Unable to log on any character not in Coldharbour

I last played ESO soon before the Imperial City update was released, but a move from the US to the UK prompted me to take a break from the game. After updating my game, I'm finding that any attempt to log into any character that isn't freshly made and still in Coldharbour results in one of the following two errors:

Unable to connect to game server...
An error has occurred. Please wait a few minutes and log in again.

I haven't changed anything as far as my installation goes since before my break, so I can't think of what could be causing this. I haven't reinstalled Windows or the game, nor have I changed anything with my antivirus (Avast! Premier). As stated before, I'm able to create new characters, though I'm unable to complete the tutorial as loading the starting zone fails at the end every time, disconnecting me from the game. I've tried several different characters in different zones and factions with no luck.

I've even tried disabling real-time protection within Avast to see if it could be the culprit, though even that doesn't seem to make a difference.

I haven't tried uninstalling and reinstalling the game, as it'd be a major inconvenience given how large the game is.

Any help would be appreciated.

Update: Repairing game didn't seem to help either.

I highly doubt this will fix it, but just as a test, try removing Avast and see if it makes any difference. My brother and I had an issue a while back that was causing some kind of input lag. He was trouble-shooting for weeks with ZOS, and as a last ditch "might as well try this", he removed Avast from our computers. Instantly fixed our issue. It's a long shot, but might be worth a try. At best, you find a fix, at worst, you have to reinstall Avast and keep hunting for a cause.

Still no reply to my support email or this thread. I guess Zenimax doesn't need my money.

Try renaming your ZO_Ingame.lua file and starting again from the Launcher.

(I add a 'z') in front of my file name so that if it doesn't work (or weird things happen) you can switch it back

    rename
    (ESO Install directory).../live/SavedVariables/ZO_Ingame.lua

    Worked for me just now.

No luck. Even completely reinstalled the game last night without any luck.

Was there any resolution to this? It has been a couple of days. I too am getting "An error has occurred. Please wait a few minutes and log in again." There isn't an error number or anything more descriptive than that. I've been on a break for a while too. I was able to log in a couple of weeks ago, but kept getting disconnected. I thought I'd give it another go tonight, but I can't even log in.

EDIT: Updated my addons and was able to get in.
EDIT: Still seeing "An error has occurred. Please wait a few minutes and log in again." This keeps popping up from time to time along with frequent disconnects. Glad I didn't buy the DLC on black Friday. No point spending money on something I can't use. I even just now got an inactivity disconnect while waiting to get to the character select screen after updating. ESO seems to be going downhill.
