I've also hung out with friends - skype or teamspeak makes grouping with buddies in other states very enjoyable.

I did try that early on; but I only have about 3 friends who roleplay the same extended clan/family, and that's not enough to make a guild. So yes I join them, but thats never going to be where my primary allegance/energy is.
