Dots questions

Can someone explain me if dots like Unstable Flame are good for pvp? I'm not a pro, but I hear many complainings about and I would like to know why.

Thanks :)

In general with many people running purges, DoTs lose most of their effectiveness.

Only because of the purges? Well it cost resources, so I don't see a problems with that, I would say are equal conditions.

    More reasons?

Is unstable flame the stamina morph?

    If so, yes.

It's so cheap you can spam it forever. Forget about the dot.

I don't see why you can't run dots in pvp. But I think it is better to run skills that cause burst damage in pvp. I'm no pvp expert or anything but I rarely see builds that include dots for pvp.

While this is true, if op is a Stam Dk then his only two class morphs are dots.

I used it on mine. Crit rush, unstable flame, then carry on. Just in case the fight want on a while.

Why DoTs downright suck in PvP:

    1) The CP system

You have up to 3 different way to mitigate DoTs. Let's say you're using Unstable Flame against someone with waaay too many CPs:
    - He will receive 25% less damage because it's a DoT (75%)
    - he will receive 25% less damage because it's flame damage (56.25% because we take into account the already calculated mitigation)
    - He will receive 25% less damage whenever it crits, (42.18%) PLUS he will benefit from the Resilient passive, healing him for a flat amount

Basically, fast ticking dots are out of the question. It reaches the point where you can actually HEAL from standing in a fast ticking AoE dot (e.g. wall of elements).

    2) Purges

    - Almost all Nightblades use Dark Cloak, which purges no less than 4 DoTs.
    - All templars (that know what they're doing at least) run Puryfing ritual (or the other morph, don't remember the name) purging up to 5 effects
    - Even magicka sorcerers and magicka DKs sometimes use (Efficient) Purge, which also remove DoTs

    3) Low DoT damage

Overall DoTs deal in most cases barely more damage than burst abilities, like Wrecking blow, Surprise attack...

    4) DoTs are blockable

If someone decides to use Cripple on you, and you block, congratz! You just nullified the entire DoT. Yup, why use a DoT with a chance to have 0 effect when you can use an instant cast ability that'll still deal damage, if the target blocks.

This doesn't sound very good... Is truly so bad or these are extreme casual situations?

I have one magicka DK build that relies on dots and honestly I love using it regardless of Purge simply because Purge is a costly skill and constantly reapplying my small cost dots while forcing my enemy to oom their resources makes the fight gratifying.

I'm sure if you spam it enough times it will be effective. The problem is the damage occurs over time, which is instantly nulled by purge, not allowing any time for damage to take effect. If you spam it enough times tho you may drop your opponents stamina long enough for them not to purge and sink 1 in.

Most people can't 1-shot others. Resto staff offbar problem solved. I apply armor and toss a heal every so often and generally outlast my opponent.

It used to, now not anymore. But do you know how much time do you need to burn 10k shield with dots? Especially with mele dots as a DK.

I was informing myself a little bit and I found many interesing things, but particulary I will post only one video, because I think it explains very good what is happening with DK and the most viable build of today.

This gamer uses as a main damage skill Wrecking Blow and I believe is because, it's the most similar skill to Surprise attack from NB. He says that is difficult to land it vs good pvp players (easy to interrupt)and that you need to positionate very good.

He also uses Unstable Flame, but not as main skill, he don't rely on that skill, is only a dot to complement some damage.

I don't know if this is the intention of zinemax, if they believe is not a problem and that is ok. But it would be good get some feedback to know what to expect.

In my opinion maybe would not be bad if Unstable Flame morph to stamina would be change to insta damage and no dots anymore. Problem would be I think the fire elemental attribute damage reduce in CP.

Now I want to understand this:

You have up to 3 different way to mitigate DoTs. Let's say you're using Unstable Flame against someone with waaay too many CPs:
    - He will receive 25% less damage because it's a DoT (75%)

    - He will receive 25% less damage whenever it crits, (42.18%) PLUS he will benefit from the Resilient passive, healing him for a flat amount

Basically, fast ticking dots are out of the question. It reaches the point where you can actually HEAL from standing in a fast ticking AoE dot (e.g. wall of elements).

    - Thick Skinned minus 25% of damage from damage over time effects. Nothing to do here, there isn't any other CP to counter this.
    - Elemental Expert: increases elemental damage + 25% so we can say that this counter Elemental defender.
    - Resilent: if the thick is critical in theory this would be triggered. But it would be good to confirm it. Because maybe is designed to only trigger to normal skills crits and not dots.

To finish it's also very important to know the priority order of apply of the %. What I mean is: if all % are added together or if first is discounted the 25%, then the 50%, or if first is taken in account the armor of the enemy and then the resistances and etc. This can make a huge difference or if it is wrong, a very bad thing.
