If ESO Console Dies

I have said it before but I still just do not understand how consoles could ever sustain an mmo for very long. Granted I know there are a few that have lasted a while but it just seems like the wrong demographic for mmo gaming in general. I'm sure there are some hardcore mmo'ers on console but overall, it seems like consoles are more suited to buy it, beat it, move on. Personally that's how I console game, and out of a large group of friends and acquaintances who game, I don't know of any who mmo on console. Maybe the demographic is changing though and I just haven't witnessed it yet in my circle.

Well EQOA for the PS2 lasted for over 12 years.. Even after the PS3 came out people were still playing it..

If the right company is behind a console MMO it will last for years.

That's true. Like I said, perhaps the demographic is slowly changing. Just seems to be easier to make one last on pc. Perhaps it's just a matter of sheer volume of titles that release there vs console, and not so much dependent on the platform.

I can agree that the demographic is changing. I was here sitting in front of my towering pc playing the very first MMO's. Beta testing the big ones that paved the way. Asherons Call and Everquest being the largest I have enjoyed beta testing. I will say that I am older now and I enjoy playing MMO's on my console..

TBH I am actually jelly over where MMO players are right now. They are in a great time in gaming. MMO's developers now have consoles that have basically caught up to PC's in power. MMO players are now going to be able to chose if they want to play on a PC or console.

If I had the option to play an MMO on console or PC it would be Console. I know there are PC purest out there. I just think the PC master race is a dying thing.

    Rejoice console players!

@Funkopotamus I disagree, I think pc gaming is bigger than ever, hence the Alienware alpha, long gone are the days that you need an office to put a pc in, and a monitor and keyboard and setups, you can get a pc, plug it into the TV in the living room and use a controller.

And I don't think anyone could ever argue a console is anywhere near as powerful as a built pc. I recently purchased bf 4 on my pc that I used to have on console, and the graphics are on a whole new level, not to mention frame rates, mods to keep old games updated etc etc

EQOA lasted over 10 years on console, DCUO has so far lasted over 5 years on console plus, it still has a bigger player base on console than on PC. FFXIV has also been going a few years and is still very popular on the ps4 (ported from ps3)
You may not have not have many friends who play MMO's on console, but there is no denying the fact they do extremely well on consoles.

I would think that they would offer a transfer option since it is essentially the same game.

Console MMOs have been around since the 90s and they are hit and miss when it comes to whether they have been successful. Some ran for a long time, others not. Probably most notably, EQOA on PS2 ran for 9 years. There are quite a few in the currently generation. I think they realize that PC sales have been declining for years and consoles are also a viable market.

I recently removed the PS4 megaserver from my signature, as I am pretty much only PC/Mac now. That said, I doubt the PS4, or any platform, is going away any time soon.

There has been a rapid decline in the observable PS4 game population, especially when compared to the PC/Mac megaserver. Primary cities in primary zones are lightly populated while the corresponding places on the PC/Mac server are bustling.

I would attribute some of this decline to the normal block of lookie loos that poke around and then move on. Still, ESO is not an easy game to love, from an operational perspective. You have to be able to tolerate quirky servers, bugs that are never going to be fixed, exploits that are allowed to run for months, long waits between patches that don't fix all the problems, a less than optimal handshake between the console "first party" and ZOS, and other issues that are best not mentioned directly.

I also think that the Imperial City faux pas with the surprise resetting of the skill points caused a lot more problems for console than it did for PC/Mac. The console UI and lack of add-ons does not lend itself well to that sort of behavior. Hopefully, there is a new plaque in the main entrance of the ZOS HQ that states a new corporate mission to never do that again.

I am sure that they want to turn this battleship around, and eventually those two guys out there rowing will do it. I guess they are depending on people returning in a couple years when they finally fix the game.

Orsinium should help, as I think it suits the player base better than Imperial City.

I dunno I guess because it is portable? lol

I only paid for that laptop so I could take it with me when I travel for work. I can do everything I need to for work....... Oh I can also run ANY game that comes out for the next 5 years on it if I am traveling for work and stuck in a hotel room.

But at the end of the day I would much rather be gaming on a console. I just wish more MMO's were available. Right now all we have as far as MMO's go on Xbox one are ESO and Neverwinter.. Sadly Neverwinters population is A LOT higher than ESO's..

I just wish ZOS would get things ironed out and make this game more than just stunning graphics.. The skeleton of a history making MMO is here... But there is just so many things ZO$ could Should do a better job with!

