Damage shields - are they affected by resistance?

Quite simply. if I shoot some one with a damage shield does the damage i do to that shield get affected by the targets spell/physical resistance?

Currently my assumption is that damage shields take the full damage without mitigation affecting them and this is what probably causes the unmitigated damage overspill bug but can anyone confirm or deny this or explain if/how they are affected by the players resistances?

Your assumption is largely, but not fully correct. The champion point perks "hardy" and "elemental defender" reduce respective damage mechanics prior to hitting a shield.

NB: this was the state of the game for IC original patch. Maybe they added some form of RNG or completely changed the mechanics without me being aware of it in the meantime. Who knows.

Also, overflow bug is said to be fixed.
