Anything that causes damage will pull you out of cloak, so if you pick up a DOT effect cloak it'll break straight away - unless you're using the Dark Cloak which cancels out DOTs (equivalent to your level in the skill).

My feeling is that OP talks about the fact that ticks of a poison injection dot you put on another player still take you out of cloak if you cloaked after the attack was shot off (while the dot is still ticking on said opponent).
Used to happen with all dots a nightblade could dispense, imagine that fun...
This could also be tested to see if the bleed from Carve pulls you from cloak. This is one of the original Cloak breaking mechanics that has resurfaced.
