Maintenance for the week of April 6:
• PC/Mac: No maintenance – April 6

Zenimax, please give us your official statement on the matter

I am 100% deaf in my right ear with bad hearing in my left and even I understand the reason why ZOS chose not to have text chat on consoles. Some examples could be having to spend more money to hire employees to monitor chat from spammmers and gold sellers on a free game. It is like no one has seen a f2p games chat box before lol.

People need to move on already and stop posting this same topic on the forum. ZOS has more pressing matters to attend to. If you can't deal with it (even if you have perfect hearing) then go play the PC version ffs.

So @ZOS_GinaBruno @ZOS_KaiSchober @ZOS_RichLambert or anyone from Zenimax for that matter what's the official word here? Is it possible? Is it not possible? Is bread conspiring with pie?

This was addressed many many months ago in two different ESO Live episodes in my signature and months later in the ESO Live chat by Jessica Folsom..... please check out the two ESO Live episodes to gather the full context of why this feature was removed by ZOS during development and why they do not want to provide this for consoles.
ESO Live 4-24-15, ESO Live 6-4-15

September ESO Live in chat was written "ZOS_Jessica_Folsom: For those asking about text chat on console, we do see all the requests for it (on our forums, social media channels, reddit, etc.), but we don't have anything new to share about the topic."

Hahahahaha. Thats what you get for playing a pc game on console.

Yeah it is not like Neverwinter "That is ran by a start up company like Cryptic Studios" was able to throw text chat to console port.

Anyways.. It may shock you, but Text Chat WAS intended to be in the game..

It may also shock you to know that Text Chat is ALLREADY imbedded inside the console files!! It is just not enabled at this time. So take from that what you will...

But if ESO is actually running live servers in a year from now I promise you it will have Text Chat. This games community is shrinking and without a working group finder and then add in no text chat system ESO will not survive.

No MMO would be able to survive such an environment.

PS: A group of us ran a few test months ago and if you actually plug a keyboard into the USB slot on your Xbox and then start up ESO at least 2 out of 20 starts will prompt this Error code on your screen.

    ^^^^FACT

The part of your statement that is not "FACTS" is the population decreasing. Go to Xbox one and check out the campaigns. Azuras full. BwB full, Haderus, and the others half atleast half of 2/3 alliances on. Whoever says the population on consoles are decreasing are dilusional . Just because it's not like it was on launch doesn't mean anything. No game keeps all its players from launch. Every faction I play in everywhere is PACKED

No, why would I want to have a keyboard on my lap on the couch. If you want use a desk then play the PC version.

they do have a text chat pad u can put on your controller so you don't require a keyboard.... atleast on the xbox one :)

Obvious troll is obvious, I play eso on my pc in the living room, right next to it is my ps4, I sit in the same position and use a controller for both, or is it too hard to fathom the idea of a keyboard just sitting to the side for when you need it?

Yea, you are right; you are a obvious troll. Some of us are sitting in a reclining chair so then what?

What do you mean so then what? Your supposed to put a hole in the top center of your keyboard, put a string through it, and tie it on your neck so you can have UBER AWESOME TEXT SUPPORT . Then all the people who wouldn't normally talk on the mic can brag and make snobby little remarks behind their keyboard necklace. Lmao. Im against it. The community is great because of no text support.

The fact there is no text chat on console is ridiculous and is the main reason I plan on canceling my sub and leaving this otherwise great game very soon. My main is vet 16 and I've only two zones left before I complete gold. I am growing very tired of questing.

Most of my friends have already left the game because of the lack of BASIC mmo features such as DPS meters/numbers and text chat. The few that remain don't play much and are no where near my level. I love the game and would glady keep playing (and paying a sub!) If I could find people to play with. I just want to do dungeons, trials, dsa, daily pledges....

I refuse to stand in a public place spamming on voice for a group, and your group finder SUCKS. Not to mention that there isn't even the option to use your terrible group finder for things like trials and dsa... Please ZOS, get your head out of your arse. Before it's too late. WE. NEED. TEXT. CHAT.

