Heavy armor for soloing as a magicka dps?

I'm considering switching to heavy armor on my rather low leveled templar because I'm dying quite often while soloing. The idea came from a previous thread, where a user mentioned that they used heavy armor on their healer because they valued their survivability, which I, at the time, quickly dismissed
Mostly thinking of 2/0/5 so that I level up the light armor a bit so that I can switch to it later on when playing in a group or something.
Is it viable to be a magicka dps character without that 20% reduction and regeneration bonus?

Anything is pretty much "viable" while levelling, although I have found that offense is the best defense for me personally, heavy armor might be the answer for you.

My advice is to not take "viability" too seriously while levelling and in stead focus on doing what you find the most fun.
Come "endgame" you can always tweak to whatever role you are supposed to fill.

@Acsvf On pretty much all of my characters pre vet levels I wear a mix of all three armour types with the training trait on. A magic user might for example have 3 light, 2 heavy, 2 medium, whereas a tanking or stamina character might have 3 heavy or medium and two of the others. Once I hit veteran levels I might switch to 5 light 2 heavy depending on the character i'm levelling.

Pretty much all magicka users should be using 5 light and 2 heavy right now to increase their dps from light armor passives and stam users should be using medium armor to increase dps and sustain through their passives. Heavy armor is pretty much only for tanks right now.

As a magicka templar you should not have any survivability problems even in 7 light. On a good build setup Puncturing Sweep powerful enough to keep you alive alone in most solo situation. If PS is not enough You always have BOL and maintain a Extended Ritual under your feet or/and a mutagen on yourself. Heavy armor will not help you nearly as much as a nearly inexhaustible magicka pool for damage and heals.

Templars have the best leveling ability in the game, I think, and it's puncturing sweep. It heals you based on damage done so spam that baby wearing 5 light 1 medium and 1 heavy chest to level all three armor lines and you're set. If you run all magicka enchants your puncturing sweep will heal you for a lot.

On one bar you could do puncturing sweep, vampires bane/reflective light (my personal, choice hits 3 people) toppeling charge, spear shards and radiant destruction. On the other bar you could run purifying ritual, blazing shield, channeled focus, repentance, and breath of life.

Bar 1 people die, bar 2 people live.
