I have a question about Role Players in ESO

I am serious, please don't think I'm trolling. Why do you guys do it in zone chat? Why do you do the role playing where everyone see's what you're saying, and not in group chat? I mean you gotta know it makes non-RPers feel a little weird...and don't you achieve the same effect by chatting in group chat not zone chat? I'm genuinely curious, and i'm not slamming or making fun of you, I'm just generally scratching my head at your exhibitionist behavior :flushed:

I've actually wondered that myself. Any time I walk in on some RPers it doesn't make me feel weird or anything, but I do always wonder why they're not doing it in /group just because it seems to me like doing it in /group would cut down on the number of people trolling them.

I've never heard anyone RPing in area chat and I usually have it turned on in listen mode, which platform are you on? I imagine its more common on PC than PS4, anyway I don't RP but I'd imagine they are doing it in area to try to attract like-minded souls to their coven.

Don't hear many RPers in zone chat myself, I'd guess most do RP in group or guild.
Compared to some of the rubbish that gets talked in zone chat and exhibitionist behaviour I'd say RPers are pretty harmless.

    Well, y'see...

I assume you're talking about the public channels /say and /emote. Generally, I'll RP in those so that others nearby can join in if they so wish, or so that non-RPers (or even RPers who just aren't in the mood to RP) can sit and watch. Before I got into it myself, I used to love finding RPers out “in the wild” and watching them for a time.

Now, in the event that my groupies and I don't want to be bothered, we'll use /group.

But people use certain colors for their chatting, and they look like they are in the same guild most of the time, I just don't see how that is inviting to someone who may want to join them. I feel like if I were to interject something I would be cursed out for interrupting or be completely ignored.

I'd actually welcome hearing people RP it can be groovy with people who can pass a Charisma check. Or it can be just plain weird and creepy with the others. It beats people yelling, kids crying, or people playing rubbish music which happens sometimes in town.

That's weird to me, and slightly off putting.

RP should either be done in /emote or /group. Broadcasting it over a zone is just as bad as trolling in zone. Not only that, but you cant take it seriously. Like, really? You're RPing in a tavern but I can hear you down on this beach?

Try bringing that up to them next time, although it sounds like they're just a ball of cringe who don't really care for the narrative aspect, but the attention it garners.

I once entered stormhaven to find some aggressive Erping going on in zone. *shudders*

If you're unsure, it never hurts to ask! Most RPers will be polite about telling you if you can or can't join in. The key is just communicating.

I think most role players will be welcoming. It is probably polite to observe a scene for a bit before just jumping in. You might start out emoting a line that your character is passing by or something. That would give them an opportunity to include you if they want to.

Edit - I misunderstood your OP. I didn't realize you meant the entire zone. I have no idea why they do that. I'm on console, so not sure what chat options are available for PC ESO. I'm assuming there is a local chat that would be less intrusive.

Are there any role player groups that put on like stage shows for people to watch? I would love to watch a play or story or something.

The stage in... Grahtwood was it? The one where you have to help the entertainers by recovering their things and then they put on a show on the outdoor stage... would be ideal for that.

One time people were doing this in zone at an anchor and they were in a low level area and they were V16s and the people were just wiping the dolman every time it popped, it seemed unfair to people who needed to clear it. I was questing in that zone on a side and kept trying to catch the dolman and the people kept doing it over and over while standing around chatting in zone

I honestly didn't realize there were RPers using zone chat. They really shouldn't be. I can only speak for PC/NA on the EP side of things, but everyone there pretty much exclusively uses /emote (purple), or /say (white). The purple is best used when writing in an action before dialogue or setting a scene/mood/feeling. Purple is your general Rp chat. White is used to directly respond to something, without providing context or describing any actions.

Examples; /emote(purple) John Wayne: walked cautiously into the tavern, eyes darting left to right, hoping to find a familiar face. He froze immediately upon seeing his own ragged reflection peering back at him from the looking glass. "Is that you John Wayne, is this me?"

/say(white) John Wayne: Shut up you lying son of a skeever's arse!

RPing is kinda weird to me, with one exception - Fallen Earth.

