I still have mine as well, buried in a closet. The cassette player crapped out years ago, and I doubt that my old program tapes would still work now anyway. I also still have my Commodore 128. I should probably try to ebay them.

GOD I loved that game.. First time I ran into a mind flayer I freaked out!

There was another on Sega back then that was similar to it and that game was amazing near the end it got rough.

Play sports , keep fit , ladies man , modest as hell but I've finally accepted at 32 I am actually a bit of a gamer nerd. It was accelerated from my 28th year onwards when I got heavily into mmos. Don't hide from it , embrace it like I do (in private , among gamer friends but never in public)

I totally agree with the OP. I am 42 and have been playing games since the 70's as well. Back in the early days of PCs and console systems like the Odyssey.

In my experience, I find that I am much more accepting of things like graphics, load time and such. I really do feel it's partly because I grew up playing such things as pong. And remember the excitement when games started having stick figures and basic graphics. Days where I was excited to get my copy of Micro 80 in the mail to see what was new in gaming and sitting there transcribing the code lines from the magazine so I could try them out. Or better yet, taking 30 min to load a game from my audio tape drive only to find out I had it at the wrong volume and the game loaded with error. ;)

To the younger players (if there are still any reading this far into the thread), I believe what the OP is saying is that older players are generally more patient because we've seen not only the progression of game complexity, we've seen our share of bugs and learned to have fun while working around them.

How many us (I count myself among the old guard at 45) growing up hit bugs in every day electronics and just learned to work around them as second nature? My parents complain that in their day things were built to last and they get bothered by glitches in today's electronics, whereas I don't dwell on them, I just work around them to get what I want.

I also have the perspective of writing software starting with the TI-99/4A to today working on the latest operating systems, including a few big production games in between. So I empathize with the game developers.

I've said it before on these forums and I'll say it again: no one wants to fix all the glitches and bugs more than the game developers. They know what's missing and a lot of times know how to fix it, but they have to stick to production schedules where tasks for sprints are planned out ahead of time and sometimes features/fixes have to be punted if they can't be completed in time and safely merged into the source code for the next release cycle.

Everyone has the right to complain when they find a bug, but it's how they complain that I think causes some of us to shake our heads. Find a bug, report a bug, go back in and try to have fun. Throwing a tantrum, threatening to leave, and questioning the talent and abilities of the dev team are just so...juvenile.

    47 here.

The reason I complain is that companies like ZOS create a something really great, and then they go about mucking it up... Probably because people complain, and they don't really understand their customer base.

We didn't expect much from PONG, etc., but when something like EOS with it's complexity is made, and it's potential is nerfed, it's just sad.

    .02 cents in the can.

Indeed. I make the odd complaint about certain skills but to complain about games in general? nope, games are for fun and fun is what I have on games. There shouldn't be ANYTHING stressful about games, now I know that's easy to say because there are a lot of frustrations within games, but you shouldn't focus on all the negatives within those games if you really want to have fun and enjoy yourself.

The answer is simple. We went from playing games that had a bouncing ball that went back and fourth(PONG)to the games of today.
So in till you had to live through all of the games from the 1970s to this day you don't have any reason to complain. So if your around my age and you have been a dedicated gamer for all these years you know exactly what I'm talking about. That's all I have to say.

I see. So, people for whom ESO is one of their first games, they should wait 30 years and then say: "I had to put up with *** games like ESO when I was young. Consider yourself lucky with today's games!" ;)

The first computer "game" I played was on a "KIM-1" https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/KIM-1

There was a "horse racing" game where the top, middle and bottom horizontal LEDs would light up and move, and would move faster with key presses. To play the game you had to enter in the binary code on the keypad to program the computer, which in itself was a challenge for my then 8 year old capabilities. If you wanted to do anything else or turn it off, you would have to enter it again every time you wanted to play. Then you sat with 2 friends, fingers on the little keypad, furiously pressing your key to make your "horse" run faster than the others.

Pong was a graphical miracle compared to that!

But it was still great fun!

My first system was an intelivision and I played the hell out of a game called utopia. It was a precursor to games like populus and then finally sim city. Great old games! You younglings will never get the enjoyment of putting in a NES cartridge and getting nothing but a rainbow of random colors, so you have to take it out and blow on the inside of the cartridge and inside the system then try to reboot it. Wait no I could have lived without that. Lol

Some of my favorite titles for my favorite console, the original NES. I would suggest any of these to the younger generation if you can get past the graphics:

Faxanadu ( my fav NES game)
    Shadowgate
    Dragon warrior
Final fantasy 1 (started it all!)
Duck tales ( don't knock it, amazingly well made)
River city ransom ( fighting game with rpg elements )
    Blaster master

Intellivision was my first console and my favorite games were Astromash, Snafu (closest thing to Tron light cycles at the time), Nightstalker, and Star Strike (Death Star trench scene).

I played the *** out of those games!

I started gaming in '85 just before I turned 5. I remember well because I was playing "Kangaroo".

Fast forward, I agree that there is toooooo much complaining going on. I currently play Final Fantasy XIV, and that game has the biggest community of complainers. I always blame my age, but I'm beginning to find truth in it.

When I play Gears of War, the team I'm on is happy that I got double-digit kills in four games straight. But that 5th game, I got 3 kills and died 10 times, now they want me to leave.

Two (count'em) two K of screaming RAM, a cassette tape deck for programs (if optional 16K RAM pack attached to computer), no power switch (Who needs 'em?), and a black and white TV. Gimme a magazine with some game code in Basic, an hour to fat-finger it in, and my game was on!

If a game isn't quality then people own every right to make a complaint. They paid real money for it and the product's quality should reflect that. Old, young or dead even this concept holds true. The gaming industry has evolved but it's progression is not an excuse for apologetic excusation.

Except that the complaining is more on the lines of getting a headshot in Gears and the character still yells AFTER their head is gone. Stuff like this CAN be ignored, but people bring it up. In other words, the bulk of the community purposely look for little things to complain about.

Look at Halo 5. Supposedly to be a bad a** game, but no split-screen now makes it a bad game... SHEESH!
