    Recovery
Needs a both option, but I normally prefer to stack recovery as the passives from CP for recovery are better. Still need at elast some cost reduct though...

    Cost Reduction
As a Templar, I rely on spamming Puncturing Sweep. So I rely on cost reduction. But if I ever get enough CP to fill out the cost reduction, then I go onto magicka regen.

    Needs a Both option. :-)

I was following an older thread on this very subject, and folks had sound arguments on both sides..

Also doesn't it depend a bit on your race..

about my poll, you could just not vote & comment that you prefer both. Is that so difficult for you to do?

Im torn. With cost reduction, as someone pointed out in this forum, as you increase the amount of cost reduction you get deminishing returns. This is because the cost reduction takes place one at a time after each other (simple way to put it)

With recovery the problem I see, is if you do run out then no matter what the return is, you gotta wait 2 seconds. This can cause death. Some would say that proper resource management would ensure this doesn't happen, however there are many DK tanky build types that wait for this exact moment (by making the fight last that long) and burst for the eventual kill.

Obviously both is the right answer, but I know OP is looking for more than that.

I guess logically, in the long run, recovery would be more beneficial. It takes place the moment you cast your first spell just like cost reduction but doesn't have the deminishing returns.

    Cost Reduction
If you are talking cp I am filling up regen first with some in cost reduction. I like to put cost reduction on my rings and spell dmg on the other piece.

As a healer there are many ways to get magicka back but in the heat of battle I can spam big heals for a very long time.

On jewelry you get more for your enchant by going cost reduction.

So yes both are important but you can get by with 1200 regen if your cost reduction is sufficient.

    Cost Reduction
While reduction does have diminishing returns the higher the value, it also applies every time a skill is used as opposed to every 2 seconds. For example, over 2 seconds let's say you use 3 skills (Easily done) with a reduction of 100 the equivalent recovery is 300. Think you can get a 200% recovery value bonus?

Reduction on jewelry, 3:1 ratio for Magician/Arcanist has worked wonders for me, mind you this is with a Templar so Channelled Focus helps out (Pays for itself with first tick at 0.5 seconds).

    Cost Reduction
Both have their place. Cost reduction is superior mid fight, not just because you are fighting, but also because there are many other ways to restore magicka: Spirit siphon, Elemental drain, Pots, Enchants, Engine set etc

However in between fights, or in short fights where there is more stam usage for defending and kiting etc, regen is preferred.

Just remember a sign of bad magicka management skill is not only when your pool is consistently low, but also when it is consistently high.

Both; cost reduction lets you last longer before running out, recovery helps you when you've run out, and somewhat during the fight too. I stack cp into cost reduction and then wear a recovery glyph (and stack cp into recovery).

    Both/and
Tenesi Faryon of Telvanni - Dunmer Sorceress who deliberately sought sacrifice into Cold Harbor to rescue her beloved.
Hisa Ni Caemaire - Altmer Sorceress, member of the Order Draconis and Adept of the House of Dibella.
Broken Branch Toothmaul - goblin (for my goblin characters, I use either orsimer or bosmer templates) Templar, member of the Order Draconis and persistently unskilled pickpocket
Mol gro Durga - Orsimer Socerer/Battlemage who died the first time when the Nibenay Valley chapterhouse of the Order Draconis was destroyed, then went back to Cold Harbor to rescue his second/partner who was still captive. He overestimated his resistance to the hopelessness of Oblivion, about to give up, and looked up to see the golden glow of atherius surrounding a beautiful young woman who extended her hand to him and said "I can help you". He carried Fianna Kingsley out of Cold Harbor on his shoulder. He carried Alvard Stower under one arm. He also irritated the Prophet who had intended the portal for only Mol and Lyris.
    ***
Order Draconis - well c'mon there has to be some explanation for all those dragon tattoos.
House of Dibella - If you have ever seen or read "Memoirs of a Geisha" that's just the beginning...
Nibenay Valley Chapterhouse - Where now stands only desolate ground and a dolmen there once was a thriving community supporting one of the major chapterhouses of the Order Draconis

There are many factors that will make each decision more effective but as a general rule it is better to go cost reduction at low CPs and magic recovery at max CPs. They really are close enough that the distinction doesn't merit much of a discussion to anyone other than an absolute min/maxer.

Hey @Nifty2g , do you know of a resource that explains the diminishing returns of cost reduction?

    Cost Reduction
Cost Reduction until there aren't as many options/I have most of them and then Recovery. Aka "both," but cost reduction first and hardest. I always use The Atronach to help with sustain until I have the passives to handle it without. Happens at different times depending on class and build.

Depends on your build. If you mainly relay on recovery for ressource management, you should increase that, if you mostly relay on skills like siphoning attacks or elemental drain, then cost reduction is better.

Cost reduction in cp until the point of diminishing returns, then regen. Spell power on jewelry.

All 3 spell power. Why? Because recovery can come from your armour set bonuses, CP and mundus and cost reduction from CP.
