... to unlock the tangerine orange and come to find out it doesn't apply to my light armor. :(

The only "orange" that can be applied looks... peach. *barf

Is there a particular reason why some dye colors don't apply to some armors?

    Dye doesn't fit.
    Profanity filter is a crime against the freedom of speech. Also gags.

    Clearly because it would require recoding half the game's systems and would cause 7000 bugs including making DKs able to fly if they attempted it.

    The fear of flying DKs is what really is holding back so many fixes to bugs and exploits.
