SLI terrible framerates with 2x GeForce GTX 980 / i7 / etc

Hi,

I am experiencing terribly low framerates with a strong gaming PC. I have disabled all the addons to see if that caused the lag or low framerates but that was not the case. (so they are back enabled)

My specs are the following :
- i7 4790 processor
- 32GB corsair dominator RAM
- 2x EVGA GTX 980 - 4GB in SLI
- Samsung 850 pro SSD
- Windows 8.1 64bit
- 1200W PSU
- MSI z97 gaming AC9 MOBO
- The PC is watercooled and temps are not raising above 50 degrees celcius ever

I have tested with GPU-Z and other hardware monitoring programs what the load, temperature etc is on both GPU's and noticed the following :
- GPU 1 runs on 99% load, at 49 degrees celcius
- GPU 2 runs on 0 % load, at 26 degrees celcius

To avoid obvious questions :
- Both GPU's are physically properly installed
- Both GPU's are also connected by and SLI connector and is activated in the GeForce controle settings panel
- In other games the GPU's both run under shared load, so it does work on my side.

Conclusion :
Elder Scrolls Online is not benefitting from both GPU's, even though it is listed as an SLI supported game

My framerates vary between 20 - 60 (its capped on 60 atm due to my monitor)

With this setup I should at least expect to get 60 FPS ALL the time

In the game options, make sure the game is set to "Fullscreen mode" and NOT "Windowed Full Screen"

Also as an FYI but Multi-gpu scaling in this game is pretty bad...neither AMD CrossfireX nor Nvidia SLI scale very well at all in ESO....so don't expect miracles when you get it working..

That should get your SLI working though. Hope that helps.

And when the world shall listen, and when the world shall see, and when the world remembers, that world will cease to be. - Miraak

Hi, thx for your input

Im running the game in Fullscreen mode indeed, and im not expecting a lot, since I mentioned that I would be happy with constantly 60 fps ;-)
2nd, I expect at least that my 2nd GPU gets used, at this current moment running at 0% load for an SLI compatible game, is unacceptable.. (that means the 2nd GPU is not even used, while it should)

    My system specs:

    Asus X99-E WS
    Intel i7-5960X
Corsair H110i GTX CPU liquid cooler
    32GB DDR4 RAM
    (2) EVGA GTX980Ti Classified ACX 2.0+ in SLI
850 EVO Pro OS & Game SSD drives
    SeaSonic Platinum 1200W PSU
    Windows 7 x64

I have no issues running SLI. I get well over 100 FPS except in cities and that is around 65-75 running ultra on all graphics. I don't use any addons either. I did make a few changes that helped ESO play well with my SLI setup.

    1. Go to the NVIDIA Control Panel and under Manage 3D Settings go to Program Settings and bring up ESO.exe.
    2. Under SLI rendering mode set that to Force alternate frame rendering 2.
    3. In your usersettings.txt file find the line for SET GPUSmoothingFrames "0". Make sure that is set to 0 and that you have Vsync turned off.

I run windowed full screen with no issues using this setup. Both GPU's are balanced when the game is running. I use MSI Afterburner to keep tabs on the use, temps etc.

Make sure that you're Nvidia settings are specifically running eso in sli.

Also if you are trying to run 4k resolutions your frames will be crap because it is a crap technology.

does it also work if you dont run it windowed, so full screen?

Yes it works with full screen as well. I think Cathexis means that in your NVIDIA control panel set up a profile for ESO under Manage 3D settings > Program Settings. You can either use the frame render 2 or NVIDIA recommended (Custom) in the SLI rendering mode in this area. It should be available if NVIDIA is seeing both cards. Under Global Settings SLI rendering Mode is most likely set to NVIDIA recommended if it sees both cards.

I'm probably out on a limb here since I don't have dual GPUs in SLI, but have you checked that SET MULTI_GPU_CHECK "1" is at 1 and not 0 in UserSettings.txt?

Yeah pretty important cause if it is 0 then it only sees one GPU.

that actually did the trick. the thing was i did change that setting to 1, but somehow it disabled itself again. so i quit the game, changed that setting again to 1, and -USEALLAVAILABLE cores comand & GPUsmoothingframes & so on.

it works now, my 2 gpu's are being used, but the game still doesnt perform very well.

On mantikora & serpent, i get a lot of lag (fps 20), even on 1920x1080 at low settings.. ive no clue whats wrong but i cant believe my PC isnt strong enough ^^

4k isn't crap technology, I fail to see a valid supporting argument, I've run games like crysis 3 and metro last light on a 4k tv and the picture is incredible (60 fps too!) As a bonus you can completly turn of AA as its not needed at 4k.