The post-apocalyptic survivalist nature of the game, combined with the open-world PvP and six overlapping factions made it very easy to fall into character.

That said, much of the dialog was centered around combat, PvP, resource ownership etc. It was kinda shallow in some respects, but it was very organic and never felt forced.

But when I walk into a tavern in ESO and hear olde-worlde high-fantasy language, with people talking about glimpsing the barmaids bosom or wiping away tears or something... it just feels forced and weird. Sure, it adds a little interest to the game, to stumble across these little interactions, and I do appreciate that people enjoy it as much as I enjoy standing around and listening for a few moments.

It's just not my cup of tea. But that doesn't mean I don't appreciate the interactions that other people can have with the game and passers-by.

As an RP fanatic in-game (it's pretty much 90% of what I do aside from daily writs, checking riding skills, stealing), I don't see why anyone would RP in the /zone chat, nor have I ever seen it. Then again, I tend to keep zone chat off because seeing all the random chatter kills any mood that someone tries to set. However I and many others use /say and /emote chats, and rarely /yell depending on what they're doing.

Using /say is just for general talk, like if you're answering a question or casually carrying on a conversation.

Using /emote is for describing an action or setting a scene. Like saying you're swinging your axe or casting a spell or something.

Using /yell is done at times when you actually want your character's shouting to reach a longer distance than the regular /say or /emote channels.

I personally have used group chat for RP, but only in RP situations best left private, or if the whole group is scattered and /emote, /say, and /yell won't cut it for communication. Sometimes I've used /group and /whisper for private conversations or keeping voices low to avoid in-character eavesdroppers.

And no I don't feel awkward about using /say, /emote, and /yell channels.

The short answer... because we can.
FYI - There is no such thing as 'night capping' in a world wide MMO.
FYI - There was no paid Beta. When they launched the game the Beta was over, even if you don't think it was.
    FYI - It's B2P not F2P. There is a difference.
FYI - It doesn't take any player skill to mash keys or buttons in this game. The ones that stay alive longer have the better internet connection and speed.
FYI - The game is not broken, it still works. It just has 'bugs' that need to be fixed.
    Balance is a "Bad" thing.

Example: There were hundreds of Jedi and only two Sith in Star Wars. The Jedi wanted, "Balance in the Force" and they got it. Now there are only two Jedi and two Sith.

    Balance is a "Bad" thing.
Is the glass half full or half empty?
I say, "Get a smaller glass."

Zone chat? I've never seen that. Using /emote, /say and /yell are used for RP because often you are around other RPers who are not in your /group and therefore wouldn't know what was going on. If THAT bothers you, try asking ZOS to create the "RP Shard" they all but promised before launch but then reneged on.

    Couple a different answers here:

    1) if by zone chat you mean /z or /zone, I don't understand why people would RP in zone chat except to be exhibitionists as you say. My friends and I don't use zine chat fir RP purposes

    2) Some people do RP in /g or /group, but only if they want privacy and people not to hear what the are RPing. Most of the time group chat is used by groups of RPers to discuss things out of character and plan what they will /say or /emote.
Also if you are at a busy Inn with multiple RP guilds usually each guild is in its own group and talking about the unfoldin RP that occurs in /say or /emote, or /yell

    3) In /emote the general idea is for non-verbal actions and cues that reflect your character's feelings or state of mind and to prompt other people and their characters ex) " [Molag Bal] picks up his mug of ale and cheers loudly"

    4) Basically anything that is /emote or /say or /yell for an RPer should be in character (assuming that they are engaged in RP with other RPers)

So we're not trying to be exhibitionists there are just some conventions of RP we adhere to . . .

If the RP session is private they will do it in a group chat, but part of the RP experience is the fact that unless they go somewhere private or just plain whisper anyone will be able to hear what they say, hence why they do it in an area-based chat.

The RP guild that I'm in frequently holds RP events which sometimes include other guilds, which in turn causes us to be in two separate groups which tend to be filled up. So we use /say and /emote, but we've never used /zone chat for RPs. I think those people where just trolling.
