When, for example, people played Battlefield 1942... there where no leaderboards, achievements, unlocks or whatever. People played for fun.
When I play BF2142 or BF3, I had many people leave the game because "they already have all unlocks" or "have a *** K/D ratio".
The same for mmo's. I played Starwars Galaxies, which didn't have quests to start with and there was no reward for anything. But people played... for "fun". Same could be said for Vanguard or other mmo's which did have rewards for most quests/raids, but people did stuff over and over again like overland raids which didn't give rewards, but because it was fun.
These days, if there is no better loot reward then they already have... they don't like to do it.
I love the dungeons in TESO. I could do them over and over again. I wish I found a group who would do all dungeons on veteran mode with me. I don't need a reward. I play for the fun.
I don't care about achievements. I don't like the fishing... so I won't have the master angler achievement. Other people also don't like the fishing, but do go for the achievement... why? They play not to have fun, but for the unlocks.
FYI, the requirement that all 4 people be on the same phase of the quest was removed over a year ago. I have helped many players open the portal in the Missing Guardian quest so they could continue (and most of the time helped them with it because I do enjoy that quest).
Fishing: Oh hell no. Not unless they have an actual GOOD colour with it.!
