"The blood of giants flows through my veins. Your mother was a Nord; I gave her my seed without thinking of her safety. This is why she died - not because of you, child".

OK, what is THIS supposed to mean? I've heard it a hundred times, but yeah, no idea.

Oh. And Lyris's father lies. It's indirectly her fault aswell.

The father had giant blood (doesn't mean he inherited all of the giants traits). The mother didn't but they still did that bird and bee thing. He did it without thinking that if they were to have a child, there were high risks for that child to inherit giants traits too which in this case, happened. She wasn't strong enough to give birth to an oversized Lyris.

Let me give you a real life situation:

Parent #1 has a gene with a defect. Alone, it is harmless.

Parent #2 also has a gene with a defect. alone, again, it is harmless.

Both possesses different defective part of the same gene. They might not be aware of it because both of them were born without any problems. If both of those were to have a child, there is a high chance that the resulting child inherit the defective part o the gene from both parents creating an entire defective gene. This now fully defective gene can cause problems to the child in term of anomaly, malformations, handicaps and so on.

In Lyris' case, The father was holding a large part of Giants gene but probably not enough for it to affect him much. When it got combined with a Nord's gene, which in general are already larger by themselves, it might have created a wrong mix and ended up making Lyris larger than usual with the addition of both gene pool.

One may interpret it as an issue with size. You know, the "mating ritual" was too "big a burden" for the poor woman to bear and whatnot... But also consider this prospect: Racism.

Races are always going on about who is superior. That being said, none of them actually gives a damn about what they consider "monstrosities". A Nord bred with a Giant, thus creating a half-breed. This alone is frowned upon pretty much entirely by both races' peers. Some kind souls accept such a union of course, but just look at examples like InuYasha.

All we can do is pity the half-breeds for the way they are treated... Peer Pressure is Real.

Lyris blames herself because her mother died in childbirth; feeling it was her fault for being born at all, as if it's something she could choose. Her father says it's not her fault, it's his, because he has giant in his genes which led to Lyris being born abnormally and thus a higher chance of not surviving childbirth, which she didn't.

I thought it was pretty straight-forward personally.

I am the very model of a scientist Salarian, I've studied species Turian, Asari, and Batarian.
I'm quite good at genetics (as a subset of biology) because I am an expert (which I know is a tautology).

I guess that was the point. Lyris dad was normal size although he has giant's blood. Nord lady thought he was a normal guy. She got knocked up and died giving birth to a Giant baby.

So Dad ghost's takes the blame for not telling Lyris's mom that he was a freak in the first place, that he was an abomination of a giant.

Lyris' dad had a high %DBH calving ease score and her mom didn't check the sire summaries before they got hitched.

At least that's the way a farm girl would explain it.

I guess I should leave this here.
