I have used both, and never for PvP. However, for PvE, its great to use if you can use the mobs tactics to your favor. When I used Minefield, I would move up to the mobs just outside of aggro range, then drop the mines. Then back up and fire a ranged attack once they were activated, kited the mobs across the mines. So, it's all in how you use it.
I recently changed the morph to the 3 that activate immediately and I think I like that better. Reason, the mobs coming after you have to cross 3 of them, and you don't have to wait for them to activate.
