Racial Passives

I'm not a fan of the racial passive system as it tunnels players into choosing specific races in relation to their character build. Those who pick their race for aesthetics, for role playing or other reasons are pretty much given the middle finger.

A better system would be to introduce racial passive trainers. These trainers would be distributed throughout the campaigns becoming available to unlock once you reach each factions zone. For example, a Breton starting in daggerfall could unlock the high elf passives via a trainer once they reach the aldmeri dominion quest line.

Each character would be given a passive slot allowing the player to select and drag the racial passives they choose to the slot in the same way character abilities are handled. Ie. an imperial who wants the redguard passives would remove the base imperial passives from their passive slot replacing them with the redguard passives.

Each races sub passives would not require skill points. They would be granted automatically once they meet the required character level.

Agreed. Now it's just another source of imbalance. They removed soft caps and screwed a lot of players.

I actually hosted a poll on what race people's main characters were and I feel like that breakdown would be useful to this conversation.

    http://forums.elderscrollsonline.com/en/discussion/222748/in-game-racial-demographics/p1

Also, I'm completely against OP's idea. I know people will choose certain races for certain roles (like in every Elder Scrolls game) and pick certain classes for certain roles (like in every Elder Scrolls game sans Skyrim), but I and many of the players from console at least that I've talked to are choosing our characters not for the racial passives, but for the story traits of that particular race. I honestly don't know anyone that would change what race they play as if all the racial passives were removed completely.

Cherry pick the most effective passives?? rotfl. That comment doesn't even make sense.

It's called a "character creation screen" and everyone uses it as soon as the meta changes.

Racial changes and appearance modifications are in the works. The only toes this sort of thing steps on are the lore junkies and even that can be worked through via simple quests, etc. Does it not make sense from a lore perspective that a character who spends a lot of time training with another race will pick up their qualities? There is no true downside for this kind of change. It allows anyone to play whatever they want without being punished. It also adds even more customization and frees up server resources where people are re-rolling just for the sake of a meta change.

I actually agree!! If you want to be great at PVP then you will need to pick the best race for the class you wish to play because of the passives. Pretty much all you see in PVP is the same races just because their passives are much better. Then you have people like myself who either wanted to be different or were just not very smart (Ohhh I think a Lizard healer would be awesome :) ). I like my Argonian templar but I sometimes feel gimped and often wished I would have picked a Breton or High Elf race for my templar.

Yeah, they've made some pretty poor design decisions when it comes to the racial passives. It's another aspect of the game that turns players off.

There are lots of top players that play a build that directly contradicts their racial passive bonuses and they still outperform 99,9% of the population.

If youre going to talk bout how this this "breaks immerssion" then i am going to talk about how its incredibly racist to assume that a race of people if predisposed to being good at something or bad at something....

I love the idea of choosing racial passives, we dont have to call them racial passives, we can call them perks if that is what will make your immersion not break... I wanna play my favorite race but not receive a significant handicap because I do....

That is true, I was #6 on vet DSA overalll for a long time with my 12k+ score, but guess what I wasnt? Number 1...and I damn sure want to be number one, but when my Khajit templar Healer wasnt pumping enough dps no matter how much I tweaked my setup, that frustrated me...I didnt mind working hard against all odds, but it is incredibly discouraging to know that there is no way I will ever make up that 5-7k magicka difference when it comes to damage and survivability...yes to racial changes...

I feel sorry for those that refuse to let themselves actually play the race they WANT because they are so convinced that racials make a noticeable difference.. Even an imperials 10% extra stamina is crappy once you have broken it down. It sounds like a LOT but its bugger all. Its half a skills worth in stamina if you have 20k stam and about an extra 100 damage on a WB.

It was never and never will be a game changer no matter how many "pro gamers" tell you otherwise.

You mean like forced to grind champion points? forced to level from 0 - v16? Forced to grind gear? Forced to play a race you don't want to because of the passives? Forced to level up skill lines? Force to hunt shards and skill points? Forced to PvP in the IC to grind telvarr stones?

I don't particularly care how its implemented. They could introduce it in the form of lore book schematics for all I care.

It may seem small at first but it does add up. Imagine two equally geared/lev/skill NB's fighting each other.. one is a Wood Elf and the other is an Argonian (they chose this because they like tails :)), which one do you think will win the fight? My money would be on the one that chose the better racial passives. At the end of the day those that chose the race with better passives to match their class are going to be in better shape than those that just chose to play a race/class because it looked cool. Thus we will most likely see most serious gamers funnel into a few class/race combos unless the passives are changed at some point!

They idea of making race matter is interesting but hard to implement. I think that if anyone could choose each passive from the races you would loose that idea of uniqueness. I think probably the best implementation of passive skill selection was in Daggerfall where you could choose advantages at the cost of experience which could be lessened by choosing disadvantages. The races all had their own stories and where reacted to differently in a shallow way but they really didn't effect the build much.

The races have unique passives, and while your idea is sexy I suggest you deal with the fact that it's an ES title.

They just need to spend time redesigning the passives for how the game is now. We still have the passives from the soft cap days. They just don't want to/have the time to do it because balancing doesn't make them DLC or Crown Store money. When you're wondering why something is not getting done, the answer is probably related to money, or the obvious racism against Argonians.

I've always been for race change. People who claim certain Racial passives don't make a huge difference don't know how the power curve of this game works. The higher stats are the higher the damage is. Dunmer DK is a perfect example. 7% spell damage on fire abilitys. Pair that Race up against Argonian and tell me there isn't a notable difference.

    Briza Do'urdenx V16 Dunmer DK
    Jcon V16 Orc DK
    Vierna Do'urdenx V16 Bosmer NB
    Jarlaxle Baenrex V16 Dunmer NB

This right here. I think having racial passives in this game is what makes it unique compared to other MMO's. It adds another layer to the dynamic combat system. I disagree with getting rid of racial passives. This is an Elder scrolls game after all. If you don't feel as "1337" because you didn't choose the "right" race based on what everyone else chose, well you do have 6 other slots to create a character.

In short, keep racial passives, just buff the other lackluster ones *cough argonian cough*

I pick my race not based on the passives, sometimes they just work out. But I deal with the ones that don't really help. I've always been a fan of opposite characters , like a sneaky orc, or an heavy wood elf. Just the way I play :)

Screw the flavor of the month my argonion healer will keep you going.
