Why chose roles?

Apparently Zenimax has taken a dark route which will only end with everyone being a damage dealer in this game. Recent ideas (if you watched the latest eso live you know) about the dungeons being doable with 4 dds and rearranging the fights in them just to fit that criteria is one more indicator about their intentions. Tanks and healers will eventually be wiped out from this game, but have no fear people...the new grouping tool will be working just fine finding 4 dds!!! They stated "we wanna do this because the majority of people are playing dds and it will be easier and faster for them to find groups". Well you should know there in the studios that people play dds, because you have been nerfing every bit of content steadily for a year now to the point that tanks and healers are not needed any more to complete anything. And after you've done all that, you introduce us to this solo arena where you need to be a dd to participate. You should be doing content that prompts people to learn and play good healers and tanks and not just flatten everything out to a big mob of hack and slash dds running around posting damage meters. Make content that needs roles. Make raids that need 3 tanks in a 12 man group and not just 1 off-tank. Give the people reasons to chose their role. All this conclude to one question only: Why chose a role now? You know...that little icon in the group options stating which role you want to play!!!

Change it so that choosing a role would have an impact on the character. Benefiting from it for doing his job properly in a group, or getting punished by it for not doing what his role requires.

I Don't believe they can make content that can be completed by 4 damage dealers and be enough to challenge a proper set up group. Their logic is flawed. But I'd hate for the system to lock you into one role and punish you for not going that role 24/7. I like to do a bit of both

The idea of 4 damage dealers being able to clear content is ridiculous. You can already do almost all normal dungeons with 3 damage dealers and a tank/healer. And tank most vet content without being completely dedicated to the role. i dont see why they would want to water it down any further. if you don't want people left out through lack of roles, incentives for those roles is the way to go. Content that rewards those roles. Maelstrom is the perfect example. You could have made it so its not a DPS race or so you can enter it as a certain role, so instead of dps checks you have a heal check or a damage mitigation check instead.

i dont even understand how an MMO without role requirement would work every one would re-roll the top DPS Fotm because they dont need to be anything else.

All part of the Elder Scrolls mindset, where you can create a character and have complete freedom to make however you wish.

We were given 4 classes, add a smidge of that mindset to it, some gusto and VOILA!: DPS classes can tank, Healer can DPS as well and any class can DPS like there's no tomorrow.

And ofc that's where I feel the great PvP imbalance is coming from too.

Not saying "unchangable" like you chose it once and that's it, you are eternally doomed...

But they could for example pop up a message every time you enter an instance prompting you to choose your role for that specific run. So you choose to tank, HURRAY you get X% more damage mitigation for that run. You choose to be a dd, HURRAY your abillitys drop your opponents resistances X%. You choose to heal, HURRAY your heals also shield your target for X% of their health.

The "punishing" part comes in the way that if someone tanks and he chose the healer role...well then, he's buff is useless right?

The ideas above are just ideas. I'm sure plenty of people will be having similar or even better ones...so on top of voting in the poll, lets hear those ideas out too. Maybe Zenimax will do something about it eventually.

Yeah this is entirely correct in my opinion, and it's getting to be a real bugbear.

I only play one char really, it's the same char I've had all the way from the public beta, a Templar. I've tried differing variations, but the way I most enjoy playing is as a tank. ZOS have to realise, assuming they don't already realise, that they have created a highly DPS centric game. It's just not the case that there are so many DD chars because people naturally like that role (although some do obviously) it's because the game obviously favours high/fast damage.

And it doesn't seem that complex of a problem, at least in my head. I don't want to do loads of damage in a short space of time. I just want the tools to make a really defensive build, so that I can handle incoming damage, and deal my own damage over a longer period of time. To some degree I had those tools, but you just keep on nerfing them. The shield nerf was just awful for my char.

I reckon its time for a rethink. Slow down combat a little, make it a little more tactical.

those extra bubbles would actually be more harmful since bubbles dont lower the damage felt by them via resistances, better off just increasing healing output :)

It does not matter what role you "check" or "uncheck".
I had teams with too many bad tanks and bad healers in group.
Yesterday i joined one group for dungeon. Everyone on Vr2 tank/sorc healer/templar, looks ok right? Well tank was running away from boss when he aggro him, healer was doing damaga and only damage. Do not get me wrong, i do not care if you are a good player or even decent, i do care however if you are atleast trying to do your job. I even told tank to take taunt and keep boss on himself but tank did not responded.
Do only content for damage dealers. Do content where you dont need to move just stay in one place and spam one ability. That is what we all want RIGHT?

I don't see a problem with choosing roles as it is. Yes, tanks and healers can also dps, and dps can also off-tank and off-heal, and that just adds to the diversity of group play. But in general you still need the roles.

Now, if ESO were to lose classes and just have everyone build their role from a common skill pool... I wouldn't mind that. Not at all :) But I think that ship has sailed long ago.