Here's another one who is going to quit the game because one feature he wants isn't in it. I always say "If you are so fast to quit because of THAT you obviously don't like the game that much because plenty of people play it and love it the way it is" but then comes a bunch of hate and comments like "it's for selling and grouping!" (Which I do fine without text chat, legit anything I want to do I can find a group for in 5 mins or less) or "I want to play my way!" Which I would respond go play on PC then or farewell :)

Just so you know, the text chat on PC/Mac is pretty awful. It's not designed to allow you to hold multiple conversations and multitask while actually adventuring. Heck, you can't even FISH and utilize text chat worth a damn, because you'll end up with a fish on your hook while typing, and have to try and rush back to the combat screen so you can reel it in before it gets off your hook! Really really bad text chat design in this game, PERIOD.

I can see why you want it, and don't blame you. Just don't be expecting much when you finally do get it.

    Just saying...

New forum account , I've been lurking for the past year lmao and finally stopped being lazy and asked customer support for my invitation code. lol I was worried I was posting too much but it's so hard not to when there's so many QQ posts and when I'm bored at work I love to debate certain issues of the game because in reality there's two sides of a debate and I enjoy hearing them

Id cancel it now before you disappoint yourself. They would have said it on ESO live. They are not gonna implement it for the same reason we have all been saying. It's a PC element . If you want it then play on PC. I played both and I prefer consoles voice chat over text chat. You put in text chat and it will feel like a PC port rather then a next gen mmo

There are logging programs that can detect spam, profanity, and gold selling so they wouldn't really need to hire more people other than a couple of mods to sort through what was detected and hand out penalties. In fact, this sort of filtering is something that voice chat lacks and is a great advantage of text

No text chat. It's bad enough that I have to listen to people banging their buttons (whoa, that sounded bad) while playing because they bought a high-end headset and want me to hear everything. I can here your dog [snip]ting in the back yard. Now I have to listen to you clumsily take a minute and a half to type out "Zifkin swords moteef for sales"?

Nope. No text on console. Just talk to people. Use your mouth. And maybe even your brain (depending on what's floating around in there).

From another post but it's just as relevant here. And I'm curious Justice. If your hearing is as truly bad as you say it is. How do you communicate at all? I have relatives with hearing problems and there's no way they can communicate with voice chat and that's with hearing aids in their ears.

Voice chat is great for small groups or in groups of friends but anything beyond that is utter chaos. It's a complete mess with no moderation at all. Voice chat can't and never will be able to speak for the people with disabilities or the socially awkward shy people.

Though I'm just going over the same stuff that has been said many times before because some people still fail to realize that when playing this type of game with this many people, text chat is a must. Before anyone starts spouting "Well you can do this or that or whatever." instead of an in game text chat. It's ridiculous for any company to make their customers find a way to make things work.

Text chat is a much simpler way to start conversations and getting to know people before you talk to them. Unless your an overbearing meathead or an attention starved bimbo, you don't just walk up to people on the streets and start talking to them. To me area voice chat has no civility. It's just a bunch of egotistical airheads trying to be more audacious than the next person. Yes I have ran into and had some good conversations, but they are few and far between.

Text chat reaches a bigger audience, so lfg, buying, selling, and trading becomes a little easier.
Text chat is easily moderated and botted for profanity and spam.
Text chat can translate simple, common game phrases or a lot more depending on how robust the system is.
A text box can be resized to the users preference. Even completely off if you don't want it.
TEXT CHAT GIVES A VOICE TO THE VOICELESS. Sorry for the caps. Just thought this was the most important point.

There's a couple things I'm missing and I'm sure someone will criticize me for a part or all of this post. I don't care. At this point I say if your still against text chat being implemented. Your either only thinking about yourself and what you want or you absolutely love this grand social experiment ZOS is pulling on us.

Edit: I almost forgot. Text chat isn't a PC thing. It's a MMO thing.

    ^this.

Text chat hurts no one and benefits anyone willing to use it. Don't want to use it, toggle it off. The only reason people are against this is because they love to argue or they literally don't understand how we proposed or be implemented and that, again, it won't negativity effect their game.

