Enhanced their character creator post launch. I know EVE added a character creation later but I've noticed how lacking other MMO's character creator tend to be, especially older ones. I know many of us hope ZOS will add additional options in their character creation with the release of the barber shop (SOON tm ) and I was just curious if any MMO has ever done anything like this in the past.

Yes, EQ2 and others. But I don't see what is wrong with ESO's currently. It has a lot of options.

Yes alot of mmo's have updated their character creation options post launch usually when major overhalls of the game itself happens. Eso doesn't need this atm what it does need is vanity options like character customisation and new hairstyles to be added to the crown store (for reasonable prices).

WoW has done several overhauls for example, but as many reviewers have commented, eso's character creation is the most in depth of any MMO to date.

so WOW used to be MORE limited than it is NOW? yikes... I mean it seems completely archaic now.

I'd go back as far as 2010. Eve went to their PTS with this in October 2010

I was looking at EQ2's character creation and it looked like the visuals of the character creation (icons, menus) changed but not the options. You couldn't create a more detailed character after the change. Am I wrong about this?

Added more options to use? Definitely! (usually once they have a recustomization feature for those games that started without))

Why do people keep talking about the barbour shop as if its a must have?

Noone can see your charactrer anyway, can you recognise any of your mates from their Avatar alone?

Maybe the armour or the colours of the armour, but not the face.

Mostly @TheShadowScout, I'm thinking things like greater slider options

    and more sliders in general!

    like more race-specific options

    Advanced Khajiit Pack
This pack would include additional sliders for Khajiit characters only available to those who purchased this pack.
    • Digitigrade or Plantigrade feet selector: Digitigrade feet would ‘hide’ any footware.
    • Tail length slider: Allows players to have shorter tails all the way to no tail at all.
    • Snout Slider: Allows players to have a shorter snout all the way to no snout at all (like the face of Men & Mer)
    • Tail adornment: Allows players to add adornments to their tails, from tufts of fur on the end to piercings to large rings that go all the way around the tail. This pack should include a small selection for the player.
    • Ear Placement Slider: Allows Players to move a Khajiit’s ears down the skull all the way to the side of their head (like the ears of Men & Mer)
    • More fur/skin options: Allows players to choose skins with very little fur to skins with no fur at all.

    Advanced Argonian Pack
This pack would include additional sliders for Argonian characters only available to those who purchased this pack.
    • Tail adornment: Allows players to add adornments to their tails, from spikes to piercings to large rings that go all the way around the tail. This pack should include a small selection for the player.
    • Tail Type slider: Allows players to choose between different types of tails, from smooth wispy tails to flat tadpole-like tails to thick crocodile type tails.
    • More scale options: Allows players to choose a wider variety of scale patterns.
    http://forums.elderscrollsonline.com/en/discussion/155307/monetization-of-character-creation-concept/p1

Or multiple adornments. My Redguard has an eyepatch (don't ask... he's kind of sensitive about it) but since he is now the savior of Tamriel, he's thinking about growing a beard. Well, he will have to remove his eyepatch to "grow" a beard once the barbershop comes out. That's just wrong, man!

Facial Scars and Facial tattoos/paint should be separated.

I would personally prefer that each region of the body be separated
    • head
    • torso
    • left arm
    • right arm
    • left leg
    • right leg

and each of those zones should include
    • blemishes
    • scars
    • tattoos

Orcs should have separate tooth options.

Adornments should really be removed and added again with Jewelry crafting. Head pieces, piercings, necklaces, wrist cuffs, arm bangles, angle cuffs, tooth rings for Orcs, tail cuffs for Khajiit, tail piercings for Argonians.

And then we have makeup and face paint, which should be separate from tattoos.

These kind of options are what I mean by "enhancements".

I love the BASE character generation for this game and I adore the overall art style. It was in the fine tuning of customization via makeup, hair styles, adornments/jewelry, scars and tats that they really fell down in my opinion. It was like they baked this incredible gourmet cake with expensive ingredients... and then put cheap frosting out of a can on it. I hope that changes. I really, REALLY hope that changes!

The thing with ESO is that it teases with a lot of variants just like the standard Elder Scrolls game but to make a char that truly looks unique and yet is not ugly as sin is very hard, takes a lot of time you probably are going to end up as something similar to each other.
GW2 char generator is quite broad and there you can create some really fine examples of both female and male characters but then again the whole art style and the engine are completely different.
The most detailed char gen I have seen and tried to date was on Black Desert online, that has literally thousands of options and really you could sink in hours into designing a char, but for me and for quite a few players its far too complicated, too many things to change to modify.

For ESO I think that they walked a fine line between functionality and ease of use, they could use with more hairstyles for both male and female chars, slightly increased colour palette but otherwise I think its fine.

I'm just glad someone brought up EVE's character creator... I mean, ok, ESO's isn't bad... but saying it's the best? Lol, EVE steamrolls any character creator out there.

And it's funny because you barely see your own character in the game :P

Agreed. The basic system is fine and well balanced between lots-of-customizations and not-too-much-complexity (perhaps some splitting of sliders to have beards and eyeparches, scars and makeup, etc.), what we need is adding way more options to a few of the sliders (the ones for makeup, hairstyles, adornments and such) and more color options. To be purchased in the crown store.

Maaaybe also redo some sliders from "slider" to "select from list" format, so you don't have to cycle through too many options to pick the "nightflower" makeup or "dreadlocks" hairstyle you want... it would be -exactly- the sliders we want to split, so a bigger redo might be done if anything is done. And remembering the option name to find it again in a list is much easier then going with "somewhere around the ¼ mark on the slider" when the options start to increase... which they hopefully will...

City of Heroes had a character creator that you could fiddle around in for hours. The design options were unbelievably broad. Even though the game has shut down, there's still a community around for it and a revival of the character creator was one of the first things that was hacked back into service.

ESO would need to increase its choices by somewhere around a millionfold to even come close to what CoH offered.

It really did. I didn't end up caring for the game itself but I had a ball playing in the character generator. And I've yet to see anything as lovely as what EVE came up with.

If they DO put this kind of stuff in the crown store though it needs to be an account wide unlock, NOT per character.

City of Heroes didn't have the same level of detail as other games, as I remember it there was no way to customise your eye shape, lip size etc. but I think it definitely wins in terms of the range of options.

I was impressed as soon as I managed to make a gigantic, hot-pink lizard, which was the first thing I did in that game. Not because I wanted to play as one, but just because I'd never been able to do that in a game before (or since). Especially because this didn't start with me choosing the giant lizard race, I started with a human(oid) and just kept changing options until I ended up with that.

A friend of mine managed to make a whole load of crazy characters from a text-based free form role-playing community we were both part of, including her fairy in hiking boots and my human/elf/cat/bat hybrid.

To me that kind of thing is much more interesting that a slightly increased range of heights or hair colours.

The thing that struck me about AoC (I've been trying other MMOs since I started ESO to see how they are) was the underwater swimming at the VERY beginning of the game and the fact that armor and clothes are ON the character and not body replacements. It really made those two things even more lacking in ESO for me. Their omission is so hard to ignore now.

Maybe not in the short term but ESO will have to do something if they want to stay competitive with all these MMOs coming out. I could see something coming down the pipes in 2018.

Mostly though I just want better Khajiit options. 16 furstocks, like 8 bipedal in the normal height range, and we get the option of playing 1 type of Khajiit. For shame ZOS, for shame!
