Dark Brotherhood - Who is the Night Mother?

DrunkenGryffinInn
So, we know according to one lore legend that the Night Mother was a member of the Morag Tong. She was also rumored to be a member of the Thieves Guild but branched out into assassinations with the Dark Brotherhood.

We also know, again, according to one lore timeline that she was a Dunmer woman who had five children by Sithis and sent all five to him in the void.

Who is she? When does she exist in the timeline?

Well, if she is Dunmer and not Chimer than it is after the Tribunal Comes to power and it could be now during the time of ESOTU.

With the release of the Dark Brotherhood pending perhaps we have already met a certain female Dunmer Morag Tong assassin.

No one knows. And if they do they would never tell. To the brotherhood, information is sacred. .

Well, not exactly. We know that the Dark Brotherhood has been around at least since 2E 358 (that's the earliest known written record of them), and ESO takes place in 2E 582, so the Dark Brotherhood has been around for over 200 years, meaning that the original Night Mother (whoever she may have been) is probably already dead and gone.

Of course, there are a lot of stories about the Night Mother that contradict each other, and I like to think that each of them probably has some element of truth to them. Personally I like to think that there may have been one original Night Mother, but the name was also used as a title, so probably some of the stories about the Night Mother are based on the lives of some other women in the Dark Brotherhood, and were incorporated into the story of the Night Mother both to enhance her legend, and to obfuscate the truth (as an organization of assassins you want to be at least a little mysterious).

Well the night Mother is never really truly dead and gone. Remember she was a talking corpse? She was granted some form of immortality By Sithis but it's unclear why she became a corpse. Maybe it's a slumbering period she has to go through.

True, I probably should have put quotes around the word dead. I could be wrong on this, but I'm pretty sure that her corpse isn't yet being revered by the Dark Brotherhood in this time period though. I think they dug her up and started that later.

I'm pretty sure I just read a copy of The Five Tenets in a bookshelf in the Library of Dusk in Coldharbour, which suggests that ESO is remaining somewhat consistent with what @UrQuan has said above - the Dark Brotherhood has been around a while.