Nothing's shutting down anytime soon. Relax, go play.

Until its announced how many subscribers there are, these concerns are real. 1 subscriber = 1 paying account. Not 1 account with 8 alts making a fake 8 subscribers.

The reason the group finder sucks is not because it doesn't work.. There's no one playing this game. Opening it up to all factions will be nice, but co-ordinated PvP cheating will reach an all time high. With no gamemasters on console it wont matter regardless.

It doesn't take a genius to see what's going on here. Real numbers or these people are raising a legitimate concern.

Nope. 1 paying subscriber counts towards the total. The total sub count are the people who pay the bills. Total count of paying customers or the rest is flake talk.

This game has been going for years already on PC and so far the playerbase has not diminished enough to cut into their profit margin nor do I expect it will anytime soon. It's been about 4 months now since ESO released to consoles so stop expecting doomsday so soon already and just play the damn game. Personally, I would still play the game if I wanted to even if the servers were ghost towns.

    Ugh What?!?

PC is working on its third year. As of Console Launch it was entering its second year. And the playerbase dipped quite a lot after the first summer.

ESO is no more special than any other MMO out there. If they make too many decisions that chase off too many players at any given time. They run the risk of the title tanking. And Console has definitely saw an exodus. Unlike PC Players Console players have the ability to sell their game if it does not please them. So theyre less likely to stick with it through hard times if the game takes a turn for the worst. Since they arent completely out their investment like PC Players.

Maybe overall, but definitely not active console accounts.

It seems like a nice bit of kit, your only limiting factors will be the cp and gpu, as even atm the 980m will struggle to do much more than 35fps on a demanding game.

I know portable tech costs more money, but take for instance 700 got me this

    2tb HD
    250gb SSD
    36mb ram
    2 x radeaon r9 390s 16gb
    I7 4790k 4.5ghz overclocked

And a nice water cooling system to keep it dead silent. I don't have a 4k TV yet (that's a Christmas thing) but I plugged it into a friends, and I can honestly say I've never Seen such a crisp clear image before.

I can only imagine server maintenance chaos and then the PC folks being upset cause DLC is always delayed until both Xbox and Sony pass it via cert.

    If sales can survive
    They may find-

    In the year 3535
Ain't gonna need to bubble no shields
    Proc no Shards
    Every time you bolt away
Is corrected in the nerf they did today

    In the year 4545
Ain't gonna need those flappy wings
    Won't need no dragon's blood
You won't find a skill to use
    Nobody really cares about you

    In the year 5555
Your mouse is worn out and died
Your hands got nothing to do
Some gold farmer is doing it for you

    In the year 6565
Ain't going to need no cloak
    Won't really need to hide
You'll Ambush them all, surprise attack them too
Then post it all on Youtube

    Whoa-oh-oh

    In the year 7510
    If Balance is coming
It ought to be by then
Maybe the devs will look around and say
"Guess it's time to nerf away"

    In the year 8510
Wheeler is gonna shake his mighty head
He'll either say, "I'm pleased where PvP has been"

Or tear it down and start again
    Whoa-oh-oh

    In the year 9595
    I'm kinda wondering
    If Cyrodiil is gonna be alive;
EP has taken everything this old Tamriel can give
And they ain't put back nothing
    Whoa-oh-oh

Now it's been ten thousand years
Care bears have cried a billion tears
    For what they never knew
    Now gated access is through

    But through the eternal night

    So very far away
    Maybe it's only yesterday...

Someone is uninformed. The real truth is people are either sitting in a crowded market area or are in Cyrodiil.

Nope. 1 paying subscriber counts towards the total. The total sub count are the people who pay the bills. Total count of paying customers or the rest is flake talk.

I've seen your responses. You are better than average, but my logic is at its core the real truth. You are dismissed

You do realize that subscribers alone do not determine the playerbase population right? That fact alone flaws your logic. Might want to check your facts before you try to act high and mighty.

Not if they buy it digitally.

I don't think it's going to die on console any time particularly soon, it's just thinning out. ESO has an identity crisis, and not everyone is going to put up with that, thus some players are leaving.

Player population is going to be in a state of flux until ZOS decides between immersive single player and mmorpg. Right now they are burning the candle at both ends. Console suffers more from this because they lack the addons of PC to pull more toward a fully flushed MMO. Anyone wanting a more traditional MMO on console is left out, as telling them "just play PC"', isn't a vaild answer. In the same vain communication methods on console are lacking, so it's hard to find players who are interested in the same content, and this affects both parties adversely.
