. So if you find a sword with the Training trait, you can then go and research Training on a sword (which destroys the sword).I don't know how to start doing this. I saw where I can start researching, but everything is locked. Do I need to be a certain level?
It won't take you that much time to be able to afford the next bag upgrade. Aside from that, once you have a mount (which is more expensive at 10K, or which you can buy with crowns) you can train your riding skill at a stable for capacity. Each time you train (you can only do this once every 20 hours - or you can buy riding lessons from the crown store, which lets you use as many as you buy right away) you gain a 1 point increase in your bag space, up to a maximum of training 60 times. Also, my bags are ALWAYS full. I'm trying to gather and steal as much as I can, and it seems I can't get through ten minutes out in the world without bags getting full. I bought the first bag upgrade, but the next is 2000g. Any other solutions for this?

Everyone has given good advice so far, but most especially this:If you haven't already done the starter islands make sure that you do them before you progress too far! The quests on the starter islands are designed to give you a good introduction into how the game works, with some common quest mechanics (like using disguises), the islands themselves are beautifully done (especially Stros M'Kai), the quests foreshadow a lot of the alliance questlines to come (some of which don't make that much sense if you haven't done the quests on the starter islands), there are some great characters that you meet there (some of whom you'll meet again later on), and there are some sky shards to be found there too.

Ok. I don't think I've found anything that had a training trait on it. Still not quite sure how it works, but I'll figure it out and try to research before deconstructing things.
Yeah, Training was just an example. Any weapon or piece of armour that you find with a trait on it can be researched (except for Ornate or Intricate - those traits are for dropped items only), but definitely take stock of what traits you've got before deconstructing things. No, but you need to have an item with the trait that you want to research. You find a sword that has "training" as its trait.
You go to blacksmith station
Select research
Go to weapons
Go to swords (one handed in this example)
Go to the trait that's in white text, "training" for this example
Select it, it will show you the sword and ask you if its ok to destroy it. You say its ok and then the timer starts.
Then you wait till its done and do another
Edit: there is no specific order in which you have to research traits, so any of the 9 traits can be your first to research, the "training" trait is just an example
Yes! Take the boat! That's the quest I'm talking about, and it sounds like your logic for not doing it is the exact same as my logic when i first started playing way back on PC launch day. Take the boat! It will take you to the area that's actually designed to teach you the game.Everyone has given good advice so far, but most especially this:If you haven't already done the starter islands make sure that you do them before you progress too far! I'll look for these tonight when I play. I am not sure where they are (the entire world to me right now is the starting city and surrounding fields), but there was a boat quest that threatened to take me out of the zone, so I declined because I wanted to stay and quest. Should I take that boat?

Edit: more than anything else, this is the advice I wish someone had given me back when I first started playing. It just didn't seem logical to me that you would immediately take a boat to go away from the zone you were in before you went and did everything in that zone.

Yeah, it seemed like a breadcrumb quest to lead me to the next zone. It didn't feel right to leave - I had open ended quests and was working on crafting, and for all I knew this city was the starting area. I guess I go to that island and then return once I'm done?

This is all the fault of a few vocal idiots during beta. They complained loudly that they started on the starter islands, because they wanted to go right to the main zones. Unfortunately ZOS listened to them, and prior to launch they changed the starting location to the major city of the first main zone. So now the place where you start after the initial tutorial isn't actually the starter zone...