Why would you use text chat to find a group when there is a GROUP FINDER that works perfectly and can match you with a group in 2 minutes? And no it does not making selling buying and trading easier , I played on PC and stood in zones saying "LF Healer" or something for like 2 hours before they fixed the Lfg tool so especially now that is pointless. I was at a cyrodiil transus shrine and went into area chat and asked "anyone got a 2h or DW I can buy" and right away had 2 people come trade with me. I don't know where all these ideas come from that text chat is going to make the game better or easier . It's just not true. It wasn't used much on PC and sure as hell won't be a social aspect on console considering you have to either A keep a keyboard next to you or B take 5 minutes to type a sentence with the on screen keyboard . all you pro text chatters pull things out of thin air and believe it so much . I kind of hope it comes out so you can all see how un needed it is

    ^this.

Text chat hurts no one and benefits anyone willing to use it. Don't want to use it, toggle it off. The only reason people are against this is because they love to argue or they literally don't understand how we proposed or be implemented and that, again, it won't negativity effect their game.

These are good points but its like buying a product knowing it doesn't fit or offer the features someone needs.

Companies make things for certain types of customers...its not their responsibility to make products for everyone. If I buy something that is missing feature or item that I "need" then its best that I return it or research beforehand.

I may come off as heartless or rude but the reality is, this feature was very clearly stated as not being on consoles prior to release so even for those who pre-ordred, they had ample time (over 45 days) to cancel.

I don't follow the logic of this game should have "XYZ" when a developer goes public sharing it wont and why before release.

I thought group finder was just for dungeons. Can the group finder get you into a Wrothgar dailies group or another type of random over world group?[/quote]

Check for yourself ;) and there are some things it doesn't do. But like I said if there's people in the area just go into area chat. If there's no one in the area then text chat isn't going to help you out even if you do /yell /zone or whatever. I've never had an issue finding a group with voice chat and every time I do find one I always ask myself "and why do the forum people want text chat so bad that was so easy" but if I ever find myself in a position where I think I could of used text chat I'll let you know , but don't hold you breath I've been playing for a while now and haven't had that happen once

It was not clearly stated. Do you think if they put on the box ( voice chat only, no pesky text chat, no pesky numbers such as XP gain or damage, gamer tag names displayed, etc etc etc) that a MMO gamer would pick this up?

For the average gamer (one that picks up the game at their local store or online), very few will research every aspect of the game prior to ordering it. Most people pick it up and play it. The draw for ESO is the fact that it is elder scrolls and an MMO. Delving further, anyone that has played an MMO expect certain common elements that should exist in all MMOs regardless of platform. Many people including myself were blind sighted by the lack of text chat (among other things). I suppose new players used to the single player genre and haven't touched an MMO wouldn't know the difference and are blissfully unaware

No, why would I want to have a keyboard on my lap on the couch. If you want use a desk then play the PC version.

Obvious troll is obvious, I play eso on my pc in the living room, right next to it is my ps4, I sit in the same position and use a controller for both, or is it too hard to fathom the idea of a keyboard just sitting to the side for when you need it?

Not a troll. He is right. If you want text support then play the PC version. This is the console version

so you had 3 ps 4s that's kinda a waste tbh just cus you had 3 of them it still counts as 1 console and xbox is ur second one haha

p.s. neverwinter is an mmo so id warframe ;) and both have text chat and voice ;)
not to mention the fact that there is the companion app for swift typing of messages that doesn't cost a dime and I don't know anyone who don't have a smart phone anymore

The game's central concept of "PvP in PvP areas and be safe in safe areas" needs to stay the way it is.

I never played never winter so I wouldn't know. Only played war frame on the ps4 and I didn't like it. And about me owning 3 ps4s I didn't buy 3 at a time I kept selling it when I needed the money and selling it back. And what do you mean that only counts as 2 consoles? How many are there? If you mean last gen , then yeah who hasn't owned a 360 or PS3? I don't get why that has anything to do with it. And a phone app is not logical. I don't even like using my phone to find sky shards never mind using it constantly to talk to each other

THIS...Exactly what I've been saying. Text implementation would likely leave a lot of people sorely disappointed. And it will be for all the reasons why ZOS doesn't want to start working on it.
