I'm 44 years old and I've been playing pc and console games since 1977. I truly believe we are the gamers that rarely complain about any game that is made today. You might ask yourself why?? The answer is simple. We went from playing games that had a bouncing ball that went back and fourth(PONG)to the games of today.
So in till you had to live through all of the games from the 1970s to this day you don't have any reason to complain. So if your around my age and you have been a dedicated gamer for all these years you know exactly what I'm talking about. That's all I have to say.

My brother was 35 when he passed but he was a hardcore gamer. When i was a kid he'd let me play all the old games so i actually understand what you are saying and I'm only 24. No point in complaining about the games. From my view they are meant to be fun. Why play if all you do is complain.6 -

PinoZino✭✭✭✭IMHO, games contained in the Stone Age less bugs and issues. But the times were different.
Games were much easier to develop and programmed by very small teams - sometimes by just 1 developer.
And the pressure for the dev people was less: few competition and so was the involved money.
Many games had no deadline to deliver as well, for sure with the games made by 1, 2 or 3 people at home.
We, the players, we liked almost everything but not all. "E.T. the Extra-Terrestrial" on Atari was puked out by the public.
My first MMO I played was MUD. And I liked it a lot.

A modern game probably has a 500k lines of code, so not surprised bugs are still being removed years after release.4 -

I remember playing Baldur's gate cooperatively over dial up in the 90s. My friends and I couldn't believe we were playing D&D without having to actually gather...RPGs have come a long way since then...
One of my very first games was back in like 1984, and was a text-based strategy game where you flew nuclear bombers over Russia. Defcon may have been the name...and our Texas Instruments computer hooked up to our TV...which still had a dial for the channels. I was 8 years old and learning how to use latitude/longitude to navigate. Most games don't teach you much anymore...
I also payed 'Tunnels of Doom' on that system, which may have well been the first electronic RPG. It took 15 minutes to load off a cassette tape, but it was worth it!4 -

Yup, and the same thing was said about us when we were little too. Each generation looks back on their own generation with rose tinted specs. Just because you imply things were better back yonder doesn't mean the reality reflected that. If you want to delve deeper, it's our generation of kids that you're berating. So what does that say about your (and mine) generation's style of parenting? If every kid wants everything handed to them on a plate, it's because we've brought them up to be like that.
Go back further, my grandparents and others their age used to tell us how great it was - that you could leave your front door unbolted and that everyone helped one another. Go back to the 70's and 80's "you can't do that nowadays". What our grandparents conveniently omit from their fairy tales is fascism was rife in Europe and millions died in 2 needless wars.

My old man is 64, loved rpgs and 10 years ago would've loved mmos . He played every final fantasy up-to and including 12 . Loved the metal gear series too . I'm 32 but I'll be 33 when I go to ultra festival in Miami next year . Am I a man child ? Yes but you like what you like . We were the 1st gaming generation really it's no surprise it's stayed with us. I'm pumped for Tony hawks 5 as I was genuinely godly at the 1st 2 iterations around 15 years ago now . Probably rank rotten now don't think my fingers can be anywhere near as quick these days but still I know I'm gonna love it .at 29 i feel myself to old for games... yet i still play them... there is no cure for this disease.

Artfuldodger✭✭✭played pong then Atari then commodore 64, the games were on a cassette tape that you had to put in a recorder and wait absolutely ages for it to load. Many many years later I find myself waiting ages for this game to load ha ha ha.

Yep, gen X'er here too. You had to go down to the 7/11 or arcade to play good games. Home gaming systems were not as good as games in the arcade. You lined up your quarters to hold the machine. The 7/11 manager would kick us out if we got rowdy so everyone had to be cool if you wanted to play.
I remember fights breaking out in the hood over one kid beating the high score of another kid. Of course this was before crack cocaine, gangs, and kids shooting other kids over street corners mid/late 80's. Chuck Taylors, white T-Shirts, blue jeans, BMX bikes, Saturday Morning Cartoons, and Pacman, *** the late 70's, early 80's were awesome time to be a kid.4 -

Dude the local grocery store had a street fighter arcade machine . Ques went down the street for it , challenger paid winner stayed on . There were many fights started over that between kidsJungleim

Been playing MMO's and MUD's before since around '95.
My first PC gaming experience was Wolfenstein 3D, pirated off of a BBS, of course, but played too many Tandy CoCo games and NES games before that to begin to count.
Still remember being in awe of the kids down the street that could afford a Neo Geo.
I still think the high point of my gaming career was all-weekend Baldur's Gate LAN parties. We'd start around 8PM on Friday night and most of us would be lucky to make it into work on Monday morning. Oh, I have lots of reasons to complain.
Until the AI in crpgs reaches the level of reactiveness that a GM in a pnp game can display I'll complain.
Of course by then we'll all have been overrun by killer cyborgs but at least game AI won't be so weak.

No, I'm old and I complain all the time. However, I will say in modern developers' defense that I'm sick of hearing everyone complaining about how games today release with so many bugs, and how games used to not release with bugs, and how games are overpriced.
First of all, old-school games DID release with bugs. Even the simplest of games back in the day still had bugs that made it into the final product.
Secondly, of course games today have MORE bugs--because they have more of EVERYTHING. It's absolutely absurd to expect a 50 GB game game developed by a team of hundreds (if not thousands) of programmers, designers, etc. released today to have no more bugs than a game that released 30 years ago that was a few KB in size and was developed by one or two programmers.
Considering the INCREDIBLE complexity of today's modern games, I am amazed that even more bugs don't make it in. Back in the day, some early game companies didn't even have Q&A testing. The games were so simple that a whole game could be developed and play-tested by a single person. And even with games that simple, bugs STILL made it in.
Thirdly, games today are NOT overpriced. When I was a kid, an Atari game ran about $30. That's about $80 in 2015 dollars. And that was for a game whose entire development cost was basically just the salary of a single programmer. The fact that you can buy a game today for only $60 that may have cost $200+ million just to develop is an AMAZING value. Even if they try and sell you some horse armor afterwards, you're still getting an INCREDIBLE amount of bang for your buck. So stop yer moanin'!
I love modern games. It's amazing how far we've come in just 30-40 years. My old-school experience just makes me appreciate the new stuff all the more.

When I was playing games as a kid (on the Amigas 500 and Atari 1040 Stfm) I never once paid more than £15 for a game (that's around $20 to you) and £15 was a new release premium price, I still have some of those games with the price sticker still on them, so prices in the UK must have been a heck of a lot less than the US.

✭✭✭I think the main difference is that the Internet allows us to hear the loudest complainers disproportionately. Vocal gaming minorities seem like majorities because they won't shut up.
I don't think most players are complaining about ESO. But a decent percentage of complainers like to take their complaints public and dominate the discourse.
As someone who listened to a lot of sports radio in the 80s, people were pretty good at complaining back then too.1 -

This is my normal night.
1. I log in and go to PvP - I teleport to a keep, once I get there I take a few steps... CRASH
2. I see a resource that is flagged, so I go there and help.. i travel to the resource I see my group.... CRASH
3. I'm in a battle i'm trying to help save a Keep... CRASH
4. I take one of my purple drinks.. yes Purple the ones that cost most.. I head to a fight.... CRASH
I do this several times a night, so yes I have the right to complain.
